What is it about Aurum Vale that turns all tanks into drooling idiots? It's not hard, you just don't stand in the goop and don't pull four packs at a time.

It's the first dungeon where they actually can get hurt, any of the other pre-50 dungeons a tank can take pretty much anything with a heal slut healing him constantly. In AV even with a dedicated heal slut, the mobs out damage the healing. So a lot of new tanks aren't used to that and end up pulling more then they can chew.

For hoards I'm just running through and getting intuition poms and stopping at 10 to repeat because they're the quickest. Sometimes you don't even need that and you get lucky finding one randomly standing around.

After ~15 or 16, main scenario quests toss you into a few dungeons in a row.

You will have to run dungeons for your main quest line. Most of the co-op shit doesn't really open up until 50 via PvP and content that requires a party to complete it.

I think it's a great MMO to start off with, it has a lot of built in tools to help newer players get on their feet as long as they pay attention and continue to learn.

the actual fight portion of it, as a WAR, wasn't hard. but for whatever reason both melee WoD decided to dry hump the area around the sword, and this meant Thancred was there as well. on top of it, the ranger WoD decided Thancred would make a fine target, so as Thancred is humping the sword, being humped by the WoD pld, and the WoD war is going after me, the sword is sitting there surrounded by like 6 clickable objects that all have much larger hitboxes than the sword does, and much more distinct visual profiles.

i think i just got unlucky in that sense tbh, and i was able to beat it easily once i help clear the field a bit by putting down the pld and war so Thancred would move his ass elsewhere but in the moment it was quite frustrating. watching the enemy meter tick up, urianger constantly telling me to give my aether to the sword, and me sitting there going "WHERE THE FUCK IS THE SWORD YOU PRISSY FUCK?!" ahhh. good times.

There is only one ghost town server, everything else is fine to packed and has a que even at off peak times.

And its not WoW so there isnt a huge raid scene anyway. The only folks you see complain are the wowfugees complaining that "these dumb hildibrand quests dont reward player power increases!" like the treadmill sluts they are.

Finally got around to getting Lancer to 30 to unlock dragoon and warrior to 27, the only two classes i dont have at 60. Maybe i will 60 everything before 4.0 if i can be arsed to get the last 30 levels on both of these.

every time I level up I do all the quests I can but I usually run out of quests at like 3/4 of the way to the next level (I'm currently level 39)

Luckily you can just run Palace of the Dead now, or do your daily level roulette.

FATE's are good filler too. at 39 you can easily run most anything in coerthas. check the party finder; if there's no FATE group up, start one on your own. chances are people will join in unless it's during off-hours. i managed to go from 36 AST to 42 AST in around two hours doing FATE's around camp dragonhead and whitebrim front. the Svara series alone is over half a level for a character in the high 30's.

Its a shame early access ruined the term survival. The most comfy times in early ARR where leveling culinarian and botanist. Going out into the north shroud for honey come and sugar to melt down into the ingredients for my first cookies that i cooked down by the river was the best. I used to not since materia seemed really expensive or really grindy. Nowadays though getting tier IV materia is easy and tier V is only slightly harder.

That and melding costs anywhere from 1k to 2.5k. if it's a IV or V yet people insist on leaving them empty.

when I said costs i meant the materia itself, nowadays its like 500k to 400k depending on materia but it used to be way higher.

If you are jizzing unicorn spunk full of 4 leaf clovers maybe, normally takes anywhere from 20 to 50 upwards to fully overmeld a single piece if you are melding 4's. It took me fucking 60 melds to get my final cp4 on my earrings.

Monk is too bothersome for me because its based on positioning to get the most dps, which is hard to maintain in a boss fight. NIN is much more flexible and straight forward.

Having taken all the classes to 60, I have to say NIN is probably the most technically intensive of the melee DPSes to be played optimally - weaving 4 mudras per minute, each in under a global cooldown, still needing to execute positionals (Aeolian, Armor Crush, Trick Attack), and having more OGCD cooldowns to monitor than the other two melees. When you get to that point, monk rotations is pretty relaxing by comparison. Could just be that I'm just more used to playing monk in general, so it's more down to muscle memory, but whenever I swap to NIN to change of face it seems to need a much more active playstyle.

I played ninja as my first class, took so long for me to even come close in DPS with similar gear. Still get left in the dust by most DPS classes all things even.

Then I made a warrior and now I 5 button mash my way to top DPS.

Overall, I find it a bit more fun than bard (the two classes essentially fill the same "physical ranged damage with some support ability" niche). Both classes rely quite a bit on luck (for bards, it's Rivers of Blood procs, for MCH, it's that when you do not have ammo, you only have a 50% chance to progress through your rotation each move.) While bards are almost entirely priority-based for ability use, MCH actually have somewhat of a rotation to fall back upon, and getting it down for their Wildfire is a must. That said, MCH have some of the most ungodly burst among all the classes, but fairly low sustained damage when they can't fall back on their cooldowns.

The fact that they can apply a 10% physical damage vuln. makes them slightly more favored than BRD in the current raid meta, if that matters. They recently made it so that ammo doesn't only last 30s after being loaded, which is a small but much needed change.

