3DS XL pixel density

so i want to get a 3ds for pirating games, and there's a 3dsxl in perfect condition at a nearby pawn shop for $75

my other options are a new 2DS for only $80

or a used standard 3DS for $90-$100 (from local classified ads)

so my question is, do the larger xl screens look shitty enough in reality that i should spend the extra money and get a standard 3ds or 2ds instead? is the xl portion of pic related an accurate representation? because it makes me want to puke just looking at it.

shit, wrong image. i meant to post this instead

Part of it that's important to say is that it'll always look better in person then looking at it from a screen.

Also the 3D does help. It has a bit of an anti aliasing effect. A bit.

So it does, I thought maybe I've been crazy for playing it with the 3ds slider turned on set to the lowest position.

Might as well save the money and get the XL. The worse pixel density is noticeable, but the resolution overall is so shit that I wouldn't tell you to spend more over it.
Fuck you, Nintendo

But you should consider if you want to get a 3DS grip to make holding it more comfortable. I'm not sure if they make any good ones in the XL size, and it might be too big anyway.

I never understood how pixel density work. Can anyone explain it in tard terms?

Technically, the 3D deactivates the anti aliasing, but the effect itself works as a natural anti aliasing. It's like how CRT TVs smooths the pixels, here the blurriness necessary for you to see the 3D effect smooths the edges.

The higher the slider is, the better it looks. I like the "Pop out" effect rather that the "pop in".

How many pixels occupy a space. For example, a 20 inch TV that's 480 will have a lower pixel density then a TV the same size that's 1080

They both have the same resolution but the XL's screen is physically larger.
The upshot is that pixels are more bigger on the XL.

It's really not that big of a deal as long as the frame rate is alright. I don't know about anyone else but I have really low expectations of handheld visuals so the heavy aliasing and low quality textures don't bother me that much.

Unless you have sausage hands, original size is always better, both in screen resolution for the native resolution on games and because the screen doesn't fucking stretch that resolution.

I see. But bigger pixels aren't bad? I mean, in an far away screen like the TV screen or Monitor is understandable, but you literally have your 3DS in front of your eyes. I used both regular and CL, and by personal taste and no understanding of pixel density, regular looks way better. As I said to the other user, I think the bigger screen makes thing look uglier than it should.
I thought I understood resolution, but it looks like I don't

But I don't like the XL. I'm only saying that he might as well save the extra 25 bucks, unless it won't be comfortable enough for him to hold for long.

Like you said, on a TV or even a monitor it doesn't matter that much, but the problem is much more apparent on a small, closely-held screen like the 3DS. Things look jaggy.

well i have big hands and the ds lite always gave me carpal tunnel, so i think the size would be more comfortable

There's always a goldilocks zone. If you stretch a Gameboy Screen too big, it'll look terrible because the pixels are noticeable. If it's too small, you can't make out shit.

This pretty much, on TVs it's not much of an issue.

Alot of the time when I turn on 3d it seems fucked up, only rarely does it look normal. It's like I'm crossing my eyes, and adjusting anything doesn't help. Am I just retarded or is my 3ds broken?

I emulated Aria of Sorrow in a really small screen, and then on a bigger one. It was perfectly ok in the smaller screen while it looked terrible on the bigger screen. Consider that the smaller screen was a really small phone LG Optimus 2, I think, and holding it closer to my eyes I could make everything out of it.

That's more or less what the 3D effect do. That's why you feel weird the first couple of times you use it, but you get used to it. If you mean fucked up as in everything doesn't look like it is supposed, then your 3D is broken. If it's fucked up as seeing double that's normal at first.

You might not be used to it yet. It bugged the hell out of me when I first used it.
It could also be an issue with the head tracking misaligning the image. It'll do that sometimes and because it's adjusting the image to try and compensate for your movement you can't just move your head to get the right angle.

It worked perfectly after I got used to it, then suddenly it's not the same and it looks like I'm crossing my eyes, where theres 2 things displayed at once.

I just don't like the 3ds effect very much, but for some reason when the 3d is turned off completely it just looks like garbage, as if the resolution was cut in half or something. Also seems to be not as bright.

