Sneak up behind people like McReeee does, or get a friend to play Rein and use his ult to stun people. That last one also works really well with d.va's ult.

Don't go balls deep unless you've perfected your Concussion Blast skirting, abuse cover to throw zero fall-off rockets as well as the decent splash range, and learn to predict. A lot of people are retards and either :

A) Skirt back and forth in a VERY small area until they are attacked at which point they panic and run away while jumping
B) Never skirt around and simply run in a singular direction until they hit a wall before running in the opposite direction.

Also learn where the health packs are and how to effectively rocket jump, the boost is more important than 40-120 health when you're trying to get back to the frontline quickly, especially if you got a healer topping you off between blasts as well. Just the same start spamming space instead of holding it down, you're going to get a lot more of your jetpack that way. Ult wise, just try to flank with it and never expect to survive. Also don't be a fucking cocksucker and wait for your BIG OL' POTG OH BOY moment, just fucking take out their solo Zarya / Zenyatta / Mercy / McCree / Soldier / Ana / Junkrat / Bastion out with it and call it a day.

And if you try and shoot through the gate instead of fucking going high in the air when attacking the first point on Hanamura as Pharah to take out an un-shielded Bastion I will find where you leave and stick a severed dog foot down your urethra.

The thing about Phara is that most people who try her out start out playing her like the Soldier from TF2. One big diference though, the Soldier is a lot more durable. 200 HP in overwatch means you're made of toilet paper, reinforced with cardboard as oposed to Zennyatta that is 100% wet toilet paper and no cardboard at all.

That means you can't just faceroll people and attack from the front. Every attack character has a diferent point of entry:
Entering from this positions lets you play with each characters strengths. For instance, S76 can heal and makes for a good frontal assault, same as tracer since she can blink out when they focus fire her.
McCree is respectable at mid-range, so he can enter from the front, yes. But if you take a side route you get to approach them, stun them and get a few shots before they even react. With some luck you even find a genji.

Phara needs to stay above the other team at all times. If you drop down to their level, you're doomed 90% of the time. Same goes for the ulti: if they see you in the air, they'll focus you since you have no cover to go back to. Strike from above, and better yet: from their sides/back.
They'll take more time to focus you, and one second might make the diference between a 4-kill and a "JUST".

Burst damage is always squishy so you can punish them for overextending.

He has 200 HP now and has been so for a long while. 150 of it are shields. It's pretty neat that he basically self heals like Mercy very well and his shield is upgraded with Torb.

You got them both mixed, I see. McCree has decent falloff that he can engage from the front as long as he keeps his distance. Going from the sides is a gamble since there's a sweetspot where people will die 90% of the time with FtH and your grenade but hitting that sweetspot isn't easy and you're voiding your range advantage to use it.

If a scout carries a Sandman and turns a corner at the wrong time, a soldier can pretty much kill him with one hit. For other races (or at medium range) he does it in two hits.

Any of you fags ever run into this "Failed to connect to server." issue? One of the people on my premade team claims its kicking him mid comp match and sometimes during a quick play.

Any attempt to reconnect is apparently giving him the same message even though we can see his icon in the party still.

The only time I've ever gotten a message saying "Failed to connect to server" is a couple times when I tried to start up the game and for whatever reason it wouldn't connect, closing and restarting always solved that right away. I do somewhat often get disconnected from games before they start by it taking it a super long time to load and then getting removed from the server for inactivity without ever loading in, but that doesn't give any message about failing to connect.

I got Gold from placements with 3/7. It's like 80-90% about your personal performance score.

At least plat is above average. If you aren't good enough to carry and you don't have a group it can take quite a while to get into diamond. took me 198 games. Then I got a win streak which put me just over 100 points from masters so I've been floating at 3300-3400 ever since.

But at six promotions you should not be stuck at fucking platinum. I'm at platinum at one promotion. Most people in platinum are one promotion or below.

Well, are you earning more points from a win than you are losing in a loss? Specifically non-streak, meaning a win right after a loss compared to a loss right after a win, streak bonuses are huge.

If you gain more than you lose than the personal skill system thinks you should be at a higher rank. If you lose more than you gain you need to git gud first.

Hell, I usually get like 20 or less points on single wins compared to 25+ substractions for each loss, not counting streaks.

Yeah matchmaking is a bitch. Funnily enough I've found that the high levels of Diamond are actually worse overall then platinum. At 3300-3400 I'm regularly placed in matches with people running all the way from platinum to grandmasters. When I was in platinum that kind of fucked up matchmaking was far rarer.

I main support too, Mercy to be specific. I'm completely at the mercy (no pun intended) of bad random DPS.

