spriters-resource.com/
THE number one resource for sprites and other effects. Has just about everything.
vgmaps.com/
Has an absolute shit ton of maps ripped directly from game. Great for background study.
sprites-inc.co.uk/
This is strictly all Megaman sprites. All the faggots that read Bob and George growing up are completely familiar with this place.

Other Sites.
pixelation.org/
Forum dedicated to pixel art, has plenty of helpful information.

Website with tons of galleries from users showcasing their work.

Programs for pixel art.
graphicsgale.com/us/
A powerful animation and graphics editor designed for pixel art. The free version is fine, only downside is it doesn't export gifs.
aseprite.org/
A much more simpler, user friendly, pixel art program. Has basically all the tools Graphics Gale does, free version is gimped and the guy has it paywalled. Luckily a helpful user has uploaded it.

Finally figured out how to draw glass.

wew lad

you could argue that you chose the wrong distro but maintainers are on the other end of the planet

I remember Debian and derivates had Aseprite compiled with some unpatched version of Allegro for a long time, which basically made it unusable as the window had a small fixed size. Last time I tried on Debian Sid, everything worked correctly again.

Pixel art is easy

Those aint pixels lad!

...

What are they then?

MoM user here; I thought you guys may also appreciate some of the non project related sprite work I have done too.

Oh, also to reply to that. They are very JPEG'y. Plus, they is some poor usage of particle effects such as the swiping effect and magic blast. While PS1 games do it, it doesn't look so good on a still image.

Cute.

Oh neat, another thread.

Just wanna say, after having used Graphics Gale for years, Aseprite is better in every way. Especially in terms of animating, it's simply much faster.

Personally, while I'm not the world's ultimate pixel art master, I have done it well enough to be paid for it, simply making sprites isn't the issue for me. The problem is having a game to make them for.

I am 100% terrible at coding and the art for a game is already more than enough work in itself unless you're aiming for bottom of the barrel indie garbage art direction. WHICH I ABSOLUTELY LOATHE. I've worked on enough projects to know the only practical way to make the 2D game of my dreams would be to have a programmer partner, so I could focus on the best art one person could make.

Hey, you're in the exact same boat as me.
I've found that game jams work great to find a good programmer. After that you can work on something bigger or refine your prototype if it's good.
Going in blind with someone you haven't work before has never worked for me.

As for coming up with a game concept that's both manageable for a 2 man team to make and also fun to work on, I have no idea.

MoM as in Memoirs of Magic?

Someday I'll learn to use palettes and do proper shading like a real pixel artist. Until then I guess I'll just keep using blurs and shit to achieve shading.

keep it coming I need more examples of pixelshit

stick to rotoscoping, kid

Does sound like we have a lot in common alright. I agree that going in blind with someone I haven't worked with before would almost certainly be terrible. If both of you aren't naturally in agreement on most things, have similar tastes, etc, it's going to get real bad, real fast. Finding a good programmer partner isn't just about finding a competent programmer, it's about finding one who wants to make the same things you do. And that's a tall order.

For that matter, I also don't have a good idea that's two-guys simple. If it's just the ol' "make what you'd want to play," then a Metroidvania or Demon's Crest style adventure-sidescroller would be my jam, I have always loved those. But that sort of thing would easily be pushing it with exactly two people. But otherwise, there are no super simple games I actually like. And it's torture to work on stuff you don't like if you aren't at least being paid.

theres no need to be upset
just tell us which pixel artist touched you and we'll find him

personal tastes:
palette's too garish to be readable
hairclip is on the wrong side
you dont seem to be workign with a limited palette so why's the pants blue
seriously, palette's so garish there's little to no contrast between the two brightest colours of orange
why're the arms not striped too

on the other hand, I do like a lot how you got the freckles in

Is there an alternative to these two? inb4 MS Paint

Photoshop, gimp, Paint.net (if that's still around). Basically anything works.

...

In my case not even money drives me. It really gotta be something I can sink my teeth into, otherwise I lose interest. I've worked for good pay before but I couldn't keep it up for long.

First looks like something from JoJo

as /agdg/fag, i use paint.net

I use that too. I've only played around with pixel art but I would like to get serious with it.
I have two questions.
1. How do I dither with it?
2. How do I get rid of this fucking start up error?

aseprite
and
aseprite

I made this for when we were writing a "Thank You," note to TotalBiscut. How does it look?

