Romance was already explored somewhat. If I remember correctly from one of the earlier games, you and your partner Pokemon adopted a child of their own. And if your pokemon and the partner pokemon were opposite genders, they would even call you two mom and dad. It's not in the gameplay, but rahter it's a post-post game ending.

I looked into it a little more, turns out it is in gameplay after all. You recover Manaphy's egg in a dungeon in the post game and it hatches into a Manaphy and you and your partner look after it. It then goes back to what I explained before until it grows up enough that it leaves for a while. It does come back later after growing even more and even becomes recruitable.
