im not familiar with his work, but its a lot easier to watch the sorta unfamiliar sorta stuff and appreciate it after you're introduced to the medium as a whole– usually through some of the more westernized works.

Start with Steamboy. It's anti-capitalist/judea.
Then go to Spriggan. It's Holla Forums ancient civilizations.
Then watch Wings of Honneamise. It's the slowest out of the four, but has great themes.

Finish with Akira. It's good, but didn't translate well from the actual source material.

The only thing he really had full control of is 'Netjuu no Susume'.

If you want something slow and gloomy with RWDS memes then Jin-Roh is the ticket.

If cyberpunk is your thing you'll like Ghost in the Shell (first two movies and SAC).

If you want a heart-wrenching period piece then Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal is good.

If you have time to kill and want to watch one of the greatest space operas ever, LOGH is waiting for you.

Comedy is a bit more difficult because cultural idiosyncrasies and references to other media present a natural barrier but I'd feel comfortable recommending Great Teacher Onizuka, Cromartie High School and Daily Lives of High School Boys. Just be aware that Jap comedy is truly its own animal and it's okay if you can't hang with it.

You can find most of these dubbed if you really have to, but the English voice acting is often porn-tier and in many cases the Japanese VAs are outstanding. Oh, and don't stream any of this. Most of these are movies and short series with high production values and deserve to be viewed in HD.

Yeah, Akira is both "good" and important in animu history yet it attracts so much fanboyism that it still manages to end up overrated IMO. If you go in expecting just cool sci-fi action with nice art, instead of the most amazing plot and dialog ever, you'll enjoy it.

The ending is that duty is everything. Family is all. The wolf pack comes first, even over your twisted personal relationships with the enemy that were a lie anyway. The general plot just explores everything from different angles and is a glorious mess of feels which contrasts with the seemingly cold, dispassionate 'duty' that makes up the other part of the film. Also amazing aesthetics and brutal animation, coupled with a masterful usage of sound gives every action segment a tense and unnerving feel.

Just generally an amazing film, and likely one that requires several viewings to fully appreciate.

Good luck. I would suggest 'Essential Kanji' by P. G. O'Neill… the order the Kanji appear in, and the stroke order, are very intuitive. Also, there's no 'gimmicks', so if you're someone who likes a more traditional approach to learning, then that's probably good (although it's not like there isn't info on the origin of the meaning of the characters, which can help you remember better).
Some people do better with all sorts of arcane schemes of Automated Spaced Repetition, etc.
Anki and certain competitors have proved useful to many. Combining methods is not bad, either.
Full disclosure: I have to confess that I'm one of those people who's always "in the process" of learning Japanese.
I'm wary of ONLY using Anki, because I had a friend who did that, and basically, he was able to gun through all the MEANINGS of the ~2000 Jouyou kanji in a few months, but he didn't know the readings, stroke order, grammar, or anything else… and a couple years later, he'd forgotten the vast majority of what he used to 'know', because he hadn't been using it practically or connecting it with anything.
