I played all of them very recently. It plays a bit like a Metroidvania in that you get powers to advance to other areas but the combat is also similar to Monster World, especially 4, with the magic system and weapon upgrades.

Where do I start?

Pirate's curse is the peak of the serie. Risky's Revenge is shitty compared to the other 2. Shantae 1 is a really damn good game for a GBC game, but a GBC game nonetheless.
There's no real starting point, since the story is pretty easy to get, I'd say you can either start with Pirate's curse, then GBC and then Risky's Revenge or the contrary. You can, however, just play Pirate's Curse.

May as well play them in release order. The first is on GBC, and is a little clunky, but still decent. I disagree with the other guy, I think each game in the series is better than the previous.

Nah, Shantae for the GBC is pretty damn good considering all the limitations on the console, both in length and content. Risky's revenge falls short on that, although it improves a lot of things, is painfully obvious how bad it is after playing Pirate's Curse. Don't misunderstand me, I think it's good, just not as good.

My main problems with the GBC game were the controls and the way enemy health doubles at night, and RR fixed both of those which is why I liked it better. Admittedly I've only played them once each so I might have a different opinion if I went back to them.
The original game is definitely impressive for a GBC game. It looks and sounds great, and I really loved the dungeons. It was just that travelling between the dungeons could be a bit of a chore.

If you play them in order, you'll notice the core combat/exploration is better with every release, but content wise, 1 is more full than Risky's Revenge, even if it's more full of large maps with useless enemies. However, the GBC screen size and bottomless pits + life system of 1 definitely shows how much better RR is from a design perspective.

Weird thing is last I checked Korea is still a mega shitty place for non rich women and everyone young wants to gtfo of the country. Feminist endgame, in other words; it's a rich woman's world, and no one else's.
