Duolingo thread

The limits of my language are the limits of my world

ITT: we post our duolingo usernames and can use the progress sharing leaderboard feature to keep up with our practice

I'll start:

I just deleted my old account and started afresh, my username is ben_muir (duolingo.com/ben_muir), and I'm learning German.

why tho

workers of the world unite faggot, do you seriously expect all proles to learn english? do you think most even have the time?

have they added chinese yet? if not, NOT INTERESTED

Mia uzantnomo estas anones‌peranto kaj mi lernas esperanton. Mi jam finis la arbon sed mi ankoraŭ ekzerciĝas.

can we all learn Esperanto?

mi lernis esperanton per duolingo. ĝi estis amuzan eksperimenton, sed de neniu praktika uzo. mi forte rekomendas ĝin kiel unuan lingvon, tamen - ĝi helpis min kompreni gramatikon, kaj lerni aliajn lingvojn estas nun facile por mi

i learned esperanto with duoolingo. it was a fun experiment, but of no practical use. i would highly recommend it as a first language, however - it helped me to understand grammar, and to learn other languages is now easier for me

i haven't done it for a while now so i'm kind of rusty, but if enough people here were willing to start learning, i would take it up again and help people with questions and such.

not yet, and probably not for a while

fuck knows how they'll find a way to incorporate chinese characters

maybe someone might make one with pinyin, but it'd be pretty useless as you could only ever talk, not read

hello nsa

Duolingo is fucking cancer and it only panders to large groups.

I already know dutch and english, if you switch native language your progress gets fucked up, and they haven't even added mandarin, the largest language in the world, nor japanese for animu.

But somehow its got autistic shit like esparanto and klingon.

Fucking hell its just english, german and spanish mixed together. I dont even speak esparanto but I could read all of these words.

Use the normal input method that already exists? Enter in pinyin and then do the chinese reading excersizes with chinese characters?

i've been using memrise, it somehow avoids needing character input but still has a reading component

The Esperanto courses were made by volunteers. I think the same is true for Klingon.

I used Memrise for a while but they had some technical problems and I couldn't practice for days and even lost my streak. I was getting fed up with it either way, it's full of bugs and they try to get you to buy their pro membership all the time.

I say that the future communist society must be entirely in latin. Grumio est in horto.

...

correct, the vocabulary is not the attraction, it's the grammar

having studied both esperanto and natural languages, i realise just how wonderful it is to have perfectly regular grammar with no irregular verbs

the fact that each class of word (noun, adjective, verb, etc) has its own suffix to denote it is fantastic as well as it removes so much ambiguity from a sentence

of course, i understand why esperanto will never catch on, but i would nevertheless highly recommend it, as a simple exercise in the "perfect" language if nothing else

correct

in fact all the courses except the main ones (french, german, and spanish for english speakers) are made by volunteers

if you want a chinese or japanese course, find some native speakers and get them to make one!!

Bump for esperanto

I would but the google+ shit put my real name all over it

Fucking NSA reeeeeeeee

...

Wait just a minute, Muir.

Do you like Sranan Tongo?

I made the mistake of trying to handle to many languages at once so it left me with little progress

They will never add Chinese or Japanese because of how those languages work in written form. The system cant handle it and says so somewhere in the forums. Vietnamese is available now and Korean is being worked on.

I know that feel

god damn it let's just get on with making esperanto a mandatory language in all schools

...

Just learn vocabulary with anki, grab a grammar book, and practice with qts on interpals. Shit site is shit.

normies out

I guess you could just shitpost on foreign sites too… just more fun when I've got random girls flirting with me.

I'm doing French and Spanish at the same time…

It's somewhat petty of me…but I have purposefully not learned those languages since my parents can speak both languages and I don't speak either.

i wish

This. Fuckin' get on it duofags.

Studies demonstrate if you learn 2 languages and one of them is Esperanto you will learn the other quicker than if you learned it solo.

Go learn Esperanto rn comrades. It helps with all other languages extremely much.

how the fuck can they handle Korean and Vietnamese and not other asian languages?

wtf

it's not about being pretentious, it just seems useful, especially for socialists

Esperanto estas mojosa

What are Holla Forums's thoughts on Lojban?

Pretty cool but useless

That sounds fucking retarded. If my book can handle this shit, so can that thing. All the excersizes are hand made anyway.

no(?)

esperanto mojosas

ftfy

Both are correct??

yes but it's always best to condense for clarity

and using adjectives as verbs is becoming increasingly common among the eo community, to the point that it will likely eventually be the accepted norm

best to stay ahead of the curve

wait

rebel is that u

Ambiguity is a real problem in communication. The world would be better off all speaking lojban than, say, all speaking esperanto.

lojban is notoriously difficult to learn - esperanto was designed with the intention of being as easy to learn as possible (and having studied it, i can confirm it succeeds in this task)

have some pragmatism comrade

I think mass use of any auxiliary language is pretty much a pipe dream. My point is simply that in such widespread use it has several advantages over others. Discourse is often severely hindered by imprecise phrases and language can conceal many reasoning fallacies, for instance.
