Final Fantasy

I never played any FF game, where do I start?

FFIX

FF13

Wherever you want. They're only vaguely connected to each other. My favorites are V, VII, and IX, though.

none of them because rpgs are 1000000% suck

6 or 9

These are pretty good games to start to get the basics down.

FFIX is the best one easily. Garnet best girl.

FFIII is also really good and one of my personal favourites out of the classic final fantasy games, even introduced the job system later final fantasies would build upon.
If you like MMORPG's XI is still up and running and XIV is WoW but way better.

Excuse me?

BEST
GIRL

furfag detected

Do those psp ones work with the emulator? I'm sure the gba one does.

The old ones are the best but they haven't aged well which calls FF's validity as a classic series into question. Anyway, play 4 and 6.

Good job!

of course, just use PPSSPP and it should work nicely. I played FFIV on an emulator and it went smooth as can go.

On my second playthrough I named Dagger Garnet to start with and during the "reveal" scene they cleverly switched the names. I thought that was a nice touch.

I wonder why so many people who don't play video games come to this board. It's already full of Holla Forumsacks, casuals, and complete fucking idiots.

Glad to see you can identify your own kind.

sorry, you're right. I should have saged.

I didn't have a console as a kid so I never played FF or MGS. Only played n64 when I was at my friends place.
How is this a problem?

Then that's your problem pal. You aren't a kid anymore are you? You still should have played it by this point. FF is on every console past 6th gen

That flowchart's pretty good actually. Both VII and IV have relatively simple mechanics and good pacing to keep a newbie interested and later try other entries in the series.

Hey, I'd rather take time to educate them and turn them away from the darkness. **Like I always try to convert CoD kiddies into connoisseurs of Doom WADs.

Even Beatrix is a better character.

here is your reply

doing gods work user, just getting them to play DOOM would be nice. also I really need to finish pirate doom already.

fixed that for you.

With the first game like you would any other series.

You start by throwing them in a trash can

So she was called Dagger for the rest of the game?

Yea no.

Yeah. She chose her assumed name from the garnet gemstone in the necklace she was wearing instead of the dagger in her hand.

FF6
FF7
FF9
FF5
FF4
FF12
FF tactics

That is pretty clever

Play FF7 and forget about the rest, just like everybody else.

Cyberpunk > Weebshit

4,5,6

the rest don't matter.

FF7 is only liked by waifufags

Start with V then stop, because it's the pinnacle

7 is the best but none of these contrarian man children will ever admit it since normalfags share this opinion

...

Tactics
then stop

You don't, they're garbage.

I only liked 12

Surely that title would go to XIII or XIII-2 or Lightning Returns

There is tactics for gba and for psp I think, are they the same?

Tactics PSP is a remake of the original PS1 version. The two GBA "tactica" games were Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and FFTA2, and they're completely, completely different.

Are you not a normalfag?
FF5

Do you want to be considered "cool" to the normalfags?
FF9, FF7, FF10

Do you hate yourself but like gameplay?
FF10-2, FF3

Do you just hate yourself?
FF2

Are you a casualfag who can't into more than 5 stats?
FF14

Play FF6.
Then stop.

I knew I forgot one on the "Do you want to be considered "cool" to the normalfags?" list!

Okay, I was being vicious out of spite. VI is overrated, and IX never lived up to Square's promises regarding it being anything like classic FF (also the music is Uematsu's most boring work.)

VI is overrated because it has a meandering plot with no real main character. It's main character in name only, Terra, has basically no character to her at all. The game balance is shit, the difficulty is shit, the visuals are dull, the villain is probably the most shitty and 2 dimensional of any FF has ever delivered and that's the worst part because that faggot is one of the reasons the game gets praised so much.

Of course shit like FFXIII is worse. I don't even count that shit, it doesn't exist as far as I am concerned. I treat the MMO FFs the same way. They don't exist (though not due to quality, I just don't give a fuck about MMO grinding bullshit)

It should go without saying I don't lump shit like Mystic Quest in with the mainline titles either, or else it would be worse than VI or IX in my ratings.

Case and point of some faggot pretending FFVI isn't mediocre.

Sorry I just don't like the others.
Well except for 12. I enjoyed 12.

I can see why people would stay away from the MMOs. I'm a huge faggot and I needed my MMO fix. That said,
>mfw FF14 called out the jew syndicate to the point the playerbase won't even play that race and mock those that do\

Fun fact, the only reason Vaan is in that game is because the female shut-ins in japan needed a twink character. Not the first time that's happened over there though, look up the reason Raiden exists in the metal gear series. If you like 12 then just play a trial of the MMO. It's just 12 with a longer storyline and more grind.

