I tried Lightning Returns the other day thinking it was something it wasn't. It was like they managed to smash together the worst parts of FFXIII with the worst parts of an action RPG. I could've even tolerated the sloppy seconds thirds of the story if the gameplay wasn't abysmal. If you're not going to give me a Dragon Quest clone, at least have the audacity to do something wildly and drastically different, like with XII or with X-2. The XIII series is just inexplicably awful.

FFXIII did a lot of things right. Snow, Sazh and the lesbians were decent characters, the music was actually really good and the visuals, from the enemies to the areas, were fantastic. The battle system was easily the worst, though. You pressed a button maybe once every six or seven seconds, and it was usually the same button each time. The character progression was the sphere grid again, except it's just a line this time and your off classes were just long, long chains of small stat ups.

It's an action RPG, except the battle arena and the overworld are separate from one another, like in a turn-based RPG, but with action combat, and doing any action is reliant on having enough meme points. Not having enough meme points means having to switch forms, because the meme point pools for different forms are unique, except all forms just have the same do--until-points-expended mechanic that makes them feel superficial enough to feel exactly the same. It's like they wanted to go for an Action RPG, but wanted continuity with the previous XIII games (or, at least the first one's), so they smashed together a kinda action RPG with XIII's shitty combat and called it a day.
I'd rather choke on the gallons of diarrhea that is the classic ATB system than touch that fucking game again. Playing a shitfest like VII would be a mercy by comparison.

FFX was an awesome game married to such a horrendous story that I couldn't stomach it. I'd rather hazard Xenosaga or something, even though everyone says they're flawed, just because X's story was such a clusterfuck.
