One of those "see it for myself things". It's pirateable and I figured I might as well. I mean, it was kind of neat for about 5 minutes before I had to roll a wisdom saving roll to not fall asleep.

speaking of seeing things for yourself that reminds me of something, I pirated Duke Nukem Forever the other day just to spite Randy Burchford and to finally see for myself just how far the second most iconic classic FPS franchise has fallen, and one thing that stood out to me (before I uninstalled it in utter disgust) was the one-button executions that can be performed when an enemy is near death and frozen in a stationary stun-lock. I kept trying to remember where I'd seen that gameplay mechanic recently and then it hit me, fucking nudoom.

Nudoom literally draws more gameplaywise from Duke Nukem Forever, one of the worst reviewed AAA releases of the last 5 years, than its own namesake.

There's plenty of the latter around (especially since HDoom), but with the former, you'll probably be disappointed. The art tends to be either really fucking awful, or well drawn but with really exaggerated proportions.

Tearing down enemies with glory kills can only be fun when you have a chain of enemies to line up, except none of the weapons either overkill or are completely shit to set up these glory kills. Even then, your camera is so focused on punching/kicking/grappling these enemies, it's kind of hard to know what's going on around you, the enemies still move in realtime and also animation reset every enemy, so these glory kills are 50/50 whether or not it's actually safe to go in, yeah you get an odd 5 hp, but when you're playing on nightmare, that's +5hp vs -50hp.

executions refill health to max and make the enemy drop their weapon, practically identical in concept to monster pinatas
never more than a few enemies spawned in at once so console babbies don't get overwhelmed
upgradeable health/armor
unskippable cutscenes/plot sections that grind action to a halt
linear as fuck corridor level design for that cinematic experience
corridors are punctuated with monster arenas where you have to kill a few waves of enemies (but never more than 3 or 4 at a time) to unlock the exit
memes and more memes, shit writing that tries way too hard to be current and edgy
first person platforming sections everywhere, because current year
boring, bland, paint-by-numbers damage sponge bosses

Edward is a fucking retard (he coded Zdoom's netcode, which is a steaming pile of peer-to-peer shit) but Retro Doom is a broken copycat of Chocolate Doom, hell and it's an older and modified version of CD so it lacks compatibility with doom2.exe demos and has some performance issues.

What really makes it shine as a shitty port is that the creator constantly attempts to get donations for doing a fork of another project, his homepage has the DONATE ME PLS button right at the top, to lure in retards with the brand name "retro" to scam them out of money for an otherwise free engine.

I had the same problem. Intro and menus at 5 [/spoiler]spf[/spoiler], gameplay at like 5 fps. Just updated my graphics drivers, problem solved.


I feel you. Just tried nuDoom for the first time today.

My expectations weren't high, I already knew it played more like Painkiller than Doom, but I really didn't expect it to be such a pile of turd. Glad I waited to pirate it, wasn't even worth the time and disk space for 60 GB.

My main problem is that, like in many modern fps, your character doesn't have any feeling of weight or momentum in his movement, you feel like a camera floating and sliding through the map. Gunplay is terrible too, guns also don't seem to have any weight or impact.

People gloat that the game is super optimized, well what a fucking surprise, it is "optimized" because the graphics are shit, consolized shit. Geometry seems very simple and low poly, it only looks good because the devs put tons of filters and effects on top as makeup. The graphics are exactly analogue to an ugly woman with tons of makeup. I really don't understand how this shit can be 60 GB, even 20 GB would have been too much. Around 14 GB at most would have been acceptable.

Enemy designs also have nothing to do with Doom, all of them look like they were ripped straight out of Gears of War.

'works perfectly fine' wasn't intended to mean 'works 100% identically to vanilla Doom', if you want something that's 100% true to vanilla then build a DOS/Win98 rig and use the vanilla exe or settle for DOSBox you fucking sperg. About the status bar screen size thing, I think you do have a point there, I recall some fuckery with the aspect ratio and going into fullscreen but it's been years since I actually used the port, no idea if he ever fixed that.

Most of your complaints seem to stem from being assblasted that the guy named it Retro without setting out to recreate what already exists in Chocolate Doom, rather than Retro just being the word the guy chose for his pet project that obviously isn't aiming for 100% authenticity but is still more decidedly more 'retro' than ZDoom or Doomsday. Most of what Doom Retro does (that isn't stupid or weird, at least) could & has been either done as mods, or are engine features that:
A) Aren't enabled by default.
B) Better implemented.
C) Can be changed without exiting the game.

