Most of the old classics people tend to hype about, Fallout 1 and 2, Arcanum, Planetscape: Tournament, Might & Magic, Witcher have pretty shitty gameplay slapped onto interesting lore and story. If you removed all storytelling elements you wouldn't find much to hold your interest in.

I first played Divinity 2 and hated it because I was in my "oblivion is goty" phase. I played Dragon Commander and it was a neat unique little RTS, if a bit unfinished and unpolished. Haven't played Original Sin, and probably never will because of my bad experience win divinity 2.

Most of the games are pretty standalone. Dragon commander is a weird RTS like hybrid that has shit gameplay but people like it for the politics and waifus in it. Original sin is more of a turn based RPG that i've heard pretty good things about. Divinity 2 can be pretty alright but it's more of a third person action RPG than OS.

I thought Divinity 2 was one of those overly ambitious shoot the moon projects where they wanted to make you unite the races against the one asshole. Basically, what Dragon Commander came close to being.

The crunch and broken dreams feeling that the team likely had does bleed over into the game, with the elves dead, that ending before flames of vengeance came out, and the way everything you do is largely presented as inconsequential.

This is due to classical media in both departments, if I were to guess.
Though, I'm not really sure about either. Lizards that I've seen in fantasy seem to be more of the tribalish sorts. Though, the having same level of tech bit is correct.

Did anyone else have serious misgivings about the first few hours of Divinity Original Sin?

The first time I tried it, I couldn't stand it, and dropped it. That was back at release. Two weeks ago on a whim I tried again, and I still didn't like it for a good, long time. Once I had finally cleared half the area surrounding Cyseal and managed to accomplish a few things in town, then I settled in and started enjoying it, and a few hours after that I was much more adept at knowing what i was going to do and how to accomplish it as things developed in battle.

My main problems with the start of the game were
>couldn't really push on with the main quest because didn't have lockpicking or pickpocket high enough, too low level to do any real damage to doors outside of sitting there for 20 minutes spamming attacks at one i discovered hours later on my own that alt allowed you to view things on the ground, making it much easier to find keys

Now I'm level 12 and I've been coasting along for a good long time, and I'm truly enjoying the lore and the gameplay, especially how widely varying combat can be and how ridiculously many options you have. I'm glad I stuck through the beginning, but I was seriously gritting my teeth in irritation for several hours trying to figure out why it felt like the game was forcing me to perform a handful of specific tasks.

I didn't hit the wall quite as strongly but I had similar feelings. The game really picks up once you get out of Cyseal but you get stuck in there for far too long. It also doesn't help that the murder mystery plot isn't particularly compelling and can be a little obtuse depending on how you solve it.

A player's introduction to the game shouldn't be a puzzle they're trapped in. If they don't figure it out initially then they're stuck banging their head against the wall, and they may not know enough about the setting itself at that early point to really understand the right questions to ask to solve the problem. I did enjoy D:OS, but yeah, it certainly had issues.

Oddly enough, I had the opposite issue. I thought it was better in Cyseal when there was a lot of stuff to do, and once you left and it became more combat focused I lost a lot of interest. The issues mentioned are there, and I remember getting stuck at one point because there was one flag I never got despite already knowing the information that I needed.

The other part was that I just didn't care about the main story, so a more side quest heavy region was more interesting to me.

Early Access, because paid for it in the Kikestarter. Still terribly unfinished, but it's going in the right direction. As long as the writers don't fuck up by dabbling into mediocrity or ideological soapboxing and they actually manage to built good amount of solid content on the systems and aesthetics they have set up, it might well be one of the better rpgs out there. I have a hunch that the game will still feel unfinished at release, but Larian has previously done some amazing post-release work on most of their games.
