Morrowind Thread: mistakes were made edition

Let's have a Morrowind thread. Talk about Lore, talk about mods, talk about game. As a first topic, OpenMW is accelerating in it's release schedule, which means we're closer to sculpting Morrowind into perfection, so I think we should come out and name some flaws, and suggest how they can be fixed.
What are your major gripes?
Do you think x person's idea is shit? Why?
If you don't like the game or you're going for that epic karma with the obvious "nothing will make this game good" posts, you can keep that shit to yourself.
If you want to just talk about the game, treat this like a general. Gameplay improvement is just what I want to talk about first.

Number one complaint across the board, and for good reason. Currently the only feedback you get to indicate a miss, is a "whoosh" sound. Visual feedback, which is much more important in video games, does not change to indicate the failure. Instead you get to watch your blade pass uselessly through whatever you're trying to kill. This can be easily alleviated with the addition of a "failed swing" animation. Your character has a low skill, make it look like he has no idea what he's doing. Swing that axe backwards, spank the enemy with the sword, show them losing grip mid-swing. The base game already has dodge and block animations, but they're not used nearly enough.
We read really cool stories in the lore and even sometimes see the more dangerous side of learning the arcane arts. The lost students at the college of Winterhold, out of control scamp in Morrowind. Add those effects into the game. I want to see the fireball fizzle out in a useless puff. I'd like to freeze myself accidentally. Learning wizards shouldn't have eyebrows. It would make magic much more exciting if every time you summoned a daedra you had to deal with the potential consequence that you can't control it, or even deal with unintended mystery effects.
Why do I feel like I'm turning into a diaper?
Would be cool as hell. I'd feel like an actual mage. Include that shit for alchemy too. Only way to find out the effect is to drink it! Or force something else to…
Skyrim sort of got this right, but like everything in that game it was half-assed. The different secondary effects of destruction spells were cool, but usually negligible since enemies had infinite magicka and stamina, and nothing resisted fire significantly. Maces, warhammers, and the like all had specialized perks, but only the sword one was useful since enemies have low armor skill and crits are worthless. What I want is to make those weapons accurate to their historical specializations, and that is maces and hammers to armor, axes to medium armor and shields, swords for stabbing armor and slashing unarmored foes. Halberds should have increased stagger on the swing, since the point of those things is to pull your enemy to the ground. Spears have a special niche as mega-fauna slaying implements.
Currently Morrowind has what I would describe as floaty tank controls. The movement is not as weighty as it should be. For satisfying movement, most games should be able to pass the "circle test" as I like to call it, which entails that I should be able to press wasdwasd and move in a tight circle. A good example of a pass is the scout from TF2, that shit feels great. Air physics are also royally fucked and make jumping anywhere feel like ass. Even Doom moves better than Morrowind.
That pretty much sums up my thoughts.

I want to play this but I never know which mods to use, and there's so many of them that I just get bored and give up putting everything together. Some of the mods seem to fix really broken stuff so I don't want to just play vanilla.

I just used the sound and graphics overhaul with the morrowind code patch for my first playthrough.

Nothing will make this game good. :^)

Good for you OP but why don't you kill yourself?

1. All of the "official plug-ins", which are DLC but were made before the Xbox 360 was a thing so it was free.

2. Unofficial Patch Project.

That's it. That's all you need. You're done there. That's as vanilla-but-also-not-broken as you get.

Personally, I play with the Morrowind Acoustic Overhaul and the Morrowind Watercolored texture pack. Makes the world look like a painting, sound like a movie, and it preserves the vanilla art direction. That's my sound and graphics overhaul.
Other than that you'll want to download a bunch of rebalances and bugfixes.

I don't just have ideas, I have the means and the knowledge to accomplish them. I'm just fishing for more because I know from collaborating with other modders and seeing other people try and tackle these issues that personal autism can ruin a project. Why would anyone ask for problems if they wanted someone else to solve them?

Unrelated note, Tamriel Rebuilt is cool as fuck and is probably the best thing to come into my life since forever. I actually visited pic related, and it gave me such a sense for the scale of the world that for the first time ever I felt like I was in Tamriel. Changed the way I played, now I do nothing but hardcore RP. I actually took a swim off the pier of wolverine hall just for the heck of it after turning in a bounty. Highly recommend.

