Not really, there have always been different opinions on the permissibility of drawing living things. Many Muslims feel that drawing living things of more secular subjects is not against Islamic law and that is by no means a new opinion as painting was an established art in most traditional Islamic societies for almost a thousand years, usually tied to the arts of the book, royal portraiture, depiction of religious and political histories, etc.

The whole "all living things are haram" is probably more of an Arab thing as Persians, Turks, Mongols and Indians had less problem with it, especially Shi'a in Iran and Central Asia. Painting was huge in the Ottoman, Safavid/Qajar and Mughal worlds and many of the most celebrated painters of that period were also often trained in Islamic law themselves.

A key feature of Islamic painting though was that it generally avoided naturalism for the most part.

Christianity can be selective in how they apply certain ethical ideas of the Old Testament, but what the Old Testament says is still relevant. If it wasn't, then Marcion of Sinope would have been correct in exorcizing the whole thing and just keeping the New Testament. And even today, the debate of which parts of the Old Testament are most relevant to a Christian's life still goes on, especially now that everyone owns a Bible and isn't totally dependent on their fucking priests.

Orthodox men don't normally shave their beards.