If I had to name things from Doom Retro that I'd like to see something like GZDoom do, it'd be the shadows, and… well, that's it. Faking shadows with black dynamic lights was dumb and ugly. However, the new rollsprite stuff in GZDoom means we'll be able to do shadows anyway.

GZDoom Builder is what I use. Despite the name, it can do vanilla/Boom content no problem if you don't want to make anything ZDoom/GZDoom related.

For maps? DoomBuilder 2 or GZDoomBuilder, a fork intended to, as it's name would imply, cover GZDoom's additions.
For mods? SLADE3.

Up to this day, they're salty that their shortly lived fad mods don't rack up 1/100th of Brutal Doom's popularity.

3DGE actually tried to bring 3D objects to doom like models and voxels. Same with Risen3D.

Legacy and ReMooD tried to bring OGL and split-screen co-op to the port scene before GZDoom was a thing, with the latter being a more stable version/successor of Legacy that can also run on linux.

Odamex is a multiplayer port that tries to be Zdaemon (aka as close to vanilla) without the login bullshit, still in development.

Zandronum is Skulltag's successor, since Skulltag died and because there needs to be an alternative to ZDoom's SHITTY ASS P2P NETWORKING for multiplayer modding.

Eternity is the one that's truly redundant since zdoom exists but the rest of the ports you listed actually do have reasons to exist, unlike Doom Retro which is attempting to be a competitor to Chocolate Doom without any merit or advantages over that.

oh, did I miss Chocolate adding 360 gamepad support with force feedback? I know it won't be considered a merit for all the mouse+kb elitists but some people appreciate an option to play from the couch without dragging over their keyboard and balancing it on their lap while they mouse on the couch, and classic vanilla Doom gameplay is heavily reliant upon autoaim (obviously so for aiming up and down) so it's not like you seriously handicap yourself in singleplayer by not having mouselook, it's not some modern tactical squad based shooter where razor accuracy is critical, on the contrary vanilla gameplay is very arcadey. Of course BFG edition with its PRBoom-based Doom1+2 ports also supports XInput pads (without the force feedback), if you don't mind having censored WADs.

BFG edition wads are shit and they (as in the wads themselves) also do not support XInput pads, but rather it's bundled sourceport does. Besides, prboom+, g/zdoom and zandronum can handle the 360 gamepad (what's the point of calling it force feedback? It's just vibration shake, even PS1 doom had this) plus a whole bunch of other controllers and arcade pads that are infinitely better than it so what was the point of Retro Doom already? That it's a shittier version of Chocolate doom that lacks half it's damn features and is riddled with bugs and shitty things like forced vsync?

Doom wasn't even designed for M/KB or Controller, but just plain KB only, and it plays fine just like that.

Keyword is SUPPORT. The level design, at least for the first episode in UV, was designed to be easy enough to beat with keyboard-only controls and the default controls reflect on this. Everyone and their mother knows Romero only played M/KB back then, but not everyone had mouses either and they had to set a bar low enough to catch in those who were transitioning from Wolfenstein to Doom.

stage 29 kinda had me sweating balls at times, but it went surprisingly well, on first try, although I came close to dying at few points

also used the original doom gameplay limits ofcourse, being able to vertically aim for example cheapens the experience if the wad itself is designed to be played with vanilla settings

John Carmack did nothing wrong, and Zenimax needs to stop making up wild stories. For a company who has allegedly been working in VR for two decades they have no papers, prototypes, proofs, patents or logs to show for it. That's either a fanciful tale of bullshit or one really awful software company who can't even keep logs of its own actions.

HDoom v7 was made when Zandronum was still on 1.2 and it was recently updated to work with 2.0 features, of which most servers haven't switched to 3.0 yet which is quite retarded. It is compatible with both Zan and ZDoom because of the backwards compatibility that ZDoom had. Mike has said that the mod was meant and designed for Zandronum, both for compatibility with ZDoom and for multiplayer shenanigans.

You might want to go back and check again. I played through PS1 Doom+Final Doom on an emulator about a year ago and neither one had vibration. Final Doom has support for the PS1 mouse (that is so inaccurate and frustrating you're actually better off with the digital pad), but no vibration. To the best of my knowledge both PS1 Doom+Final Doom predate the Dualshock.

I had a hacked PS1 with 2 normal controllers and a dualshock back then in 2002, and i'm fairly certain that Final Doom shaked the controller once you got hit. Not sure about Doom 1 however, since i din't have it for PS because i already had it on PC.

the emulator (mednafen) has working vibration in other games that support it, so I don't see why it wouldn't support it in these 2.

the 2 PS1 Dooms also do not support the analog sticks which is the other thing that typically comes along with vibration.