Try getting into it with the 3D slider lowered.

I want to explain to you how it works, but I'm sleepy. In short, you have to pics merged in one in your eyes/brain using lighting, hence why it looks both brighter and smoother.

its weird you say that because the horizontal resolution is actually cut in half when the 3d is turned ON, since every other row of pixels is being seen by either the right or left eye. the total resolution is 800x240, so with 3d on, each eye individually only sees a 400x240 image. maybe you're talking about that anti-aliasing effect mentioned earlier

In practice it doesn't make that much difference. You'll tend to hold a larger screen further away from your face, lengthening the viewing distance and reducing the effect of the wider pixel density. It shows up very clearly and looks bad in comparisons like but in my experience with both models it really isn't that obvious unless you're explicitly looking for it. As for which to buy, I'd go for the new 2DS for one reason. It's guaranteed to have exploitable firmware out of the box, where any secondhand unit will be a gamble in that regard.

the xl at the pawn shop has 6.2.0-12u on it

also this leads me to ask what i feel is too inept to deserve its own thread. can i install CFW on a 3ds with this firmware using nothing but an SD card? i don't want to have to buy any physical games or flashcarts, basically the only thing i want to have to purchase is the 3ds. i already have a 32 gig micro sd card i'm planning on using.
if anyone has any links or advice, i'd like to do plenty of research before i can get started.

Nigger, just go to the 3DS piracy thread, but answering your questions, yes, just follow the damn guide and you should be set to CFW. You really don't need "plenty" of research, following the guide is ok, even a tard can do it, and if you have any doubts, go to the thread, whenever someone makes a new one, here's the recent one

see i knew i would look like an idiot. thanks anyway

i usually avoid reading guides like this ahead of time, because i have no idea what i'm reading unless i actually have the device in front of me and i can do this shit in real time

Looks like you'd need a DS flashcart for MSET decrypt9. Pray that your 3DS ver have browser, if not you can update to a more recent version with a borrowed cartridge that includes any other recent version.

The guide is pretty complete, although it isn't explained at all, is made so you just follow and complete. I had the same problem you do, I just jumped right to it and did it. If you're extra autist you can read the whole guide before doing it.

Whether they look shittier or not, they're more comfortable to hold for an extended duration. I think they look fine though.

the problem i have with stuff like this is that i have the information without the context of how i'm supposed to apply it.

imagine if you've never seen or used a knife before, and you don't have any concept of what a blade is or how to use one. and then you open a cooking book and it tells you to "julienne" an onion with a "santoku". you would have no clue what the fuck they're talking about. that's what its like.

I think he can just copy the 9.2 update file to the SD card and update through system settings as long as it's not online. Following the guide would be trivial then. Haven't dealt with one on 6.x firmware though, so take that with a grain of salt.

I highly doubt that, but then again, he can just ask on the 3DS theme since there is people that know a lot more than I do, specially from the new process.

I get it, since, as I said, I had that problem. Terms like emuNAND, sysNAND and all that shit is hard to grasp, but the guide is pretty complete and straightforward, it doesn't use those terms and when it do it explains them. As everyone says, just follow the guide.

If you keep the same resolution but increase the screen size the pixels per inch will go down.

That being said, OP I have had all major models of the 3DS in my hands. I always thought the XL models stretched out things too much, not to mention they're huge, heavy, and the New 3DS XL lacks face plates. I have the New 3DS now and it's absolutely perfect. Screens are nice to look at and the size is not too big, not too small. Now if you're considering the 2DS remember it lacks 3D and isn't as portable. I've never held one but it seems like it'd have the same screen size as the regular 3DS.

I prefer the XL over the original, the bigger image is much nicer when playing games.

The 3d slider isn't "more 3d or less 3d", really (although obviously with it low there's very little effect.
It's more "adjust the slider until your eyes are comfortable." different people are going to find different levels of 'max' 3d comfortable. i simply can't use the thing on max slider at all, so i leave it at half or below.

simple you big hands xl small hands small one

Don't kid yourself into thinking the 3DS will ever look "good". The resolution is pure dogshit through and through. Might as well get the big one that you don't have to squint to see the shitty ass graphics.

