You'd be surprised how far you can get with physical abuse alone. Mix in something sexual - anything that violates that psychological boundary and it you will leave a permanent alterations of their core personality. It depends on what kind of brainwashing you are talking about. If you talk about individual, specific brainwashing - preferably with seperate personalities you can trigger on command - then its pretty simple:
Find an abused/abducted young person (the younger, the better. Children are the best). Torture the shit out of that kid while giving her a dog/cat/cuddly toy/something she can bond to.
Keep torturing the shit out of her. Make sure she also has to torture or at least watch other torturing of other victims. Rape is also always great. So are electric shocks, oxygen and sleep deprivation. You know the gist.
