Anyone have some thoughts on this? It just debuted on Netflix with English dubs and subs, and is pretty high quality for a German production, by that I mean it could easily be a premier tv event anywhere in the world. It is set in Weimar Republic and portrayed as a sort crime drama mystery. I'm about halfway through but so far I'm surprised that the tone doesn't seem to be too celebratory of all the degeneracy of that era. Instead, it all seems to softly imply, "Hey this place really was falling into a dystopia all on its own and the rise of National Socialism was a logical consequence" but I'll have to reserve my judgment until the end to see how it actually treats that subject matter. But at least right at the beginning the show demonstrates the depravity of Weimar, the drugs, the prostitution, the communist riots, and the pornography - a very early sequence is a Vice Squad raid on an (obviously Jewish production) of a pornographic film about Mary being fucked by the Archangel, halting that as well as preventing the production of a film with 4 underage boys in cherub outfits. The directors try to defend themselves by quoting the constitution that "Art is free" - lol that's not art.
Yeah, from that early moment Vice Squad is firmly established as the protagonist, at least in my mind, and the show presents the different characters' plots in a way that doesn't really urge you to pick one character or the other as the hero. But anyone still left with a since of decency should have an easy time determining who is in the wrong here without needing the director to layer on a lot of artificial cinematic flourishes to impress valuations onto viewers.

Didn't get around to watch it yet,but I read all of the books the show is based upon. I'm conflicted about watching it, because I already heard from others, that the producers were dialing the degeneracy aspect up and I didn't want to see the protagonists getting defiled merely for edginess. Also, the show was produced with taxpayer's money in a cooperation with one of our state channels, so I would fairly surprised if it wasn't sledge-hammer style anti-"Nazi" propaganda (especially in the political climate of today) with an overrepresentation of virile blacks.

This kind of show ALWAYS bait-and-switch the audience. Titillation + moralising, with a side order of "degeneracy is a-ok, all the cool kids are fine with it goys". They did it in Sons of Anarchy, Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, etc, etc. Betcha one of the Vice Squad protagonists starts to have 'misgivings' about what he's doing, probably when he falls for some whore-with-a-heart-of-gold soiled dove working in the cabarets. They will *never* intentionally show the Nazis in a sympathetic light.
