I think at this point video games are approaching being as mainstream as movies or music. I don't think they're quite there yet, but it's getting pretty close. It'll happen too.

The good news is that the niches that represent what video games were in the nineties and every point going forward more or less still exist and along with many other new niches are still the domain of "nerds." That time in video games that "we" owned is still there. There's just a layer of mainstream commercially centered stuff on top of it. Just like how there are super hero and Adam Sandler movies. People who are into movies as a medium and take them seriously don't like those types of films the same way plenty of people don't like your Call of Duties, Maddens, Assassin's Creeds, and whatever else. Although some of those didn't start that way. Which is why citing video games as a hobby doesn't mean anything by itself anymore. People are just slow to catch onto that for whatever reason.

Point is you have to get past the umbrella term of "video games" if you want to find that hobby that is still niche and you can feel ownership over. Video games are probably not going to take a huge step backwards and suddenly not be mainstream at this point.

CSGO is shit because the entire game meta is memorizing recoil patterns. Doing that can put you high in the ladder without any other form or skill or strategy.
Overwatch is shit because all the powers charge up automatically, meaning you can use them after waiting a few seconds and you don't have to scramble to supply any form of mana. Don't even get me started on how you have to rely on the god awful matchmaking to put you with decent players to win, regardless of your skill.
League is shit because you only have to buy specific items, and be MODERATELY GOOD at micro. I've held my ground against absolute savants at the game by simply moving backwards when I know when they strike. The whole idea around the game is to buy the right shit and spam the fucking ability keys and let the champ do all the work for you. I don't know how you can say esport autism HASN'T bred poor game design because it's fucking everywhere and can be quantified by stream view count and how easily a newcomer can kick someone's shit in due to basics tips and practicing bullshit skills.

Art does not tend to have rules unless your talking about sub-genres of art and that's more about classification. So, the whole idea of something being "disqualified" as art doesn't make sense in terms of the modern understanding of it.

I agree with you though. Having DLC and micro-transactions would certainly call into the question the legitimacy of something trying to be artistic. But, art isn't a binary thing where things are or aren't. In that case it would be bad art before it becomes unable to be considered art.

There's nothing wrong with general guidelines to getting better at a game like with many underrated aspects of CSGO but when a game's meta is all about a single retarded skill, or has crazy abilities that recharge with no effort, or games that explicitly allow you to look up builds that can rape everyone in a match by simply buying a few items and spamming keys, it is shit. It requires little to no experience, or experience in the most barebones idea of muscle memory. I encourage retards to look up guides, but when those guides are outright cheat sheets that require no skill to implement, then the game is trash.