Yeah, i remember that Final Doom din't work with the analog sticks either. Reading a bit, i notice that FD was released two years before dualshock controllers were relesed, analog was released a year before that though so i don't know how it could even support vibration but not analog. Maybe it was an updated version of PS1 Final Doom? It wasn't exactly a non-pirated copy either so it could just be that.

I kinda prefered more the good 'ol stamina bar for the sword subweapons but this new timed reload system may actually balance weapons like the knives vs spear/axes vs torch. And, did you finally nerf the axes? They are ridiculeously good for a starting subweapon due to their damage+bounce capabilities.

Damn, The Plutonia Experiment goes from top-notch to braindead retarded at times. I like the downright cruelty of it, though, and without resorting to shit like boosting the enemies stats.

I think it's all good, except for the one level that's just invisible door triggers and archviles.

I always hated the first parts of Plutonia. Those early levels suck horsecock.

The second half has better architecture, but I'd still say maps like Aztec, Caged and Realm still hold up pretty well.

MSX changes monster AI? I haven't touched it in a long time. the BD AI is more aggressive than vanilla Doom.

Make sure to use the latest build of GZDoom as the latest version of D4D utilizes flat sprites which allows for shit like this.

Depends on what your definition of bullshit is.
I would personally recommend skillsaw's stuff and B2SX ep. 1 and 2. Though even skillsaw tends to get a bit too archvile-trap happy for me. B2SX Ep. 1 is probably my favorite megaWAD of all time, the level design is immaculate and it can get incredibly challenging at times but I never felt bullshitted on.

Oh and it also has a rad as fuck soundtrack.

Where are the good servers at? There's nothing but Brutal Doom, Endless Survival (with overpowered weapons, so it's not really "survival"), and WhoDunIt servers, and for the WhoDunIt ones, I can't even read the instructions when you enter the server. It just shows the DooM instructions and only flickers the mod's instructions.

It honestly wasn't that bad. It likely will never see a modding scene on par with the original titles however, but that's because classic Doom was handed out like candy due to the Columbine shootings in order to prevent a ban doing anything.

classic doom was shareware so everyone played it either way and columbine had nothing to do with it (those who are too young to remember - shareware games were like demos but extended, usually the entire episode was fully playable with most of the features)

I pirated it. The mechanics very obviously miss the point of the original doom, and with how mobile the enemies are, how they explode into pinatas of health/ammo, how you jump and climb around arenas, it makes enemy/item placement and level design pretty much worthless as just about every fight plays out the same.

Plus, this makes the only way to make the game 'harder' is to just up the damage output of your opponents. Ultra-Violence is so damn easy and the only difference I've seen between it and Nightmare is that in Nightmare, an Imp's fireball takes you down to basically zero health.

I noticed one night that instead of intense, adrenaline-pumping action, the game was something nice to play to wind down before bed.

That's not actually true, ID Software completely removed any fees for selling Doom at brick and mortar stores. If you were a store owner and sold DOOM for $60, you made the full $60 and didn't owe anything back. This was huge in the game being pushed, you couldn't go anywhere without shelves being littered with DOOM.

Obviously a lot of people pirated the title, but it secured DOOM's title as one of the best selling games of the period.

Memento Mori is an old ass wad. It's pretty much the OG of community megawads and back in the day people had a radically different idea of what a hard Doom map was. Both Memento Mori's are a bit tame by modern standards (They're still pretty though).

The original Scythe is considered harder than it's sequel but both are challenging and have great architecture. Speed of Doom and that new JPCP wad have some really tough levels to crack, although JPCP is fairly easy on the first five or so maps, it ramps up quickly and without remose. Jenesis will kick your ass if you thought pain elementals, fatsos and agitated skeletons were weak and there's also the two Hell Revealed wads to put a cherry on the hordes of archviles and cyberdemons with some really good cacodemon placement in a few maps that will really fuck your shit up.

You won't see mods because of denuvo. snapmap was an attempt to bandaid this issue but it failed completely.

This might seem like a dumb question, but are there any mods that allow you to play Doom using Software Renderer but fix the distorted view when using freelook? My computer only supports up to OpenGL2.1 so there are annoying visual bugs that can't be fixed, namely decals all appear as fuzzy crosses and dashes, colour from sprites tends to bleed through walls and other sprites and so forth. Software renderer has no issues except freelook distortion.

Anybody know some good sountrack mods for DOOM that add in some electronic? Playing Demonsteele and the usual/rock metal just doesn't seem to fit at all, and the only one I could find was Rokeleko 1&2 (All Electronic) which was fine but not very energetic.
