City Building General

I had a blast playing this growing up. How's Caesar 3 compare? Any somewhat modern city builders that aren't about modern cities (eg Sim City, Cities: Skylines)?

Bump

i'm ready for the new kalypso game Urban Empire
anyone else hype?
anyone else know of any Tropico like games?

10/10 gotyay best game ever

Seriously, you are missing out if you haven't played it yet.

Zus and Pusseidon

Is factorio city building?

Otherwise I've been playing Grand Ages: Rome (not sure that's the right name) a bit.

Lethis: Path of Progress is a modern take on the genre. Can't speak to how good or bad it is since I haven't played it.

THEBEST THEBEST THEBEST
I would recommend the 10th anniversary edition on GoG, based on the second game
Settlers like game with some difference, KaM: Remake is good version of it, check moddb. I personally love it, but mostly because of nostalgia.
A very nice city builder. Haven't played too much of it tho.
I haven't played it either but from an early review it looks like it's a bit lacking compared to the old Sierra citybuilders. It may have changed since tho, I would just play the old ones.
It's absolutely not a city builder. You create and manage a factory.
These are some other similar games that might be interesting, I don't have much experience with them either.
Great games. Focused more on resource management and trading.

Where did it go wrong, Holla Forums?

I enjoy it, but it feels like there could be so much more.

If you could add one thing to make C:S better, what would it be?

To make it run better on my shit PC. I only played around 40-50 hours with a pirated version, my biggest annoyance was fucking around with the traffic, but the performance killed the game for me.

Having more than four buildings so your whole city isn't the fucking same shit every five feet.

I bet you faggots don't even play Afterlife.

Yeah, the performance isn't that good. It would be nice if it ran a little better when you started building a ton of shit and traffic was everywhere.

Download the growable buildings people made. They give a better variety in your city.

Is that a hair-dyed Brianna Wu on the advisor panel?

I second this. Caesar 3 is like crack to me.

Just saw the trailer, looks gud.

How does Caesar 4 compare to 3? It looks like it made a jump to 3D, but I'm guessing it got shitty

Does Patrician III count as a city builder? I guess it technically is when you become lord mayor.

Either way I've been binging on that so I can fulfill my merchant fantasies.

The thing that killed my urban planning boner was the lack of office skyscrapers. Unfortunately you have to download an ass-load of said buildings as mods, but before that was an option; I downloaded a sci-fi, Blade Runner-esque building set for commercial and zoned half of downtown with it. Looks pretty good and functional.

As far as Caesar III goes, has anybody reached the building limit? I regret trashing my Lindum save, I used about 2/3 of the map before hitting the building limit.

What was the recommended mod for Banished again? If I recall correctly, it added tiered goods, on top of other things.

Cities: Skylines is aptly named, all you have room for is the downtown, skyline, section of a city.
It desperately needed a region system like sc4, and better low density industry options, forestry and farms just look retarded in it.

So I got around to buying Caesar 3 on Steam and … wow it didn't hold my interest at all.

Feels bad man

No, Wu looks worse.

This, I played Pharaoh and Zeus nonstop when I was a child.
The best thing is I never really played the Poseidon expansion so coming back to it makes it almost brand new.
I also never new about colonies which is fucking sick

Pharoah however is fucking awesome for all the missions it has, the campaign was fucking insane.

Predetermined spray patterns always pissed me off. I'd start there.

It's not that bad. The main problem with it is that the maps are too small.

I know, it just didn't grab me. I wanted to just jump in and play shit and mess around, Caesar 2 had leagues better presentation

DAILY REMINDER
There has never been a game to come close to the masterpiece of Sim City 4 on any metric.
a game from 2003 performs better, is funner, has more content, more depth, and better graphics than a "modern" city builder.

this is painfully true.
I have to wonder if maybe there are just a bunch of things trademarked and copywritten in that game that others are afraid of coming close to touching.

It's not that, It is the fall of the quality of video games. Sim city 4 was written by REAL programmers with REAL skill.
now a days, video games are made by blue haired college girls who click and drag some things in the unity game engine.

we easily have the tech to recreate the 2.5D engine of SC4 on such a greater level of detail and have significantly more complex simulations, RIGHT NOW but no one is going to do it because no one has the skill, money, or vision.

