Cho Ren Sha 68K

Remember when we used to play this game on Holla Forums many years ago? Unfortunately I don't have the animated PNG with me.

Anyways, Cho Ren Sha 68K is a homebrew freeware SHMUP developed in an age before Westerners ruined the indie scene, and before SHMUPs were only known for frilly girls with hats and lods of bullets. Great graphics, sweet FM music, and great gameplay await you.

The gameplay is simple, mash Z to shoot and press X to bomb, but the stage design is excellent. You can even take both boss machines out in the first stage if you get their giant ball projectiles to hit eachother at the same time. Even for a SHMUP this game is (comparatively) forgiving, shield and bomb pick-ups are frequent, but the game does take off in difficulty in the later stages.

If you think you are hardcore and want to show the casuals what Holla Forums should really be like, try this game out and post your score. With enough practice you'll conquer Stage 0 and the second loop.

For higher scores, you should not get hit, not bomb, and use the all-at-once pick-up trick. Power-up carriers drop a triangle of a power-up pick-up, a shield pick-up, and a bomb pick-up, which disappears if you touch one of the orbs. However, you can get all three at once if you manage to position yourself in the middle of the triangle long enough. This is important, because once a stock of a certain item is full (max power, max bombs, shield active), you get bonus points for that orb instead. For each orb you gain this way, the bonus score multiplier increases, from 100 pts to 200, 400, 800, and so on, up to 25600. With the all-at-once trick, you can get higher scores much faster. Scoring is important, because for every million points or so the next shield drop will turn into a 1-up.

You should run the game in Windows98 compatibility mode too in order to avoid choppy music. Check this article out for a more in-depth explanation of CRS68K: rgcd.co.uk/2011/10/cho-ren-sha-68k-pcsharp-x68000.html

Im monitoring this thread

Ah yeah, I think I remember this. I believe the creator had a hand in Blast Works for the Wii.

Gonna relax for a bit but I'll play and post score. I'm pretty ass at SHMUPS despite loving them though.

how do I get past stage 4? the airships boss is killing me

You can destroy the core part of the ship which automatically destroys both wings, but the core is harder to destroy. If your main shot is not fully powered up, it's better to just clear your way through by shooting off the wings first. In any case you want to destroy the wing turrets which can track you.

Desire to play fading

The tap fire rate is pretty high anyways, you won't suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome in any case. It's just something the developer included for nostalgia's sake when arcades didn't have autofire buttons, though I bet you can make an AHK script if it really bothers you. (Ironically, Cho Ren Sha sort of means Super Autofire in English)

Anyways, if you guys need more inspiration and strategies on how to tackle CRS68K, check out the STGWeekly episode

Real fun game, even if I kind of suck at it.

I haven't played in a bit, but I haven't really got past stage 4. I don't bother using the continue mode because that's kind of gay.

I would like to be able to watch entire episodes more but I don't have that kind of time.
Glad they go into such detail though.

keep your witchcraft out of here

Damn, this is groovy. Only got to 2nd stage boss in my blind first run, but I'll definitely keep going.

>mfw I whip out my arcade stick and suck tremendously at this
Had to remap stuff with JoyToKey and I must say I had an easier time playing Mushihime-sama with a 360 controller.

yo this game is legit.

Feels nice to play something other than Touhou.

I swear, if a shmup doesn't have good music, it just can't be a good game.

...

What do? Running Windows 7.

compatability mode with windows 98 (or Windows Service Pack 2). Also try running administrator settings

I right click -> troubleshoot compatibility and Windows says it's running it in Windows XP (Service Pack 2) but I have the same problem. Also tried running as admin to no effect. What can I do to get it in 98 compatibility mode?

Am I retarded, or can you not run this game in windowed mode?

Have you set it to Windows 98 in the Compatibility tab?

It's an old game for the Sharp X68000 ported to Windows, so that's not really possible AFAIK.

That thing is just a Catch-All not working most of the time.
Launch Compatibility Adminstrator from Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK) and research which individual setting the game actually requires.

Also some more tips:

Here's an interesting interview over designing the game by the developer, if anyone's interested:

heaven forbid, all those poor visual novels and h-games can no longer exist alongside such masterpieces as terraria and binding of isaac.

honestly, there are many good VNs out there which nobody here has played due to a lack of translation or the common notion that all VNs are just there for the porn.

My friend and I used to play this all the time, he had a crazy high score and was perfect at beating it on the hardest difficulty.
It has really solid gameplay, spirte style and the music is sweet.
The creator of the game sent us an autographed copy of the soundtrack along with a handwritten note.

You're Japanese?

Nope, murica, can't read his note but my friend was able to.
