Sorry for rambling, but this is exactly the biggest trap for a channer to fall into. I was in a "bright and gifted" school throughout life, and a lot of my former friends have fallen into issues because of this school of thought. Most "smart" people who don't run a business are absolutely incompetent boobs, and they often face terrible fates due to their autism and unearned superiority. Thus, it's really concerning to me that this could be considered good, especially to good Holla Forumsacks that I'd hope are successful and happy.

An interesting point they do not seem to grasp themselves is that relative differences between IQs in people do not correlate between children and adults. It's piss-easy to see the difference in intelligence between children of the same age by using the segregated educational system. For example, a child who is obviously several "grade levels" above his peers. But this breaks down in adulthood because there is no longer a rational and graduated system by which to measure someone's "progress". After graduation, any two 25-year-olds are completely indistinguishable from each other in terms of intelligence, with any sort of objective measure. I feel as if the Hollywood stereotype of a genius does the worst possible damage to people who are actually very intelligent. I feel like revisiting this, with respect to that "problem solving", and the fact that there just are no problems to be solved. The idea then becomes that the intelligent person must invent his own problems to solve. I long ago set a rule for myself that nothing that a computer can do is worth my doing, and by natural extension any human doing. All they are doing here is using a language that is already invented, created by others of only marginally higher intelligence.

So, to start with, one must invent problems in their own "language", and inside it a problem that only they can solve. A smart (business)man finds an problem that people have and solves it (with a product), while a genius finds a problem that people didn't even know they had and solves it; the smart man builds a better mousetrap, while the genius starts Industrialization. I found a better way by simply compartmentalizing portions of my own brain and giving them agency. To be fair, there are different forms of intelligence. You get to see that a lot at university - particularly in relation to students in STEM majors. You can have someone with the level of brilliance required to fully grasp higher-level mathematics, but completely incapable of wrapping their minds around how absolutely pointless and ambition-free their career plans are. IQ is certainly a prerequisite to engaging in higher level activities but it does not guarantee a person anything. If the average person woke up tomorrow and found themselves to be 7' tall, that doesn't mean they would be a great basketball player unless they put in the effort to develop the necessary skill set. Talent and intelligence needs to be refined over time by instructors who know how to mold talent.

I would argue that multivariable calculus doesn't require much higher than an average IQ. There are less than 10 or so techniques that you need to learn in order to solve all but the hardest equations. The fact that this guy was making excuses for why he failed out of *single* variable calculus exposes him big time.

That said, we lack great instruction in the western world and I imagine much of our best talent is wasted by public schools and low level teachers. When you look at the top minds of the past (Newton, Aristotle, Da Vinci, Mozart, Thomas Jefferson, etc) they were taught via 1v1 instruction with a lot of practice. The best prep schools still use small class sizes with significant levels of individual instruction.
