Those kinds of traps only started happening when that other dude was making them. The kramer jigsaw traps always had a way out, even the group one (i think that was 4)

At the end they show how each of the traps could have been survived by everyone if they just worked together. The other dude was making traps specifically to kill people rather than give them a chance to escape, which was a plot point in the later movies.