The overhaul mod is a good one, although outdated. I'd recommend you installing it all manually. That way everything works a lot better and smoother.
Borderless is also recommended, faster loading times and more FPS.

An actual competant engine

Lets not, TES was always shit

the only thing i want is AI thats not shit
nothing takes me out of the game more then when some big bad gets stuck on a fucking rock and does the floaty run animation trying to get past it.

>This can be easily alleviated with the addition of a "failed swing" animation.

That's adding several similar races times several wildly different weapon animations. And it's still going to look stupid when it takes a dozen hits to kill a rat or mudcrab with a dagger.

Making the attack effects on the target look more impressive would be more rewarding, have failed swings do practically no damage or only remove stamina. But that's even more work.

The close combat in this game is fundamentally flawed. You walk up, arm weapon and click. Stamina goes down, an RPG formula is executed and it's either a hit or miss. You'd have to redo it completely to make it more engaging and not just make it look more engaging with extra animations.

You have to keep in mind agility, strength, acrobatics and how weighed down the character is should affect the feeling of movement. Beast races need to feel different from humanoids too. Tightening all that up plus swimming and flying/jumping is a tall order.

I have several ideas for morrowind mods but I don't like being an idea guy, I couldn't take the harsh criticism a place like this provides without testing my ideas out first and knowing that they're any good. For all I know they could be terrible and I'd rather learn that on my own.

When's OpenMW?

Everytime I played this I would constantly add more mods on until I thought it would be good, but it really wasn't. How about we don't have a Morrowind thread.

It's in a playable state right now as far as I know, haven't tried it myself, personally.

sage isn't a downvote, reddit

I have played through vanilla so many times now and im still not bored, tried tamriel rebuilt a while back and loved it. Shame that there is no loot to be found and the guild questlines were unfinished but that will of course change, is there an approximate release date now? I havent checked in years

Are there any mods that let you become undead

tamriel-rebuilt.org/
Dunno about the release date but–

My body is not ready for all the provinces that are to come never ever

I can't wait till this works properly.

The Illuminated Order.

Shit mod with a ton of overpowered gear.

The only thing which I really miss from Morrowind is a crafting system above alchemy and enchanting, and a survivalist/weather system akin to Skyrim's Frostfall.

Imagine how comfy it would have to be if you suddenly see there's a blight storm inbound and you have to wait out until the storm drops - or face an almost guaranteed blight disease.

Also, randomized loot for chests is literally the devil. It's garbage 99% of the time.

Play a bit of vanilla, and find mods to change anything you can't stand. As you go through more of the game, you'll have a better idea of what you want to change. I definitely reccomend a levelling mod like GCD to start with, though.

Sound and Graphics Overhaul is cancer. Do not use under any circumstances.

Yeah, I've been playing through for the first time using OpenMW and haven't encountered any game-breaking bugs yet. If anything it seems more stable and less glitchy than the native game.

Missing in Morrowind is really only a problem if you're an idiot child who never played any other CRPGs before.

The Morrowind Overhaul can be very taxing and only works with the Steam version. If it slows down, look carefully at the Morrowind Graphics Extender it includes or install it and desired texture packs separately

Morrowind Multiplayer PvP could easily be some of the craziest combat ever put into practice. Just think of all of the shit a high level character would be able to throw around:

Jesus.

Considering the engine its using.

Someone could actually make some dumb deathmatch kinda thing with it.

or certain multiplayer game modes when multiplayer actually expands.
Sorta like how garrys mod has TTT.

Number 1 thing I want to see is a mod that makes Unarmed actually good. Engine limitations make it so that fists can only do fatigue damage until the enemy gets knocked out, which is pretty dumb. To make matters worse, the damage they do take once they get knocked out is stupidly low.

That's because without fatigue potions hand-to-hand can be incredibly powerful against PC/NPCs. Especially at low levels, I would expect satan to know this. Unarmed is fucked, has been in every game

Hand to Hand is good in Morrowind I should say, its just boring and tedious as fuck.

Oblivion had some pretty good hand to hand mods at least.

Why do I do this to myself? I just want comfy RP and immersion!

FUCK CRAFTING! If you want to grind cow hides go back to fucking runescape , fucking skyrimkiddies. Spell crafting, enchantment, and alchemy are the only acceptable, /comfy/ TES crafts.

