Isn't that what VR is trying to do… again. Every medium just seems over-saturated with junk because we got more ways to deliver that junk quickly to a wide audience on any platform. Then you've got the blockbuster effect that relies on big and safe ideas to stay afloat. In theory that money should be trickling into more risky and new ideas but that doesn't seem to be the case. DLC seems to be the replacement for that instead so we have to rely on indies.

I think people are overestimating the growth of the demographics, not helped by those falsifying and skewing the data for their own benefits. How can an industry grow if it doesn't learn from the past, listen to their customers and innovate for the future? It just stays alive on stagnation until people gradually accept that as the way it has always been.

I think it's best for those tired of this drought of ideas to look back to the past. The backlog of games, movies, books and anything interesting you've left behind and enjoy them now.

The more drastic alternative would be to take up the reins yourself and be that innovator. The world could use more passionate people in these husks of mediums that people consume. Don't jump in blindly. Be smart about it and be prepared to gamble that even your efforts might not be enough. If you can't be an innovator, find innovators to support and push them forward in their endeavors.

I feel like the Japs are the only ones that still have some lingering level of talent from the old days. Fox Engine took forever to develop but it seriously paid off when they finally did something with it. Souls games aren't super technically impressive but their overall gameplay/design feels just about right with what you'd expect from a proper video game.
