Does starting during legfest (and getting an SSR) really make all that much of a difference? I want to start playing, but don't really want to wait for another 15 days or so to do so.

Will missing out on this cost me hundreds of hours of grind later on, or force me to blow 9999999999usd to catch up? Forgive me if I'm being dumb. I know almost nothing about this game right now.

It actually can kind of cost you hundreds of hours of grind later on, but understand if you want to get powerful in this game you'll be grinding for years nonetheless.

Starting during the legfest and getting an SSR that you want involves making new accounts where each new account gets a total of three possible SSR rolls at a 6% chance.

In standard play, you get about 5k crystals per month, 3k of which can go to a 10-pull where, outside of legfest, gives you a 3% chance each pull for an SSR. Alternatively, you can save those crystals per month for 18 months so that you have 90k and can do 300 pulls, each with a 3% chance, plus a guaranteed waifu pick all at the same time. It's not really a question of grind, it's just that the stamina system prevents you from getting very many more crystals per month, and even if it didn't there are a lot more important things than farming crystals.

However, the main story gives you several powerful characters - the first character you even receive is like the second best SR period and remains important all the way through late game. Doing a couple of 10-pulls to get at least the 1 guaranteed SR should more than easily give you enough flexibility to make a competent party, if that's all you care for; plus, there are lots of free event characters. The previous event gave us SR Barawa who is RNGesus - sometimes he deals 100,000% Fire damage and basically one-shots anything that has less HP than the damage cap - and he still has pretty good skills besides for an attacker. Right now you can get retarded barney who is a good tank and you can pick her element, but this event only lasts for 2 more days.

Yes and no, when you make a new account you get a free 10 pull and it you do it during the legfest you have a higher chance to get a SSR character, however even without the legfest you have a good chance of getting a decent starting character by just re-rolling over and over.

You don't need a high tier character to be able to progress, it helps but it's not a must.

Since this is a grindgame your best bet is to dick pick, i advice you to get a char YOU like since you are going to grind with that char for a very very long time.

The game is perfectly playable without spending money on it, spending money is not even going to get you nowhere near top boards because you are against players that have been consistently playing/paying since release and they have unique things that can't be farmed or bought any more.

Mobage games are all about self improving and enjoying the game at your pace, you will never ever beat game founding players, this has been the case since the first mobage was released and will be till the last.

90k crystals give you 300 cerulean whatevers which give you a pick.

They are pseudo levels and give the weapon/summon +1 HP & +5 ATK per plus. I don't know if you benefit from a Support Summon's HP and ATK values or if the Support Summon's ATK value is used to determine its damage.

Having said that their actual level is a better indicator of a summon's damaging strength but you're generally picking for auras above anything else.

After you element it you need to get a MLB SSR bow from guild wars, which is unlikely to be obtainable in one try.

And then you need a fucktop of materials to upgrade the SSR.

And then you need to max the level and skill of the SSR.

And then you consume the rusty bow to pick an element for your SSR bow.

And then you need another fuckton of mats along with rares from every single rare monster across the various worlds.

And then you get your character!

Introduce new weapon for light element, SSR chevalier swords(BIG HP up, SMALL ATK UP), these were beyond broken, after a week or so they were modified and are now the ONLY weapon in shop that doesn't restock every month(unlike rest of magna weapons)

Another fun thing with the moons is that, about a year ago, there was a referral system where you could get crystals and stuff. Well, they made a dumb mistake with the referral system where you could just create alts to pad out your referrals quite easily.

Needless to say, this system was abused.

At some point they did a huge ban-wave, and the game basically became a ghost town - anyone with more than 12 referrals, whether legit or not, was banned. The worst part is, a lot of these people were some of their larger whales. They had to quietly unban a whole lot of these people except for the very worst offenders.

So… Come the Moon system, there was some fine print somewhere that said anyone previously punished for abusing the referral system would not get Moon awards for the introduction of the system.

But then they did. Most people thought that CyGames decided to go back on what they said, and spent their moons.

Then they got banned again. CyGames said it was a mistake they got the moons, and banned all of these accounts to go in and remove their moons, and try to "fix" anything that the moons were spent on (which usually meant a loss of resources for the player, if they spent items upgrading things).

Now that's interesting, oh cygames, you will never cease to amuse me

I don't begrudge them for trying these new things, but in the end it only ever seems to benefit whales and the most dedicated freemium NEET players.

The key to beating him is to use summons and ougis to whittle him down. Once he takes enough damage he'll self-inflict a def debuff and then you can hammer him same as usual.

So the strategy would be to either burst damage him rolling for good bluff or out tank his damage and slowly cut him down to size. Neither is an easy way for new players, though, which makes this boss a wall for a lot of new players.
