Here's the thing. When a voice actor performs, all that matters out of them is getting a good vocal performance. That isn't to say getting that isn't easy; it does take practice, effort, and control to get it just right, kind of like singing. However, with acting on a stage or in front of a camera, you don't only have to worry about voice, but also your entire body. There are a lot more factors to account for when your body is part of the performance, and not just your voice. What you're looking at, where you're standing, what you're doing with your arms, how to move your arms at this point, what posture to have, what to do with your face, etc etc etc. All of these factors combined and to be executed at the right times makes acting for films/stage much harder than just acting for voice. I'm not defending hollywood actors being millionaires or that the film business is an honest business, but saying a voice actor should be paid as much as film actors is like saying the waiter should be paid as much as the chef.

I do really want these unions to happen and enforce themselves, just so ANYTHING fucking happens, either for better or worse, the "video game industry" ,as I perceive this vague term, is complete shit currently, and voice actors getting replaced or publishers adjusting their jewry to accomodate for these special snowflakes (even if it means exploiting devs further) will be interesting to witness

The crux of their argument and the reason they're striking is largely centered around wanting royalties. In other words, if one of them provides a voice in a new Call of Duty or Halo or whatever and the game does huge business, they want a cut of that pie beyond their initial fee.

For those of us in the industry, we pissed ourselves laughing when we heard about this around two years ago when SAG/AFTRA started hinting that they wanted royalties.

A friend of mine was working with VO stuff at Warner Brothers and you know what he told me?

"Let them bitch. The moment they refuse to work, we'll get someone non-union."

And you know what? That's exactly what they fucking did. Heard similar things from people I know at Ubi, Activision, and other, mid-range studios/pubs.

Gamedev pays an average (or below average, depending on where you are) salary for long hours and hard work and not even people on the fucking dev team get royalties (or anything approaching royalties), but these cunts who work two to three weeks a year at most on our games want them? Get fucked. Full stop, no further discussion.

And that's why the publishers and the big devs will laugh and go right to non-union talent.
