My son was premature and we had therapists teach us massages to do around the mouth so that it "wakes up" the nerves and muscles there and help minimize his feeding issues so he could get off garvage (aka tube in the nose) feeding and eventually leave the NICU. there are different massages for different reasons, but it basically is a way to make the babies brain aware of certain muslces so they start using them.

there are other massages for the back/chest to aid in breathing, limbs to start the baby moving/crawling if they become delayed, reflexology for stimulating things like digestion/pooping, hand massages so they start using fine motor skills early, or in a healthy baby it helps them get ahead.
