What do you think is next for "Video Games" ? When did the social shift go from playing video games, to watching people play video games. I know the 2007 year is what most people jump too, but when did it become so popular?

Youtube and Twitch have not replaced video games for people, it just replaced watching tv because tv sucks.These people are mad because kids today are growing up with different things that they grew up with.

Well if people are watching video games be played, then surely someone is playing video games somewhere.

Maybe the next frontier is video games that play themselves while recording themselves then automatically uploading?

2007 isn't when people shifted to watching games. That was 2011. In 2007 more idiots gained easy access to the internet so the environment where that'd be possible was made.
But it all started in 2010. The year when the "Gameplay Commentary" formula took off and then in 2011 the term "Let's Play" was created and popularized because it was shorter and easy to market than "Gameplay Commentary"
Then shit like Pewdiepie and Game Grumps happened and it dawned on everyone that this was here to stay and we were just gonna have to deal with that fact. At least YouTube's algorithms make it harder for random lps to shit up search feeds and recommendations.

We become the videogames, while computer AI's watch and control us.

'Let's play' threads where someone would post hundreds of screenshots were around long before 2007, that started off the trend of people streaming their games.

First time I saw an online stream of live gameplay was around 2005. Back then it was as easy as opening a playlist in winamp and selecting a shoutcastcast video stream. Most of what was on offer were 9/11 truth documentaries, this was before youtube or google video were around.

They'd interact with viewers through IRC and at the time it was revolutionary. To a shut-in it was the perfect replacement for human interaction.

The very first let's play was a japanese player playing Resident Evil 2 and talking during the footage.

I can't remember the exact year but it's the first documented case.

For prerecorded video with commentary maybe but on some quake forum the first 'let's play' were done to show off mods. That's where the name was born.

Thinking back a playthrough of RE2 as piece of tofu was pretty popular during the early 2000's. Do you know how he shared his video back then? Through torrents or a p2p network like WinMX?

Some years ago Arkane/Valve tried to make a FPS (cancelled) call the The Crossing that had "crossplayer" (what happens when you combine singleplayer and multiplayer into one) basically all enemies in the game that would have been NPC's (in a normal game) were actually being controlled by human players.

We also saw a few years ago the popularity of Twitch Plays Pokemon.

Now cross those two ideas together, and those watching you play could also be controlling/guiding your in game enemies.
