What went wrong?

What went wrong?

Sega Saturn

Fuck off, the Dreamcast is good.

Sony. Sony ruined everything.

shills from the sony headquater smashed the DC PR.

reputation was too tarnished from the sega saturn and the sega 32X in the west.

I really don't know, i think Sony had such a big success with the Playstation that everyone decided to wait for the PS2 instead, also the fact that the Dreamcast graphics looked nice but the games where mostly as long as complex as psx titles, meanwhile the PS2 got stuff like Grand Turismo, Onimusha and Final Fantasy and other big names.

...

really, it was the PS2. The Dreamcast had pretty good third party support despite how much Sega had fucked up previously. If they hadn't started from such a disadvantage, they might have been able to keep things going.

This, they wasted so much money on it they couldn't save Dreamcast and it sold like hotcakes on release despite Sega's reputation.

saturn had more games and better games. What went wrong was a series of poor market decisions, lack of support for major regions and poor relationships between SoA and SoJ that had the triumphant genesis fall on its face in its last years, the saturn stumbled out of the gates and die in a year in the US as far as its relevancy and popularity, and the dreamcast was built with what little they could put together and ended up having to be canned simply because Sega was in the red for so long. The PS2 sealed the deal but you'd be a fool to think the nearly 10 years of god awful decisions and fuck ups didn't put the dreamcast down.

Either way, Sega consoles are some of the best around, and the dreamcast may have a small library, it's got a number of excellent games.

...

No games. Compare it's 2001 lineup to Sony's and the PS2 blows it out the fucking water.

They just couldn't generate the buzz they wanted and I think at the time the graphical leap didn't look too big compared to what was already out there.

If you really want to pin it on something, it was Sony selling the PS2 with DVD playback. You have to remember at the time that DVD was a fairly new technology and the DVD players themselves were often rather expensive.
Out comes Sony with a game system that is also a DVD player and it is rather cheap for a DVD player at the time.
The kids will be happy because of the games and shit now you, as a parent, now get to enjoy this new movie technology.
Or if you're just a teen/young adult in college or whatever now you have a game system AND a DVD player.

Really, it was all the DVD playback that did it.

ITT underage who were 3 when Dreamcast died regurgitating whatever information they saw on Did you meme gaming

Storytime?

1)Ahead of its time
2)Too good for casual plebs
3)Too smart for Americans
rip DC
I love you

As someone who purchased it in Australia day one - all it hard were arcade ports - which is fine now that the games are cheap/can be pirated - but at the time you were forced to pay full price for a game that was designed to hold your attention for a short amount of time.

Sega was never good.

Society, humanity as a whole, the entirety of the planet.
The console did nothing wrong, it was what a console is supposed to be.

...

Since the PS3/360 gen one only wishes release titles were even remotely as good.

Nothing much to tell user. We were all into messing around with consoles and breaking the copy protection, the web was young, we'd just come out of the BBS era and begin able to burn games was still a mythical thing to normalfags.

Mil-CD was discovered pretty quickly when it was noticed that karaoke CDs were running in a separate software mode. GD-ROM became broken wide open over night and a boot disk for normalfags followed shortly afterwards. Our main problem in the early days was having to dump games over the modem but methods were figured out that used the broadband adapter and later custom firmware on DVD-ROMs so it became a non-issue.

A month or so after the boot disc was released normalfags started flooding in to download the goodies. I still have an issue of Gamepro magazine laying around where someone wrote in to ask about all the backups begin sold on ebay/lycos and the author recommended that honest gamers should treat the boot disc like "lime flavored goo" and avoid it at all costs. Sega responded and blamed us for their failures then closed up the console division a year later.

Most of us were hardcore Sega fans back then that had been burned on the Saturn, 32X, and SegaCD. By that point we figured they owed us some free games so no one really cared if it was hurting sales. It wasn't really hurting sales anyway the Dreamcast was flying off the shelves and so was the software. The only thing Sega can blame their failure on is themselves, the PS2 wasn't really that amazing when it came out and it was over priced. Sega should have won that war easily but they showed once again that they were unable to properly manage SoA and instead of admitting it they did what they always do: Blame SoA for the problems SoJ caused.

Not enough porn games.

PS2 marked a turning point in the games business. The only entity to successfully "break in" since Sony has been Microsoft, and both have seen periods of insane losses and incompetent decisions without the same kind of consequences that would affect an incompetent idea from Sega or Nintendo like 32X or Virtual Boy.

PS2 was also a wild success despite pretty clearly being an inferior product to its competition. Although it's arguable whether or not this happened to the original PlayStation, PS2 was the one of the first products that would've fallen apart if not for a massive fanboyism-propelled hype train for the time.

It was just ahead of its time. If it had come out like four years later, it would have been fine.

SEGA
Sega of America: Hey we're going to pack Sonic in with the Genesis, because fuck having 8% of the US video game market.
Sega of Japan: YOU'RE FUCKING CRAZY!
Boss Nippa of SoJ: SHUT UP. SoA, do whatever.

Sega of America FUCKS Nintendo six ways from Sunday in the US. SoJ is a salt mine now, and works tirelessly to fuck SoA wherever and whenever possible. See 32X fuckup, US Saturn launch, marketing, and dev kit retardation. Nobody trusted Sega in the US anymore, except for people who weren't ass broke,

SONY
It renders Toy Story in real time! Also it plays DVDs.
Also we possibly funded Chinese pirate factories to shit out bootleg Dreamcast games.

I think PSX falls into that catagory too, since the edge it seemed to have was the entire casual gamer audience due to sports games and PR.
Not that hardcore gamers didn't have a PSX too, but it was the main console to dominate the casual market in that era, and those casuals I knew who bought it bought it because of PR and sports games.

Sega

What did he mean by this?

cucked by the PS2.

go back to reddit.

My biggest issue with the switch is there is not enough pron

The cord came out the wrong end of the controller.

1) They made all that shitty gimmick addons for genesis (32x, Sega CD, etc) instead of focusing on Saturn and releasing it before PSX.

2) They didn't focus Saturn on 3D games, although it could pull better 2D graphics than psx, 3D was the market back then. And also they didn't promote it enough. It was a good console but it didn't have that many games.
3)They made dreamcast work with fucking CDs (GDs were glorified CDs) so everyone with a CD burner could pirate their games.

That and Sony having so much success with PSX that everyone was waiting for PS2 and didn't give a shit about SEGA, a shame because dreamcast had so many great games in such a short lifespan.

No MegaTen games.
Well, no real ones, anyway.

Sega fucked themselves over with all those fucking Genesis add ons. People didn't buy a saturn because they were expecting a billion add ons again and Sega thought it was a good idea to reveal and launch it on the same day instead of building hype. Also all of sega of america's "no 2D games" policy added to the shit heap of poor decisions.

Then EA cucked all the sport games from the dreamcast and the PS2 could play DVDs, so normalfags ditched sega for the PS2. Then Shenmue's massive budget that would force every dreamcast owner to buy two copies in order to break even and the piracy were the final nails in the coffin.
