LotR can always be compared to the original movies anyway and I would expect the devil in the details instead of any actual character replacement. Even if they inject new things they will "somehow" automatically be missing from the first movies and cause confusion for the new narrative. The First Age in general would be cool. You could begin with the awakening of the Elves and follow their history, showing the Valar fighting and chaining Morgoth and the great migration west. The early creation of Arda could be shown in flashbacks.

Fellowship is probably the best of the three movies. As a teen I thought it was the worst of the three (still loved it) and that The Two Towers was the best, but now it goes: Fellowship > Two Towers >>>>> Return of The King. All three are wonderful.

On my bookshelf are the first print editions of the Lord of The Rings. They were my great grandfathers, who loved fantasy. He gave them to my grandfather, who in turn gave them to my father. They are old and worn, having been passed down and read many times. They have been through house fires and floods. I think its funny everyone is ragging on you for asking this. I didnt think they were amazing. I think how it ended was very lazy. But rarely have I been satisfied with a book series ending. I disliked where dune went, how lotr wrapped up and how dark tower ended. Maybe I'm just picky or maybe its difficult to end something that big in a satisfying way. If youre not really a fiction fan you can skip it. Reading lotr isn't gonna be a life changing experience for you unless you're just one of those people. The ones here insulting you for not reading it are the people who name their kids from the book. If you don't worship their favourite book they take it personally.

It's from when Merry and Pippin are captured. A close reading of the books reveals all kinds of interesting details about the orc culture that are completely absent in the movies. Tolkien didn't do direct cultural clones like lesser authors.

Well, there are caveats to that. It also says without a Dark Lord like Sauron the Orcs were a whole lot less effective, that Melkor or Sauron gave them will and resolve and when those guys were gone Orcs kind of went to pieces and weren’t much of a threat at all.

All I could feel was disgust and I was feeling unwilling to do anything - tried doing a few things that normally make me feel better; lifting, listened to some music, even played a video game (degenerate, I know). I felt numbed to it all, there was nothing to be gained from it, it became ash upon my tongue.

Just reading this completely changed my outlook. I smiled and went and did some basic productive stuff - prepared some food for later and washed all the dishes and cutlery. Another interesting lesson in kikery from LoTR is what Saruman did to the Shire after he was expelled from Isengard. They decided to let him go because his only power was the ability to manipulate people with his voice. So they went their separate ways and long story short - Saruman hired bandits to extort goods and enslave the hobbits. Saruman also had the sacred party tree cut down (like Irminsul) and many old beautiful buildings were destroyed.

The Tolkien Estate has had no say in the matter of motion picture adaptations since 1969.

The movies have been as they were because the studios sought the estate's blessing and participation, and because to incur its wrath would harm the franchise's marketability and reputation among its most devoted fans. Christopher Tolkien's departure isn't going to change any of this, at least not necessarily for the worse.

What it might do is cause the estate to participate more closely in projects based on Tolkien's work, and MAYBE protect it from the tide of social justice fads sweeping mass media. This depends entirely on how pozzed Christopher Tolkien's children are, versus how eager they are to protect the family legacy. I suspect the fact that Christopher resigned without any apparent ugliness while his wife still holds power in the estate, and the fact that he has reconciled with the son who urged closer participation with the Peter Jackson films, may mean that this family leans more toward protecting the family name than toward making fantasy fiction safe for gay trans people of color and their polyamorous triads.

And by suspect I mean hope - but not with a whole lot of confidence.