You'll have to find a plugin for dithering. As for the error, maybe try reinstalling the .net framework?

Also, if you're going to get serious with it, just ditch Paint.net entirely and go for something like Aseprite. Paint.net's okay for general image editing, but it's bad for pixel art because it doesn't support animations and has a small palette.

I think it's shit and you should kill yourself.

no one replied to my pixels last time :/

What is it?

Some giant fungal construct.

I posted this last time.

i love you, labby

Nigga, your game is hot shit on aggydaggy. Everybody likes your pixels, but already knows about them.

Don't use so many super dark outlines around objects, it makes them stick out way too much. I get you are trying to make the silhouette visible but try making them at tad light. Also you don't really need it for stuff that's inside the boundary, like this stone wall and the tree.

Why does it have green mossy growths on it's skull but purple fungusy growths on it's shell?
I think it looks pretty good other than that.

don't dox me!

Oh… Am I old and busted now?

hard outlines are my "AESTHETIC", but I also don't necessarily agree. My stuff is more GAME art than pixel art though, so stuff like walls are made up of different pieces, and not a complete composition.

Different fungi? I dunno.

If anyone wants uh any HELP with pixel stuff I'll give shitty advice.

your atmosphere and surroundings/world pixel art is good

however your MC spritesheet and humanoid spritework is subpar.

Yea I've been meaning to practice more but fuck I'm lazy and I have a fulltime job anyways. I started with and did a portrait pixelart after some inspiration but realized it was hard and teetered off near its completion.

So I figured I would just practice assets and repeatable tiles and the sort. I've got some other tiles but they aren't really turning out yet.

Looks good. Nice and spoopy. The back right leg reminds me of when a girl has her panties down one leg. Just thought I would mention that for no reason.

you can't stop me

Not what I meant. But everyone's seen the ones that you posted earlier. I await your game, even if it doesn't look like a genre that I'm into.

But if you take long enough, you'll still become old busted hotness.

But don't rush it, either, or you'll be new but busted.

yeah

Looks good, although perhaps too little hue variation from dark to light values, but depending on your style it could work. There's also probably a bit too much detail, and too high of contrast. Generally with floor tiles I like to lower contrast and slightly lower saturation to make characters POP more. Pretty decent overall though.

pls

So I get to look forward to being an old and busted has been before my prime. w e l p
I'm old and busted in waiting.

wew lad

But look at it this way. If you do your game right, it sells well. If it sells well, you become a prodigy and can retire early or make even more, better geimu. And I believe in your ability to do so.

I'll check your "devlog" every now and then.

This. (ID checked.)

Nah. Only in that you'll be an established entity here, so you won't have the hype of being the new shit. But that's only here, and we're a relatively small slice of the world. Still, you know how Holla Forums is. We prefer the game that took forever and was good to the game that was just on time.

Please direct your shitty advice this shitty sprite. I really have no idea what I'm doing, aside from
I have not quite into art yet.

Your proportions/perspective is pretty whack, but I'm not a REAL artist so I can't give the best advice. Mostly that back leg looks MUCH bigger than the front one, and the same goes with the arm holding the scimitar deal. To be honest it's kind of hard to discern what's going on to give proper critique hehe, it's like a series of weird perspective optical illusions. You colors are serviceable, but adding highlights and shading won't fix what you've got going on. If I were you I'd just brute force out a bunch of variations of the same guy, over the course of a couple hours and then give up in frustration.

He's floating and holding his sword over his shoulder, but it still doesn't meet his shoulder, because I cannot into perspective or weight.
This is, without a doubt, my Achilles Heel. I'm aware that it's fucked, but somehow when I see it in my mind, I cannot translate it to paper/pixels. If the few encounters I've had with /ic/ have told me anything, it's that this probably can only be fixed by liberally applying Loomis.

Yea thanks. I was going for high detail definitely. Great thing of course about pixel art is you can have multiple versions of the same tile so I have a few that are far more simple for reasons you mentioned.

Also I like your rounded stonework tiles in your pics that I've seen so far. I've tried something similar but it's been harder to do than I anticipated.
I guess roundstuffs=harder than symmetric lined stuff.

