There is no reason the guy ever needed to leave the position he was in at the start of the video (laying on the ground with hands on his head). The cop could have easily just advanced and searched/cuffed him instead of giving him a bunch of contradictory orders, he had three other cops covering him, there was only ever a single suspect reported, and he's in a hotel hallway where there's no place any unknown suspect could be hiding.

You need to rewatch the video. They let him get away with the reach-back you're talking about. He continues to crawl and then he reaches back again, a THIRD FUCKING TIME. I read some of the initial posts in the thread before opening the video. Based on those I expected to see rambo cops gunning someone down in a home invasion. But they told the guy NOT to put his hands behind his back under any circumstances. And as for the alcohol excuse, his speech isn't even slurred. He's not nearly drunk enough to misunderstand anything they said. He followed all of their commands, except he seemed hellbent on reaching behind his back for something AT LEAST THREE TIMES.

I believe the reason this happened was because the guy felt a sense of urgency. A better cop could have picked up on this (for instance when he sloppily dropped his arms to the ground to begin crawling) and told the guy to take it slow. I just tried this crawling with legs crossed thing and it's easily doable, you're just very slow. Being in a panic the guy may have felt like he had to comply FAST (for the record: the cops did NOT urge him to do anything fast and there was no conflicting information as some posters claimed in the thread) so he crawled in a weird, hectic way, causing his pants to sag from friction. Then his mind must have been clouded enough to habitually reach for his pants when he had been instructed over and over, very clearly, not to do this under any circumstance. This extremely unusual behaviour is what ultimately cost him his life. You can blame the protocol the officers were following (which I assume they were following correctly), you can blame them for lacking empathy and guiding the arrestee in a suboptimal way. Yes, they should have emphasized that he needs to move slowly as early as possible. But then again their job was to investigate the situation in the hotel room and they had yet to reach the hotel room. There was urgency on their part. Taking all factors into account you can't blame these individual cops for the death of this man as much as I'd like to. The circumstances of his death are highly unusual and not something the cops could have expected. I had a lot of time to think about his actions and I'm still not sure I'm interpreting them correctly. So put yourself in the shoes of a cop who has the following things on his mind:

The biggest problem here is that the cop had an AR-15, but no body armor. The cop was afraid for his life. In that situation, he could only choose between being potentially shot or killing this guy. No way for him to know there was no gun because he didn't search him.

If the cop had had full swat armor, maybe we would have felt secure enough to rush the suspect instead of making him crawl around like an idiot.

The guy got told repeatedly and clearly. It was his fault. It was a dumb move to reach for what could have been a gun.

But the police should have had a better method of arresting him than giving him complex instructions. Most people aren't used to playing Simon Says with a gun to their head.