More like 8-2 since I was 7-3 and ended up just two games short of plat.

The majority of your rank in placements is determined by your personal performance. If you are skilled enough as defined by the system, you could end up in plat with only two or three wins total. If you are shitty enough you could still end up in gold or worse with only a couple of losses.

at a 5-5 record you are pretty much going to be exactly where your performance score puts you, which could go either way. If you are a little good you'll be plat, a little bad you'll be gold. Win more than 5 and even if you are a little bad you might be pushed up to plat, but if you are really shit you might still end up in silver in spite of the wins.

Also, for reference, you CAN place into diamond. No you do not need a perfect 10-0 record. I do not know if you can place Masters but I wouldn't doubt it.

Then you also need to account for the fact that personal performance has nothing to do with medals and some characters get fucked over (like Mercy) when getting placed.

Considering how inconsistent it has been for me I could have gotten to low gold in placements but got 3-3-4 (W-L-D) and got to high silver.

I think there's more involved. I got more wins than loses and placed in the 2300's

I'm a Mercy main myself actually. She doesn't get fucked that badly, most people just don't use her as well as they think they do. Her personal performance metric is scored based on offensive and defensive assists, which measure how well you are directly helping your team get kills.

Where she gets fucked is the fact she can't really do anything by herself, even scoring assists requires at least one other player on the team who can kill things.

It decreases the already low chance of you being in a romantic relationship with a woman.

And the problem is that how to play her correctly (not sticking to one person) does not award you with these assists.

Actually if you continually swap targets, healing or boosting whoever is most in-need at the time, you get usually many more assists than if you stick to one person. The only thing that really costs you is when you hide for a res.

Well considering I've been thrown back into gold after reaching plat pretty easy as long as I had a +1 we probably get very different games.

I started in gold, hit plat in 3 games after placing, fell back to gold 18 games later on a loss streak that took me down to 2307, made my way back to 2600 with a PUG, then pretty much soloed my way to 3400 over the course of almost 200 more games. It's been a constant back and forth struggle, but the one thing that remained consistent is that, unless I was on a loss streak, as long as I played Mercy I always gained more than I lost.

I only started recording the more detailed information in this spreadsheet yesterday (before I was only writing down rank numbers), but you are welcome to have a look at it. I'll be updating as I play.

Forgot to mention, my rank changes have been much closer together and more random in Diamond. The reason for this is probably a combination of the very spread out player pool and my performance score being more in line with my current rank.

I seem to gain and lose the same amount, but I'm playing Reinhardt a lot since nobody ever picks that guy and he seems to be one of the most stable and efficient picks. I can play other characters well too though, but we always seem to just get run over if I don't.

Great game as Mercy. I took to heart what someone said about her offensive assists having the biggest impact on score, so I damageboost whoever looks like he's killing someone. Manages to get 31 offensive and 32 defensive assists with 14k healing.
Fucking jumped to 3005 with that match. Muh dick.

I'm at 2002 and scared to play another comp game. I've lost every single game since my last placement match due to shit teams, and I rather not get dumped into silver.

You don't use it to wipe. you use it to kill people coming form spawn. After your team gets healer/squishy picks, you fly to their spawn and wait for them to exit. Ult them, then fly back to your team. Rinse and repeat. You prevented their team from grouping, and from getting support ults.
Mean while the rest of your team plays tanks and supports to have Rein/Roadhog get nano boosted and murder the rest.

Had it drop my connection to battlenet last night 5 seconds before the round started. I quickly logged back in and then tried the rejoin match option. Fkn thing told me i couldn't join server because i wasn't the leader. Then the game closed because i left before it started. My 4 man got hit with a loss and we couldn't queue for 10 minutes. I was raging.

Back to 1911 after a losing streak of 4 games, matchmaking still gives me a harder time when I team up with friends, my new high at least got better but still, SR2000 seems so far away.

So maybe I'm just bad at data analysis, but so far I'm seeing no correlation between my rank changes and ANYTHING (filtering for just Mercy games, lucio seems obviously worse but the sample size is also too small). Maybe someone else could dig into this for me?

The fact that there is some performance based metric is a given, otherwise people wouldn't be placing 500 ranks apart from each other when they play the same games together. It's also the only explanation for why different characters can consistently get different rank changes.

At this point I'm wondering if the rank change might be aggregating performance over several games at a time, therefor obfuscating the impact on any single change, especially if you perform relatively consistently over time.

Mercy players, what the hell do I do with her ult?

wat do? What determines a good res vs. a bad res, and with the fast rate that Mercy's ult regenerates, is it wrong to use them when only 1-2 teammates die?

