Good voice actors wouldn't need to get into a union in the first place. Voice actors have to do a lot of work to make a lot of money, but this has been changing thanks to unions and celebrity marketing allowing them to work more on being Jewish than having decent acting skills or range. The idea that video games are inherently better without voice acting or that voice acting itself harms games is an idea made in reaction, but overall it's stupid that there's a lot of cases where this is becoming a plausible opinion to have. The only remotely justifiable case I can see people forming a union without being cunts about it is if they work in trades or engineering, or anything that involves a greater frequency of workplace accidents and the necessity of safety.

Demonizing voice acting by treating it and dialogue as a zero sum game doesn't make any sense because there's no rule within society or any game engine that requires video games to have every single line of dialogue be voiced. You can always have games where voice lines are relegated to specific scenes and events, such as having voices in fighting game matches, but having their story modes be unvoiced. You can even have unvoiced dialogue during gameplay, since you can always put text onscreen at any time. I get the impression that a good chunk of this or the more extreme opinions about voice acting are a warped version of hating voice actors for not being Japanese people nor Japanese speakers. Regardless, the only good thing that can happen for us in relation to these VAs going on strike is to see them get shitcanned for going on strike as companies just hire smaller name actors from a potentially better talent pool who aren't in unions, don't act like leftist kikes, and don't act like SJWs.

I don't share the sentiment that games should be rid of voice acting, but I don't put it on a pedestal. RPGs would benefit greatly from less or even no voice acting, simply for the sheer volume of extra dialogue and choice you could introduce.

The real issue is too much of a move into the cinematic realm, taking the medium from being about fun gameplay with a story justification for said gameplay, to homogenized and dull gameplay with story being the focus and selling point. Cutscenes and VA work has a place in video games, but not when the game suffers as a result.

What you call a "developer cooperative" is simply a small dev team in layman, not-pinko terms. A dev team small enough where each individual has a considerable say on the development of the game. However in the end it is impossible for any video game to truly be the brainchild of more than one person, considering what defines the video game is the person who creates the game's mechanics and features through programming in the first place. Even a two-man dev team is truly nothing but a one-man dev with a second guy who although contributes work, is simply warping the first man's vision and work since the two do not think and work exactly alike. Stop thinking like a socialist, if you want a voice actor to matter in game development, the voice actor should carry more weight than voice acting alone.

Agreed, voice acting used in a way that doesn't limit the scope of the game can work really well. I know it's hardly a video game but Danganronpa is a great example of this (and many other VNs too).

For the most part, each line of dialogue is not voiced but it is accompanied by a short quip that finishes playing at about the time it takes for you to finish reading it. A sentence-long apology from a character is accompanied by a quick "Sorry!" or sometimes just short grunts or miniature lines are used. What this does is convey the tone of the character speaking as well as their voice in a way that lets you take it at your own pace and allows the developers to only record ~100 lines at most for every type of sentence then repeat them a bunch. They also match the sprites of the characters to additionally help convey what they're saying in a way that can be reused as much as necessary.

Also you don't even need good voice actors for this if you don't intend to do any full lines. Danganronpa hires relatively fancy Japanese actors since the class trials are fully voiced (otherwise it'd be pretty hard to see what everyone's saying since lines fly across the screen or go upside down). You could just grab someone off the street (or the dev team) to grunt into the microphone a bunch of times and get everything you need.

I'd absolutely love to see a big RPG take this approach to dialogue since it's a very nice middle ground between something like Morrowind and "muh cinematic full voice acting"
