As of Windows 7 NTFS has had some self-defragging capabilities. Filesystem self-defraggmentation is now done at kernel level as of 8.1. Good luck trying to defrag an ext filesystem thats nearly full. All ext does is store data from the center of the disc platter first to decrease seek times and attempt to dampen the performance hit of disc fragmentation. Its not magic