2 is usually good if the rest of the team is alive. What you don't want to do is end up with fewer people alive in the area after res than there are enemies. Usually in that case not only are you wasting the res, but you are also feeding enemy ult and setting your team further back in spawns.

Of course there are exceptions to every rule. Even a solo res can be good if it's the right person at the right time, and resing 2v6 can still help stall if that's what you are going for. Naturally most of the skill that comes with her ult is knowing when to use it exactly.

One example of a good solo res is if you're pushing the enemy back hard and want to keep the pressure up on them after someone important like Reinhardt dies. I usually wouldn't solo res, though.

I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong. An Hog on defense should have an advantage on an Hog on attack, since his team should be spread out and mine should be grouped nearby.

Unless you're patrolling side routes for flankers alone you're either out of position, hence why your team isn't nearby or your team is made up of shitters who are themselves all out of position.

You could have gotten at most one kill, because it doesn't take more than one hook cooldown either way. So one for one and the others a maybe.

Funny thing. Every time I get hooked in a Roadhog vs Roadhog fight, I always win the fight unless I get hooked into an improvised firing squad. Why is this? I don't bother hooking him back and especially don't try to heal since Roadhog out damages the heal.

The idiots that hook you probably don't even hit the face. Its not always equally easy since placement after hook is a bit wonky, but winning a fight like that is easy as long as you shoot the other in the face.

3v6 is probably the worst thing you can do to your team, worse than not resing at all.

However, if there are still some allies alive or some enemies dead it can be a good res. Also, try to survive your ressing. Remember that res now instantly resets the cooldown on GA, so you can fly in, res, and fly out without ever stopping if you line up an escape route beforehand.

It will block any single attack that goes over the 200 limit. I would guess there's a small window of time while the shield is collapsing that it continues to absorb damage (over the limit), otherwise shotgun projectiles would get through.

More like he hooks you on sight, because that's what they all do. They hook the first thing they can aim at whenever it comes off CD. My advice is to be the smarter roadhog, when you see an enemy roadhog shoot him, and when his hook grabs (probably in-flight along with your scrap ball) you you'll be in an advantageous position instead.

Three times I can remember it popped up:
Besides the massive ammount of butthurt you can cause with the steel trap on the first chokepoint, Volskay has so many places a Junkrat can hide and spam, or fly with the sticky and be damn effective because there's no shortage of walls for Grenades to ricochet.

Hollywod is kinda the same, but it's kind of a gamble in the middle when they're pushing the payload. You can trap that bar in the middle, but if they ignore it, you lose some advantage. You can also nest on the rooftops, but any competent team will have someone flying up there, and on an open space like that? You're gonna get sniped.
The whole map looks like it was designed for junkrat. So many routes for the Riptire to pop out of, so many jumps to ledges, so many corners and closed spaces.

I believe Junkrat is one of those characters that is ALWAYS usefull. Not 100% usefull mind you, sometimes, yeah, another Hero would be doing a better job. But he still does fine, and I have my highest winrat with him.

I love Junkrat, but I share your hate for spamrats. Everytime someone picks him before me, I take special care to berate him when he simply spams shit.

Tracer is the epitome of bad design, other heroes have their strengths but you can always poke a hole in them and find some effective counter.

No other character gets a free retry if they fuck up, they have to disengage and find a health pack or a healer.

Tracer can literally undo damage and stay in the fight over and over again. When she's finally caught out she just teleports away anyway.

See, there's three major points to playing Junkrat efectively and dishing out more damage than a bastion.

First, where do you place your grenades?
Going for direct hits is great (trap works best) but direct hits are something you shouldn't rely on.
You'll often see rats spamming over walls, into windows and generaly into places they have no line of sight hoping to catch one. Ever been on the other side of this situation? You see the first nade, then avoid it, while the dumb moron drops another 4 after it. Then you appear from the side and the dumbfuck is reloading.
Nades are for chokepoints (that's why Junkrat is a defensive character) and closed spaces.
Volskay industries is the best example.
You're defending. Get up to that first chockepoint.
Now, you can spam your nades down to the sides and hit jackshit. You can also spam them over that gap in the wall and pray to Australian Jesus that someone is on the other side and his keyboard malfunctions.
Or… you can aim at the wall behind them. Especially if it ricochets back to the wall you're using for cover and stays there. Then you have to think fast and pick the best side. 2 fast moving dumbfucks on one side and 3 slow Heroes on the other? Aim for the 3. Reinhardt got a shield? Aim above his shield, nades will hit the wall and hit him in the back.