Looks neat-o and really close to hitting where it should. I imagine it just needs a more human-like natural stance or something.
The claw(axe?) arm is too straight and the brown part inbetween the claws has some type of interference slightly with the robe/tunic whatevers skirt as well. And other things mentioned by the other dude.

is this some game?
if yes, then GIMME !

I should probably let him answer for his own game, but he hasn't responded yet and may have left by now.

Homeboy's been working on that over at /agdg/. It's not out yet, but he's making sick progress.

I hope it's finished before October because at that time I'll go to the military service. So during that time I might forget…

I'd fuck it.

For (You)

My nigga from another era.

I saw the other thread and wanted to try making a pixel thing for fun. I've done it once before a few years ago, but I was shit at it and didn't try it since.

Only problem I see is that there are way too many white splotches, especially on the helmet.

Thanks, that's easy enough to fix quickly.

...

If that's your biggest criticism, we must be doing something right.

Some stuff from The Chaos Engine, might download the level editor and rip the maps since they are full of detail. Same goes for GODS
That fucking dithering

Some maps

Sprites

Stuff from GODS.

Really shit Wakfu sprite made by me in 5 minutes.

Would shoot to collect item or remove enemy / 10
The old one doesn't look that bad either.

This is the easiest way to add texture to something, goddamn, I love it.

...

Which of these two are correct? Is color "3D" gray or is it light pinkish?

Depends on the TV, the NES does not output or handles RGB in any way.

Like user said-

There's no real "correct" color, even emulators have this problem. That's why Nestopia has multiple color settings. Just pick one that looks nice.

I was just asking because Aseprite shows it as a gray but most of the charts I've seen and are familiar with show that weird color. Are there any games that use color "3D" in their sprites or other graphics?

Holy shit I can't decide what kind of a color palette to use when making pixelshit. I've seen so many yet I can't fucking make my mind up.

How can this be? They have to have known what they were going for when they came up with the pallet. What's going on with the hardware?

can someone spam color pallets? I'm having this problem too.

If you want something like the NES but a bit more prettier.

None

That's p cute.

freckles and small chests are my weakness.

I want more

that was all I could find

Do you mean specifically more by this guy or..?

or what?

Does someone have a screencap of when this was made?

I tried making a game about a girl in a spooky neighborhood full of dead people resurrected as random bullshit, and then Undertale came out. Pretty much killed my motive because whatever I made would've just ended up being called a copy.
I never really got far off from just concept sprites.
I also at some point tried making an animal crossing game but where you can fuck the villagers with an isometric view, but that died pretty quickly once my partner decided to not learn a better engine then game maker. I'll post those if I can find them later.

Why would you care so much about what people call your game that you'd end up not making it?

I'm guessing it was because of the serious hatedom that developed around Undertale. It even started to reflect back on Earthbound with some anons calling it a shit series.

Yes, I get an Undertale vibe from this picture. If I didn't have context, I'd assume it was a shitty attempt at a clone. Sorry, user.

Don't let the fact they made a game deter you. Follow your dreams.
If you're as lazy as any other fuck here, it'll take you 5+ years to make it, and people would have forgotten about it.

more in general

As someone that never drew anything in pixel art, i have some questions:

Where should i start? should i start copying sprites to understand how and where to draw everything, or should i stick with drawing things by myself from the get go?

Do i start by drawing objects, backgrounds or characters?

Does other forms of drawing reflect greatly learning how to draw pixel art or references are enough to help with forms, proportions and lightning?

i always wanted to draw, but my hands are too shaky while i hold a pen, so my drawings were always shit, if experience in other forms of drawing are not required, i think i can finally get myself a new hobby.

all those questions are fucking garbage
learn to draw
then come back

What's this from?

At least try to understand that pixel art and traditional art are one in the same and study the fundamentals. It will make the learning process much easier and you'll be much quicker to learn from observation.

Use the one that gives off the feel you're going for or is matched to the platform who's pixel art that you are mimicking.

You could just change the graphical style. It'll be totally different to the average consumer then.

I say this without irony.

well, your game is probably shit, and nobody will play it to form an opinion anyway because you wouldn't have finished it even without the excuses

My game? What?
And I didn't even say anything bad about Undertale anyway.
Here, have a pixel loli and calm down.