I'm pretty casual and can barely get an emulator working, however, anyone care to fill me in?

I bet you're one of those that posts game screenshots knowing full well the raw output given to game-journalism websites or output by NTR looks like hot ass and says all 3DS games look like that when anybody who's actually held one knows it looks way different in front of your face.

3DS is piracy-capable and has been for years, all but the two most recent firmware revisions are downgrade-capable and 9.2 is CFW-capable. It's actually in an odd spot where there's not much interest in Citra or any other emulator because it's easier to get a real system rolling.

>I'm pretty casual and can barely get an emulator working, however, anyone care to fill me in?

It takes ten hours.

Before focusing on that, you should focus on where you can reliably get a ver 10 or lower 3ds.

I'm on the fence on getting a 2ds because it's dirt cheap and i can get one with the right firmware.
My question, to people who've used both a 3ds and a 3dsxl, is does the xl look better than the 3ds?
Like, if you use an xl regularly and play on a regular 3ds, would it feel like a downgrade? Or is it a small enough of an improvement that I can not worry about it?

XL's an upgrade to normal 3DS, the stretched screen doesn't make any real noticeable difference unless you're too autistic to even speak.

2DS is pretty comfy and has L/R buttons that won't shit out on you though unless you just typoed 3DS there

Not a typo, i do plan on getting a 2ds because regular ds/3ds cramps my hands like nothing else.
I do mean only the visual difference, you're saying the visual improvement is negligible?

Visual difference between 3DS and 3DSXL is pretty negligible, yeah.

Good choice on 2DS if you want a cheap baseline 3DS, good deal cheaper just for the removal of 3D effect. Shame there isn't a New 2DS anywhere.

Have you ever held both of them?

I think you should stop being poor.

Agree on the new 2ds, i'm sure as soon as i got a 2ds a new 2ds will come out.

Have you? Is the difference big?
Is it one of those subjective things?

Fuck, and I don't have the op.
I was just going to ask if there's anywhere I can get lewd themes from, since 3dsthemes admin is a shitty kid
On the topic, I was facing the op's question when buying about 2 months ago and opted for the XL model because it felt more comfortable for me to hold, despite the pixel density. It may or may not have a somewhat longer battery life too

Bumping the thread, i'd love to buy a 2ds as soon as today, so i'd like to scrap as many opinions as possible.

...

If portability isn't a concern, go for it. The 2DS is supposedly built like a tank, and super comfy by comparison. The standard 3DS and even the XL makes my hand cramp. The visual differences are negligible, I've used both models extensively, though not the 2DS.

You're thinking of getting a new3DS right? I spent year on my original that I wore it down to nubs and when I finally upgraded it felt so much fucking better.

aaaalright user, i'll take your word for it and buy it.
Thank you for your time, everyone!

get the 3dsxl user

I have, yeah. 3DS output is already pretty low-res so it really looks about like the same image stretched a bit for the new screen dimensions.

Probably the NTR or other screenshot output for 3DSXL looks even more horrible than the raw output for a stock 3DS or 2DS, but screenshots on the system always look terrible anyways since there's no anti-aliasing of any kind in effect.

Here's your (1)
Also lewd does not equal porn you inbred mongoloid.

OP here, with an update for anyone that wanted one

I got the XL and the screen looks better than i thought it would. It's pink (don't care), and I'm 99% sure it has an IPS top screen

wrong

I have small hands and even the XL is slightly too small for me.
Keep in mind the 3DS is primarily made 4 kidz so even the "large" one isn't that large.

some games do have AA but it's hardly used since the 3DS is already lacking in power as it is

only the most graphically simple games can affort to use AA

There's something in effect since the image you see on-screen is considerably less ugly than the actual raw output.

If you're gonna buy a 3DS then buy the new one with better hardware and certainly not the 2DS.

Where'd you get the raw output from?

NTR can take in-game screenshots. CFW's pretty nice.