The second thing is positioning. This includes using the traps and the sticky to launch yourself. Leaving a trap to catch someone off-guard is funny, but useless 90% of the time. They're launched flying and you can't hit such a fast moving target.
Keep stickies for close-range quick blasts (about the only thing that's gonna save you from a reaper) and above all, disregard the "you gotta stay above" tip. You're deadmeat up there. Snipers/phara eat you like your made of Cheerios.
You need a place that has good cover from the air, let's you pick, and if your team mates drop dead with enemies charging your position, you need a close-by ledge or place to jump to.
By now you surely picked up the best position for a junkrat: flank routes.
He's great at taking out flankers with his trap and explosive, and from the sides he can still area-deny the mainroute. Junkrats who spam the main route often wonder why did their team die to a couple flankers. It's because you didn't do your job.
Again, Junkrat is a defensive character: anti-flank.

Finnaly, the most important: LEARN TO SOAR THE SKIES LIKE A GRACEFULL WINGED CRAZED AUSSIE MOTHERFUCKER.
On some maps, you have no cover, or your enemies deny you that cover. Or you're on attack.
Learn to stay mobile, to stay in the air. You gotta get up there, punch Phara down and tell her "Aerial Superiority Blown Up".
Flying as Junkrat let's you:
If you can't take out at least 2 guys like that, you aren't FLYING GOOD ENOUGH. And remember that after flying from one spot to another, shitting all this crap on them, you'll land somewhere safe, hide (heal for some stray shot) and be ready to repeat.

Final note: learn to play Nasheeds and sacrifice yourself. Fly like I just mentioned. But if you notice your team died, you alone won't do much (unless you have a Tire). Jump, fly and land on their middle. If there's large heroes, shoot them directly (missing at that distance means you should git gud) but if there's smaller characters, shoot the walls nearby. Cover the whole place. You're gonna die, and use the explosives for a final laugh.
I've stopped a few payloads like this.

On the highlight it shows the incorrect score, but with my team winning 1 - 0.

On the POTM at the end of the game (which I recorded manually) it shows the incorrect score but with my team losing 0 - 1.

But by time that was made, we were already on the second point. If my team hadn't capped the first point, then the other team capping it would have been game over.

When playing Reinhardt and keeping your barrier up, don't strafe around too much. Your barrier is nearly impossible to miss and works based off sheer health. So trying to strafe spam to make yourself a harder target or whatever is entirely a waste. You actually didn't do it too much, pretty much only for a few seconds that I saw. I'm just pointing it out for anyone else who plays Reinhardt.

It's especially important to stand still if you have an Ana shooting through your barrier because she can't shoot through your enormous body.

I was talking about your firestrikes getting absorbed by the zarya. If she uses both shields it's an instant 100% charge and you don't really get anything out of it. Sure she died that game, but what if she hadn't? You weren't breaking those strategically (or at all), just feeding.

Yeah thought so. The one at the bridge was pretty bad, one of the shields actually went down before it hit (thus you can hear the "hit noise) so I was kinda like phew. And when you have Rein ult you need Zarya shields down so you can knock her down too or she'll just save another person.

If the Zarya stay alive for a push or does anything of note I wait for shields to go down though. I have played lots of her so I know how dangerous she can be in the right hands.

Look at it this way, they are playing reaper instead of Genji or Soldier or Tracer which means we have actual fucking burst damage to take somebody out instead of dinkly poke. I cannot tell you the amount of games I lost simply because we couldn't kill somebody fast enough due to the fact most of our damage was trickled in and half of the shots were missed, meaning the enemy Mercy could outheal a lot of our DPS if the Reinhardt / Zarya didn't go in properly and, chances are, they didn't because most of them are shitters.

They exist. Rare as fuck but I've seen them played by somebody else than me. Honestly he is not as bad as most people make him out to be, he has quite a decent amount of uses especially on KOTH maps where the enemy is usually spread apart enough that you can jump onto their supports / squishies AND have a shitload of room to maneuver. Not always a good idea since people don't aim for Rein they aim in his shields direction and it could kill off a team member. It happens and it can completely stop a push if it was a critical member and a whole 2 seconds can mean a lot of people dead.
Legitimate complaint if you're on defense (although Hanamura first point it can be ok to charge into the house wall if your team is doing exceptionally well). On offense if your team refuses to flank then sometimes you actually have to just charge the enemy team's shit (at least in 2400) in order to break up their defense. It pushes the enemy back (they have to deal with you on their point) giving your team some breathing room to push. Its risky but is often worth it. Really, sometimes the only way to get your team to push is to completely obliterate the enemy front lines and force them to deal with you in a new place. I have seen other Reinhardts do what you mean and I know they're not doing it for this purpose as well, but there are reasons to do it. Especially if your own team only knows how to attack the nearest target. Enemy team has to send several people to deal with you, meaning those people can no longer hold the choke. You need to take note of how many enemies follow you when you do it to determine if it was a good idea and make sure your team was alive before you do it.

