Ok so I did some research.
First of all Dan Johnson was just elected to his position this year (2017). He barely beat Democrat Linda Belcher by 1 percentage point or about 150 votes. In Kentucky vacancies are filled via special election so I am assuming Ms. Belcher will be running again and may just well win this time around.
According to his bio on Kentucky's government website he was a first responder on 9/11. He was involved with 2 Million Bikers to D.C. event which memorializes 9/11 every year. And he was also involved with the Donald Trump campaign.
It seems to me this was most likely to do with 9/11.
It could have to do with someone/Dems just wanting his position to go to a Dem but in reality this is a state position and a fairly minor one at that so that option doesn't seem as likely to me.

"Especially yourself" is the interesting part, because normally one might be tempted to call this pride or egotism and condemn it.