Summoner's one of the better PvP classes. Used to be veritable gods of burst until their Painflare/Deathflare got nerfed for PvP a few months back. Still pretty good though. Only thing to watch out for is that everyone gets access to the Purify PvP ability (wipe all debuffs - summoner DoTs included). It's on two-minute cooldown, but still, can fuck over a SMN when they're in the middle of unloading on a target.

Is the game worth coming back to?

pld is good fun. it gets kinda boring until 50+, when you get access to two new combos that branch from riot blade, as well as a low CD defensive ability that rewards skilled use. then pld becomes awesome.

drg gets much better when you have access to all 3 jumps (normal, spineshatter and dragonfire dive). at 50+ you get even more fun tools; new conditional skills, a very strong aoe party crit buff (that no other class has currently) and a 200 potency conditional line aoe that takes some practice to use right.

fun. different. lots of OGCD stuff to keep track of, and weave in and around your normal skills to coincide with wildfire. having some support utility with your turrets is nice too.

the /k/ in me also loves the mch questline where stephanivien makes the case for civilian arms ownership by talking about how a "well-trained and well-armed populace" would make defense of Ishgard a relatively trivial matter

you must be partying with shite dps m8. my experience has been mnk/drg/nin roughly equal on top, dependent on the fight mechanics, with blm/smn either close behind or slightly ahead, again depending on the fight, then mch/brd right behind them. blm/smn will perform above the melee dps with the help of Foe's Requiem, but only if they can optimally manage their high dps phases to match with the fight.

probably? loads of content, anima weapon's are much easier to attain (except the last stage, which is still a bitch), great fights in the recent patch, as well as the tying up of the Alexander storyline and a solid advancement of the MSQ, plus, most importantly, moar hildi!

should a tank be losing aggro in sastasha?

Depends on gear and experience level, but overall, not really. Spamming flash/overpower and doing or Fast Blade -> Savage Blade or Heavy Swing -> Skull Sunder on targets that the DPS are focusing on should be enough to keep enmity. Of course, a fresh new tank in whites is going to have a hard time keeping threat against level synched characters, since at that point they don't actually have their full tanking kit (which doesn't really come into fruition until level 30-40).

no tank should lose aggro cept really early on but really its only pld till flash.

I would love someone to find a good breakdown on DPS classes and what they should be pulling dps, because it really bothers me that 1/2 the time I am like top DPS by a 100 or so and then the other 1/2 the time I am getting BTFO by some BLM blazing it in the back.

possibly. but there's a stark difference between a dps class that really knows how to play the class, and someone who just is "dps." ive got drg at 60, but im nowhere near a great dps. i can do well enough in keeping BotD up and using Geirskogul right, but i still drop BotD a lot, or mis-time when i use it, i.e. popping it right before a phase change and it ends up running down and i have no ability to bring it back up when things resume and so i just have to wait for the CD.

take A12 for example; a blm or mnk who knows how to manage their CD's will blow everyone else out of the water during the add portion of phase 1. but plenty of dps get into the fight and blow their wad on Alex Prime so when the phase change comes around 80%, they're left with no good CD's and a bunch of adds to aoe.

from what i can tell, it takes a lot of practice, both for the classes and the fights. you need to know when to save your stuff and when to go balls out, especially on blm, smn and mnk.

This is a good example of what I am taking about, I can not understand this, I did almost the same DPS between the 2 runs, and while the first group was much higher overall raid DPS and the fight 1 min ended quicker, I can not figure out how I was so far behind the other Ninja. Then magically the second run I was top again by quite a bit.

Now on the 3rd boss on both runs I was schooled by a DRG and another NIN. I should note that in both these runs I was in a different group in the alliance so was it the buffs? Please let me solve this mystery Holla Forums

Gear and practice, user. Someone who spends all their time raiding and calculates each gear upgrade to maximize efficiency so they can have the perfect equipment and melds when they hit BiS will almost always do better DPS than a normal player.

Also you might be making mistakes in what you are thinking is a perfect rotation, record yourself and see if you aren't keeping your GCD rolling and if you're leaving skills off cd for too long

Although dragoons are notorious for having bad reputation because of fucking up mechanics, they are literally the easiest dps class you can pick up to get a feel for the game, if your patient enough you can try leveling it so you can at least get the crossclass skill blood for blood which is a dmg buff

I parse myself often whenever I think I am not doing the most dps I can, usually after getting punked by other DPS when I thought I was doing good, like in the examples above.

Idk how to really improve if I can't figure out what is going wrong.

Weapon and avg ilvl affects a lot

iirc my parses as mnk from ilvls were roughly as follows

180-1300
210-1600
240-1900
250 - 2100

make improving your weapon a priority. raw weapon damage is the single largest contributor to dps done. following that it's primary stat, then crit, then det/sks depending on class. but weapon damage is key, even if it's just one more damage it's a solid upgrade.

best way to improve also in my opinion is to practice on dummy while focusing on easy things such as keeping your offensive cooldowns and gcd constantly rolling, also recording yourself helps you notice mistakes better

I guess I have just have to do 1000 openers, 1000 parses, and 1000 cooldowns DAILY.

then it's the gear lvl/melds that they have over you. check out the official dps forums i guess. they tend to have good math crafts about that kinda stuff, soft caps to aim for and what not. bg forums too.
