can anyone please, please explain how to install the HEXA mods for AA2? I've got AA2Install, and installed the virgin edition and patched it with the HF patch, but I can't get AA2Install to recognize the HEXA mods. I thought I could ignore it but a huge portion of the downloaded characters I've got are either completely black due to skin tone errors or have hilariously fucked up heads/bodies.

Also, does anyone have a working link to the body mod? I managed to find the HEXA hair and override mods, but it seems like in all the pastebins I've found they point to a body mod that I am just too retarded to track down.

It'll take time to learn, obviously, but modern 3D game engines are simple enough that the retards in the indie clique can use them. Go read/watch some tutorials on, and then pirate, Unity or UE4. It's harder than 2D, but still well within reach for anyone who's dedicated and not genuinely retarded. Just don't get frustrated if you don't know everything immediately, and you'll do fine.

Basic 3D modeling is also not super hard. You're right that you'd be best off having a dedicated artist, but it's well within reach if you really wanted to do it yourself. If anything, I'd say texturing is more difficult than the actual modeling process.

UV mapping's not too hard, you just need to unwrap your head around it and understand how it works. AGDG has plenty of resources for 3D modelling basic and advanced.
If you're talking about the art you use to make textures, you'd probably need to check out drawthreads for their resources.

You can use placeholder textures, or just colors. It'll still need a rig, though.

The actual act of texturing is not especially hard, but doing it well is tricky. You have to specify to your computer how to unfold the 3D model as though it were a sheet of paper that had been cut into that shape, so it unfolds logically, and then paint the unfolded sheet of paper in photoshop, knowing where all of the pieces go. This means that you need to have not just good spacial reasoning abilities, but art abilities. Here's an example of a really shit job that I did to learn.

That's part of the hard part. You'd have to pre-warp the textures in such a way that they un-warp when applied to the model.

Yes, that's why I said I did a shit job. You have to unwrap it effectively enough that you can paint/draw on it effectively and still have it show up on the model looking right. This is also why you need to be decent enough at art to be able to know when/how that's happening and how to handle it or work around it. In these circumstances, like said, you can draw the image so that it's shaped incorrectly on your screen, but when it's put onto the model, looks correct.

Typically is just through RAII. You still have to manually free memory allocated on the heap, but you usually don't have to, because you use lightweight stack structures that clear their owned memory when they go out of scope.

If you need something a little more flexible, you'd usually use smart pointers, which are reference-counted and destroy themselves when they lose all their references. This is generally safe as long as you don't have any chance of circular references (such as a badly-designed circular linked list or the like), or you intelligently design your structure with weak pointers to negate the possibility of a reference loop (or "circular reference", "cyclic reference", or "circular dependency" as they're more commonly called).

C++ has "new" and "delete" instead, but they're usually just a thin wrapper around "malloc" and "free" that forces type safety and makes sure the proper things are called. Usually you'd use new in container classes, though, so that you can let your scopes handle all the memory management. Classes in C++ have destructors, which are similar to "finalize()" in Java, but if they're stack objects, they're guaranteed to be called as soon as the object goes out of scope (before any more instructions may execute at all), and if they're on the heap, they're called when "delete" is called on them.

Garbage collection has its place, but I personally absolutely love scope-based memory management (which is what RAII should have been called, because RAII is a stupid acronym which only describes half of the paradigm), because it allows you to do some really nice tricks wrapping complex underlying types and libraries (Wrapping a C library with C++ is incredibly easy, because it logically maps to construction and destruction most of the time), and also lets you manage any scope in any way you wish (like creating a mutex lock that specifically lasts until the end of a scope, or network code that handles disconnecting automatically).

I'm sure Java offers some of these features; I haven't used Java in quite a few years.

Smart pointers are neat, but they are exactly as simple as they sound, so you have to be very cautious if you're using them for anything complex (like a self-building tree or anything that can have back-references) or you may end up coding in memory leaks. With something incredibly complicated like an arbitrary graph you'd usually want to just have a list or something that holds all the nodes and have all the nodes reference one-another via weak pointers or raw pointers so you can free them just by deleting the list.
If you're careful with ownership, you can always avoid shooting yourself in the foot, though.

I heard about destructors in C++, as an addendum when I learned to use Java constructors. They don't sound too hard to utilize at least, does the regular compiler make them automatically or do I have to do the job myself? Java does make it's constructors auto at least

Either, depending on the context. Pretty much, it'll auto-generate some basic constructors for you, but if you define some of your own, it will suppress the generation of the others. This is essentially to separate "Plain Old Data" classes from full-fledged classes. POD classes have some special semantics and can be constructed in more convenient ways, because the compiler doesn't have to worry about side-effects or special setup through the constructor.

Resource Allocation Is Initialization. Essentially, it's the same thing that Java has, which is the constructor. It means that if you declare an object and get the memory associated, you're guaranteed to have a valid object, unlike C, where you allocate memory and then initialize, and if initialization fails, you have a defunct block of memory. With C++, it usually implies the full scope-based resource management though.

Text adventures are fun to make, but if you're going in blind it quickly becomes a mess. That shit forces you to hone your organization when you're not using a framework that does everything for you.
I made a Pokemon text adventure, with the idea that I'd add graphics and an overworld engine later to make it a full game. I cracked out the full battle engine in a few days, and it was perfect. No bugs, ran fine, everything worked as expected, and I had all the pokemon and moves from the first two generations working perfectly. A month later, and all I had of the "text adventure" part was a nightmarish mess of switch statements and string literals all over the fucking place and I had to find a way to logically move between areas without causing a stack overflow, but the only other way I knew how was another nightmarish layer of a state machine in my loop.

I was also a novice programmer; it was about 10 years ago, when I was just getting started, but holy shit that was terrible.

I see, thanks for the info. The text adventure I mentioned was for a college project, and it did pretty good. There was another group that tried to replicate Pokemon Colosseum in C, without graphics. I had a look at their code a few days before the deadline. My group's text adventure had roughly 200 lines of code in it's main, the rest being the graph and list files. The pokemon group had a whooping 11500 lines of code. Their game was pretty solid, adding music and cute menus, but it had a fatal flaw: the evolution system was botched. You'd have to imagine my surprise when my pidgey evolved into a cascoon and still retained peck.

You get this goddess armor and a massive attack boost but the fucking last monster has 500k hitpoints which forces you to get a specific item to drop it down to 40k hp yet it can attack 3+ times and most of its magic is really powerful.
