Apparently the devs haven't advertised it on steam or released their release trailer yet because they are trying to make sure the servers are good first.

I've played several matches, here's what I think:

Looks good
Feels ok
Lots of customization and options, you can make your own fucking crosshair
music is bland as fuck
sfx and ambience are meh
map design ranges from average to terribly bad
Vehicles are fun
You can't tell weapons apart from each other because of their extremely bland and samey design
Every weapon has two fire types
Tutorial is terribly bad
UI is bad
The movement they are shilling so hard for is basically UT with very discrete differences
Bots are stupid
I cant find any player so come and populate it you fucking niggers
Rocket launcher seems weaker than in other games
Plasma ball rifle looks op as fuck
Flamer is fun
You can pilot a mech

Given it is free (with restrictions : no server browser, you can't access some maps), I'd say it's decent. Clearly not as good as what it aims to be (UT clone) but probably still pretty fun given you find other people to play with.

Quake has 800 players right now. Casuals did want to give Quake Live a real chance but they blew the launch and the UI, especially being a web browser game was an abomination enough to make even those were interested, disinterested. In fact you had to do the skill measurement fight every fucking week with how much they were updating and wiping the game. Quake is dead.

Guys, that game is shit. They try to make a ut copy but it plays like total garbage. Those guys don't know how ut is played. I looked into it back when the first gameplay videos came out and it's trash.

They want to copy ut, but they decide to copy ut3, the bad one. They then add a lot of bullshit that doesn't fit into ut like rocket jumping and remove the shield gun. on top of that the shock rifle is gone.

Yeah and nobody uses it. The whole thing is you can choose one auxiliary weapon before you spawn, and that's it. Selection is usually a small handful of less common guns such as machine gun or nail gun, normally the map would already have them anyway.

UT4 feels like UT99. Toxikk feels like it leans towards UT2k4. I've never played a game that felt like UT2k4 as much as this one. Though they've got rid of the rats-style maps style of 2k4 in what few they have.

Okay so the difference between ut99, 2k4 and ut3. ut99 is a slow shooter, at least 1vs1 dm. The other mods like ctf and assault were faster because of the translocator and because you could boost your teammates by shooting at them.

There was no double jump and no rocket jumping. I will attach a bunch of webm's soon.

with ut2k4 they tried something new. They wanted to make the game faster and added dodge jumps. The maps were also designed more open. But they removed the "glitches" that made ut99 fast.

ut3 wanted to go back to ut99 but didn't go the full way. You can't dodge jump anymore but double jump is in the game. Translocator is slow as fuck.

You can basically say that ut99 was a slow game, and ut2k4 was a fast game (still slow compared to quake).

The problem with other game designers, or epic games themselves is that they don't understand their own games. They always try to mix something instead of going fast or slow.

As another user over 30 who's first arena shooter was ut99 for the motherfucking dreamcast and played and enjoyed UT2K4, UT3, a lot of Halo multiplayer (close enough), I agree with everything in this post. The whole arena shooter "genre", if such a thing even exists, is a product of a certain time, a short-lived trend, and hardware limitations. They really just aren't fun anymore, the poor imitators we get today doubly so.

ut is simply the wrong direction. It has a few nice aspects, like the shock rifle and certain tricks you can do with the piston but in the end it is very limited.

I think arena shooters should go the Quake/Half life, e.g. have something like pre nerf hl bhop. Those who master bhopping in hl are basically unkillable because they can dodge projectiles. I think we need something like that.

That + decent weapons, like more shotguns or generally weapon that go into the lever action way, like the gauss gun in hl or a slightly nerfed version of the instantgib rifle.

After a certain age, or maybe just time playing games, you stop getting any kind of enjoyment out of fragging kids in uninspired warehouses with platforms and lava and acid and shit. The problem with current arena shooters is that they don't require any skill. All these UT clones copy a game that already wasn't that hard to learn, but remove all the shit from the game that was actually somewhat hard to pull off.
