The second added some improvements (various levels of water instead of binary "is in water/is out of water", flares, other minor QOL improvements and the awesome mid-air roll) but didn't break as much ground, the third was more buggy and then they just got worse until Angel of Darkness was so terrible the series had to be rebooted. Then the reboot happened and Legends was decent, Anniversary was good to great, and then Underworld shit the bed once again and the series was rebooted. Again.

The series was at its best when it was an unashamed Indiana Jones B-movie game with T&A, not trying to be deep and "mature" by presenting stronk womynz who use the word cunt and shoot dudes in the face and cry about it and then shoot fifty dudes in the face without blinking.

Old Lara wasn't generic, she had fucking fun doing what she did. She was a Thrillseeker and a bit of a Sadist and that got carried over to the Player. Sadly they toned that down after the first reboot and only her Clone acted like the real Lara.

Tomb Raider 5 is more like a Add On to Tomb Raider 4 and is made of 4 Mini Stories, which also contain different challenges.

First Story play before Tomb Raider 1 and is your normal Tomb Raider 4 City Level.
Second Story is thematically a throwback to Tomb Raider 2 "stop the mafia to get artifact X", just instead of Italians and Chinese, you shot at Russians.
Third Story is interesting, because you play it as 16 year old Teenager Lara complete without weapons and it has a heavy Occult theme.
And the last Story is similar to the Nevada Levels from Tomb Raider 3, lots of security systems and soldiers to fight and/or avoid. It introduced Lara's hacker sidekick that shows up in the movies and its story also connects to Tomb Raider 4.

Got my Dualshock 3 set up on my PC now and I've started replaying the old Tomb Raider games. Only the first one has given me any problems but from TR2 onwards they all support native resolutions of 1080p. The only issue there are the very small HUD elements that don't scale.

And it's made me realise that action adventure games with open maps are my comfy zone. Tomb Raider, Zelda, Dark Souls, Witcher 3 even, these are my jam. Having a big titted adrenaline junkie MC is just icing on the cake.

It's not a matter of them trying to remove guns because they hate guns(although they do) but the young female demographic they're trying to get being turned off by them. They did have Lara with guns on a mockup cover but that didn't do well in testing, not while The Hunger Games was a social phenomenon.

My issue is the new Tomb Raider is obviously designed to pander to a specific demographic that never cared for it and every aspect of the character and brand is focus group tested to the point of absurdity. Like most modern 3d platformers, the earlier Tomb Raider titles suffer from a rather wonky camera system which requires a bit of getting used to. Otherwise, there's no real reason against it.

I don't think the tomb raiders aged well in the era of the Internet, it's less exploration and more "fuck it I'll check a guide" after 20 minutes of being lost.

Anniversary is a decent little game, but very different feel to the original which is very lonely.

Fair enough, though you can't really blame it on the games themselves, but more on how casualized modern games and level design has become.

I mean, you can overdo it (cf. Smithsonian Horror in Duke Nukem DC), but it is no result that the average gamer has an attention span of twenty seconds when games get endlessly streamlined.

The lack of any open air sections between locales make the whole game incredibly claustrophobic; being in a dark tomb is fine but when you're launched straight into another one on the other side of the planet without so much as a glimpse at the open sky it can be a real downer; I much preferred 2 as a result.

The first 4(5?) games have the same controls and gameplay, the controls are fine for the platforming sections, which is 80% of the games, but the combat is horrendously bad.

I don't think it's an attention span thing. We've all been lost in a game for 30-60 minutes and just felt like putting the controller down and giving up on the whole thing. If you can't find the hidden switch after 30 minutes and you've looked every where you can find or the story's just told you to go some where you have no idea how to find then I don't think it's unreasonable to use a guide.

It just changes what the game is because of outside factors. Same way a movie set in the world trade centers is now a very different movie than intended through no fault of it's own.

Dude she is 29 in Tomb Raider 1 from 1996. She is in her 30s during the time span of Tomb Rider 2 to Tomb Raider 6. Another user mentioned, that the series lost its sense of adventure after Tomb Raider 3, but that is because Lara Croft did age as a Character over the course of the Games. Lara fucks up during Tomb Raider 4, unleashes fucking Egyptian Armageddon upon the World and is almost killed at the end of it. So it made sense that she was constantly angry in Tomb Raider 6.(Tomb Raider 5 being a series of flashbacks.)

I recently watched this trailer for the latest Rise of the Tomb Raider DLC where Lara (finally) returns to her mansion which is in ruins.

To my surprise the layout of Croft Manor is the same as in Legend and Anniversary (don't know about Underworld, never played it thanks to Xbox 360 exclusive DLC).
This would make Tomb Raider - A survivor is born and Rise of the Tomb Raider prequels to Crystal Dynamics' first TR trilogy but not to Core Design's hexalogy.

Hence, nuLara isn't from an alternate dimension or different universe but
utterly and completely canon!