Though its only something to do if you can see that you will lose if you don't. Enemy team almost capped the last point and my team was a bunch of cowards here so I needed to do it and hope they moved forward.

Roadhog builds a disgusting amount of ult by healing himself (25%ish for the full ability). So really the healers should top everyone else off first. If Roadhog does have ult he has no excuse.

Reason why I gave the special circumstances addendum. For instance, Junkrat spamming nades down the alleyway after the first point and Reinhardt being far enough in front he can drop the shield to absorb the damage to boost Zarya AND his supports before putting the shield back up.

I'd call Hanamura one of the worst maps to charge in unless the enemy team already lost four members. The best one to do the charge on while being on the defense is the first point on Temple of Anubis if you actually have a few people watching the popular room / chokepoint. Allies push them out, you charge in front behind, more than likely get a pin on the enemy Reinhardt / Support that was lagging behind and you got the enemy encircled. Also the main issue with taking that much initiative as Reinhardt like you showed in your video is that the pubs don't understand shit of what's going on. They literally sat back while you distracted 4 of them for about 12 seconds and were unable to clear out the Junkrat and Reaper that stood behind at the choke. When they finally go in, you're dead and the others are already in position. I mean don't get me wrong, I understand where you're coming from, but as far as that video is concerned it didn't accomplish much but build ult charges for 'em since pubs are retards.

Fuck his ult. I love the pig and his shit but that Mercy and / or Ana ult is much more valuable, not to mention Ana specifically does so much HPS using his own self-heal leaves Roadhog in a worse situation than he began in due to the several seconds of being forced to do nothing.

When it comes to Roadhog, he should be giving the healers priority on any damage he takes, only using his E if he needs it to stay alive or the healers already have ult. Roadhog's ult can be massive but all support ults are more valuable.

Exactly. Nine times out of ten, Rez, Nano-Boost, and Transcendence are going to help win a fight more than Whole Hog does. The only time I'd argue your self-heal takes priority over the support heals is when you're getting your shit pushed in consistently as Whole Hog can revert the state of the field into a more favorable position for you to hold down in.

I ended up having to tell a hog to heal himself because we just won a team fight and he was smart enough to feed me ult. But I already had a boost ready so it would've been better for him to gain the charge himself.

Honestly at that point I would of just switched out to Winston since it could accomplish your goal much easier and actually give the team a fighting chance to clear out the Junkrat sitting on that stupid fucking ledge. Move around afterwards, see if you can get their mercy, drop a barrier to bait Roadhog closer, then change back to Reinhardt once you got the payload capped.

Needs a better first choke. Otherwise its a good map.

It at needs more flanking options. Tracer, one of the best flankers in the game, has no flanking options around the choke. She has to go straight through it and into one of the sides. I'm not sure if Genji can jump over the ruined building. If he can't then that pretty much only leaves D.Va and Pharah who can go over the building and around cliffs.

Genji and Tracer can - technically speaking - flank through the right but it's rather risky. Where the land ends you can Blink / Double-Jump over the ledge and end up on the other side but it leaves you exposed as fuck.

Eichenwald is basically Useless Flank Routes : The Map as far as I'm concerned.

Its really just the first choke thats completely terrible as you point out. I guess I don't play flankers enough? I think its more fun than Hollywood at least.

Genji is like 2 inches short of being able to properly cross it it seems. Still trying because I'm genuinely curious. If he still had Triple Jump he could easily cross it.

I mean, probably but I don't have anybody to test it out with at the moment. I doubt wasting the boost on it would be worth it, I put it in the same vein of "You can cross it by using your ult."

Just the 30% passive boost should be enough to go 2 inches?

Well on the bright side, the servers shitting themselves gave me a free win. We were in the last push on attack and everyone started getting crazy lag so the defense couldn't actually get to the cart to stop us. If it had happened 30 seconds sooner it would have been a DC. This was on Eichenwalde of all places.

An actual fucking counter for Mei.

Mei has tons of counters, at least in terms of being able to 1v1 her. The problem is her invulnerability stalling and maybe the icewall has too much HP to deal with in a timely manner.

The ice wall I think is fine but I don't think she or Reaper should be able to contest objectives while invincible.

The freeze shouldn't last an eternity.

Her heal shouldn't accelerate her ultimate' recharge.

She should have less ammo.

Anything that doesn't make her fucking impossible to kill.
