I have had luck being self-taught. I wouldn't suggest going to a school, but visiting ateliers if you need to. I suppose it would be the artist equivalent of going to a trade school, but not really. Need to brush up on anatomy? Pay 300usd for a 2 week course on figure studies.

There's also a plethora of books to learn from, most of which are already in public domain and are completely free to view online as .pdfs. You can also buy books, and torrent them if you must. However, if the artist is living I will try and directly support them if I can.

I know people who spent 100k going to art school and their skill level is far, far, below mine. I've seen people online going to the most sought-after art schools in America and they are indistinguishable in skill from a random deviantart user.

The entire Gallery is filled with beautiful works of art, and I've visited multiple times. When I saw this news I was dismayed. I was further dismayed to see that most of the post-its were positive for the removal of the painting. There were some against it, even one by a feminist who was against its removal (for what that's worth). But on the whole, it was bleak.
If there are any other Manchester anons out there, you MUST go and write post-its on there against the removal of the painting. This 'conversation' makes us look like the minority. We must rectify that!

I saw this attitude even during my brief stint in art college 15 years ago. I endured professors too timid to offer even the mildest critique on what was utter shit eve then. I'll never forget an assignment we had in life drawing to do pencil sketches of our own feet. I'd have a hard time even describing the abominations that were hung on the wall the next morning. But more abominable was the lack of critique and correction. Every one was instead a special snowflake. This was life drawing - drawing from real life, nude models, still life, etc. Instead it looked like Picasso 101.
That was the day I realized that I wasn't going to learn anything but color charts and theory and that I'd be paying for it, literally and figuratively, for the rest of my life if I didn't get out then. It was not a cheap school.

You could use clear matte gesso/varnish to recreate the texture and paint strokes.
I'd print a large on a pro 100, seal the finished picture with a matte sealant (like mr.superclear), then if you wanted, paint over it with gesso to recreate the strokes.

POLITICAL GRANDSTANDING IS NOT PERFORMANCE ART!

The removal of JW Waterhouse's "Hylas and the Nymps' by the Manchester Art Gallery in order to start a conversation about the representation of women in Victorian art has instead resulted in near universal condemnation of censorship and political stunts. The painting was removed as a deliberate act of provocation as part of a piece by contemporary artist Sonia Boyce. I have no problem with this per se. The history of art is full of rebellions and provocations: the Impressionist rejection of Academic art, the Dadaist rejection of, well, everything.

The real problem was the justification written by the curator of modern art Clare Gannaway, who made a trite reference to supposed cliches in Victorian art. This simply exposed her ignorance - unforgivable for a curator in a significant gallery like Manchester.

She made three false assumptions:

1. She failed to situate the work alongside other representations of the myth of Hylas.

2. She failed to mention that Hylas is the youthful lover of Heracles and as such signifies homoeroticism and notions of MALE beauty.

3. She fails to mention that in classic mythology the nymphs have a complex meaning that has more to do with an independent (and therefore feminist) understanding of female desire. The classic example of this, and another popular subject, is the tale of Artemis and Actaeon. Artemis, the huntress and goddess of the nymphs, is bathing with her nymphs when she catches the hunter Actaeon spying on her. She turns him into a stag and sets her hounds on him and they rip him to shreds. If this isn't a warning about the 'male gaze' I don't know what is.

Instead Gannaway reduces all of this to a superficial and ignorant complaint about Victorian cliches - whilst herself stereotyping Victorian attitudes that just happen to be far more sophisticated than her own.