I was under the impression that all loot in Morrowind's containers were hand placed, unlike Oblivion and Skyrim.

Containers within bandit caves have loot that changes depending on your level. You can get better scrolls and soulgems from them but that's about it. Enemies and the likes only scale to a certain point and stop. It never goes overboard. I think it was done just right since you're bound to visit a bandit cave full of weak enemies. But since you're higher level they're a joke but the loot inside the cave is decent enough for you to actually visit the place. Blightstorms are already annoying though as it makes exploration really tough for me.

Currently doing a playthrough with the newest Morrowind Rebirth version myself. I'm doing my first ever mage build. Doing heavy armor, destruction and hand to hand. It's a tough build but I'm trying to make it work.

1.0 was gonna be this year but then their best dev stepped down, now maybe years end 2018 it will be 1.0, by 2020 we can have some fancy features like distant worlds, a pbr solution is in the works but I'm unsure if it will get anywhere.

At least they got one thing right, holy shit it was a pain finding anything in Morrowinds .bsa files

vs

JUST FUCK MY SHIT UP

One issue with modernizing Morrowind will be the need for a core.esm to hold lots of the new content to maximize compatibility. If say someone made a new npc system that allowed for face/body customization then for Tamriel Rebuilt you would need to install the base mod then the new npcs and then the compatibility patches for every major mod, what a mess it would be easier if they aimed to have 1 core esm to hold this data and build their mods to it. This issue would compound with things like:

Imagine having to make 6 patches x major mods, fuck that. There's always another side to this though, there's the issue of what's considered core content, some people may not want a crafting or survival system, a mod menu could turn these off however, but then if you are replacing npcs you're going to need to replace the in game armors as well and some players won't like that either, maybe we should just throw these people off the boat and sail into the future.

Morrowind MP actually looks surprisingly fun to goof off in.

He didn't step down he's just taking it slower

github.com/scrawl

But 2018 seems reasonable at the current rate

Shit mod? How?

Did anyone ever find the two guys M'aiq mentions to enable multiplayer? Was it any good?

He stepped down from his massacre of pushing out major work year round and does hardly anything nowadays, not that he's at fault for doing what he wants. ironically he still does the most work and zini is still the lead developer and gets to say that they won't be implementing mwse scripting functionality or working at phasing out the shitty mwscript while keeping legacy compatibility and replacing it with smooth, industry standard lua script even though there were actual coders working to implement that.

i knew wikipedia search was bad but not this bad

Guys can we talk a little bit about skyrim? I wanted to recreate one of my old webm's and went to youtube to redownload the video when I noticed that most of the sex modes I used got updated by now.

I thought I install skyrim again and spend a entire day installing shit. Now the problem is skyrim is still shit as soon as I am done jerking off. Are there any interesting mods you can recommend me?

I was thinking of quest mods and shit like that so I have more shit to do. I installed a more bandit mod so I have more fights and shit.

it's not just wikipedia, websites usually have shit search. That's why I always search everything trough google using their "site:" feature.

Fuck those tiny monsters like rats and bugs. They should just remove them completely or only make them appear around Seyda Neen. I love morrowind as it is and usually play it pretty much vanilla (+ MCP) but one thing that really annoys me is those tiny weak enemies that are piss easy to kill. People say that those flying things are irritating but at least they can be dangerous when you're a low level noob so they serve a function. Killing rats and bugs is almost as lame as leveling your acrobatics by spamming the jump button.

I'm sure there's a mod that could fix this but I wanted to say it anyway. More Nix-hounds and two-legged dinos, less tiny enemies. Also, the Nix-Hounds are a bit too weak for my taste, but at least they're not rat-sized.

I'm legitimately curious how hard it would be to mod something like Severance's or Dark Messiah's combat systems into Morrowind wholesale with OpenMW of course. Or hell even something like Dork Souls which is essentially Severance but still

>tfw no working porn mods

nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/372/?

why is the game play so shit and the world so hideous? Why does it look worse than games two years older than it?

Unarmed+unarmored is OP as long as you uncap skills and attributes, and even if you don't it's still pretty fun.

Morrowind Code Patch + Unofficial Patch + MGE XE. That's it.