I use OpenTTD as a city builder. Despite the lack of zoning, diagonal roads and in-depth economy, it's really satisfying to see your rural 1850's trackside town grow into a beautiful, modern metropolis. The mods make it so easy to customize everything, from road infrastructure to architecture, non-road vehicles, industries, etc. You can make a replica of Venise with its many canals, a soviet industrial town, even west european Alps with ski slopes. If you're into micromanagement, you're better off with Cities: Skyline, SC4 and the like, but if you're looking to just create beautiful cities, this is a game definitely worth checking out. It helps if you're a trainfag/busfag/airplanefag though.

LOVED this game as a kid before I even knew what was going on.
Its a simple system, but the craftsmanship is there, I would not mind a sequel if it were as zany.

How does one get good at making a city that doesn't look like shit?

I have no innate skill with aesthetics at all.

Kill all jews.

take your meds sperg

porn is bad for you user, go out and meet a real girl.

Say what you want about modern games, but at least they more or less work universally

hastebin.com/raw/fawufuwini

But user, I have a girlfriend and I still watch porn.

I downloaded Caesar III yesterday and, man, it's way harder than I remember. I'm out of practice in regards to city-builders and the last one I played was Zeus which is piss easy in comparison to Caesar and Pharaoh. Time to git gud,

bumping with OTTD porn

can any city builder trigger my autism as hard as factorio does?

shits nearly cost me everything

I just wanna build cities, and have unique and cool citizens. Also being mod friendly would be a plus, because I've always wanted to mod in Superhero's to my game.

so you want the sims in your c:s ?

In a way.

No one can deny the success of SimCity 4, and the Sims in general. As much as I like C:S, it didn't really give off the feel that the population was actual people living in your city.
CIM's really just go to work, the store, and school. I want a more fleshed out population, where if certain area's are too poor or neglected, crime pops up and if those issues aren't addressed, vigilantes will take matters into their own hands. People can be murdered in my ideal City Builder game, and people can riot and loot places. And more importantly, I want to be able to sick my police on the rioters and looters when they start being pains in the ass.

That, and as a fan of capeshit, I just really wanna see a game where a superhero has a brawl with a supervillain and you are stuck cleaning up the mess.

sounds like you need more tropico in your life

playing old games is a nonissue since DosBox is a thing

with more modern svn builds you can even plop Win95/98 there and emulate Voodoo graphics

I wish Cities XL/XXL/doesn'tmatterit'sallthesamegame ran on more than 1 core, or didn't have memory leak issues.

The bullshit surrounding that game is immense, which makes me sad, cause it had such potential.

I had such a fond memory of that game.
Just looking into the citizens had a charm of it's own.

I know but dosbox is a way to standardize hardware so you play old games without an issue.

The thing i posted recommends making a fucking bootdisc just to play the game if things were incompatible. With dosbox, if you download it as a package from sonewhere you literly just double click it and the game runs no problem

seems like C:S should've added more than just aesthetics in their xpacs
ah well

bamp

How would you fix this? Offhand, I think that needing businesses to require a road to the city edge to be supplied would be a good start, because they it requires some semblance of connectivity. As far as the money thing goes, I would make provincial building more expensive as well, I suppose.

Rise of the Middle Kingdom so good, I wish someone would Mod to remove the sprite cap.

The music is fantastic, graphics fantastic, game play fantastic. Just fucking 10/10 for me.

and there was this quote from one of the heroes about Chiron and mousaka, but i can't for the life of me remember it

How is Children of the Nile compared to Pharaoh?

why?

That shouldn't be difficult to do with a debugger.

What is the difference between openTTD and Simutans?

Playing Pharaoh vs Zeus back to back recently made me realize just how easy mode Zeus really way.

I find Zeus more enjoyable than Pharaoh. I don't know if it's because I'm a scrub or if Zeus has more charm. Both games are really good, of course.

OpenTTD isn't shit, for one. It has more settings, more mods, more everything. Simutrans is basically what OTTD was 5 years ago

Serious lack of screens itt. Show me your cities nigs

Oh okay, i was just looking at them both and i didnt really know what the best option to play was but considering OpenTTD is farther along ill play that

The base game is kinda bland, however, so you best be looking into mods as soon as you learned the ropes.

Will do

Are there any city builders that allow you to start with stone age and evolve to modern day?
Because I want that.

I want to start with Banished-style plopping and building and assigning with huts and move up to Sim City style zoning and controlling and trafficing with skyscrapers.

Reported for kike shill.

Oh, is it? Thanks; I couldn’t tell.
