The problem is they only considered top level play when designing the multiplayer. Anyone who wasn't gook clicking gave up and went to MOBA's.

But the writer for all this shit was Metzen, who has been writing since WC2 and Diablo. They didn't hire new shitty writers, their main writer just became a miserable old man and lost his ability to write anything interesting.

Diablo 1&2 and Starcraft - Brood War had a great minimal story that was helped with its atmosphere by Blizzard North(RIP) because Blizzard earned widespread acclaim and fucking mainstream popularity, they did what all companies that go mainstream do, make their shit as mainstream as ever, look at PG13 Diablo 3 and weep.

They not only considered only top level plays, they also failed at doing it properly. It was far too often based on small mistakes or randomly being decided on two army blobs a moving into each other.
It made mistakes and weakened itself with a switch from BW to SC2. It pretty much did exactly what you shouldn't do when MOBAs started competing very strongly against it.