True that. The correct FFIX rankings are Freya, than Beatrix at a close second, then a few pretty unimportant NPCs with cool designs, then Garnet.

I just realized that Beatrix has like, no good fan art though. Freya at least has a handful of decent pics, but Beatrix has nothing that does her justice.

Freya is just a furry character that was given more characteristics than "i'm so yiffy!" so of course the furfags jumped on Freya.

Even Khmari was a better written Lancer than "muh dead husband a bloo bloo bloo!" rat bitch.

ur a faget

But like most FFX characters, Khimari had a bad visual design, (especially bad if you ask me,) so I never payed attention to his characterization to care. You gotta hook me with appealing visuals first before you can real me in with character development. I do appreciate that you made the lancer comparison though, that is one of Freya's selling points for me. In actual practice, Jump has always been a super lame ability not worth using outside of hardcore low-level runs, but spears look cool and I love the idea of super agile spear fighters.

Also, Khimari was a dude, which makes him irrelevant to "best girl" arguments no matter how great he was.

Look up what the japs called that game over there. The results might surprise you~!

If we are just talking about 9 then even Erika and Ruby are better best girl b8 than the kike rat person.

Sorry, calling Freya a jew was over the line and I apologize.

6

7, 10

10-2

2,8

14, 7, 10,

...

Yeah, Square learned from the whole Nanaki shenanigans in FF7

(OP) (OP) (OP)

Not a bad flow chart.

My own personal favorites are 6, 4 and 7, in that order.

6 and 7 tend to be a bit more free form in that you can make and customize your party however you see fit. Sure, there are certain character propensities (i.e. Terra in 6 is more aligned to be a caster naturally, Cloud in 7 is more aligned to be a physical damager) but otherwise everyone can literally do everything eventually, so you can mix and match to your hearts content.

On the other hand, 4 is more of a rigid class-based approach. Each character has a skillset that doesn't change (with two exceptions that are story-based) which in turn creates a different feel. It's also slightly more "being led down a hallway" compared to 6 and 7, but that's a niggling critique on my part. And to be fair, it's absolutely nowhere near the level of "led down a hallway" that 13 is. The only constrictions that 4 places on you have to do with party configuration, and this is based entirely on the story at the time, whereas 6 and 7 have just the occasional character usage limitation.

Some general advice with minor spoilers if you end up trying this stuff out OP:

For 6 - don't put all your cards on Terra in the early game. Go with Celes first; Terra makes the better pure caster later on, but for story reasons you often find Terra taking off at inopportune times until you get into the last half of the game.

For 4 - you will never *not* have Cecil, but everyone else comes and goes (and sometimes returns again) at one point in time or another, right up until you finish beating the massive thing from the inside out. After that, you'll have the "final" party of the game and can feel free to go do sidequests and what not with that group without fearing that anyone will be put in a fridge or something.

For 7 - you'll be tempted to load everyone up on materia, but keep in mind all the magical stuff, including the Summon materia, lowers physical stats. Overloading your physical hitters with materia will really hurt their ability to function as regular attackers. As the game goes on you'll get access to more materia and gear that counteracts this to a degree, but early on try to avoid loading each character down with materia. Set one of the three up as a "caster" type while the other two have a mix with some magic/summons and other physical-buffing materia.

Also, don't be like an old friend of mine and put everything you've got into Aerith.

eh….good enough

Six is the best FF, followed by Five

Even 5 was more tolerable than 6. 6 was just 7 without the steampunk setting, materia system and all.

Bravely Default

Kefka was great as a villain because he was Heath Ledger's Joker before Heath Ledger was. He also is the only FF villain to actually destroy the fucking world, unlike Darky McMommyissues in 7, or Ambiguously Gay Villain #33 in 9

But you're right about 6 being exploitable in the extreme. Great, fun game imo, but you could break it so easily almost from the get-go if you know what you're doing.

As for 9, I took Square to mean that they were going for a more retro look/styling instead of a mechanical throwback. But that whole era of Square was kinda fucked, with their PlayOnline bullshit being linked to everything under the sun. Then they got it in their heads to make a god damned movie and now we have Square Enix instead of Squaresoft, so we know how well that shit worked out.

Play Shadow Hearts instead.

...

I know you're talking about Red XIII, but in reference to what exactly? I think you forgot a post pointer.

Yeah, everything about PlayOnline was pure garbage. The near-useless strategy guides, the intentionally impossible to figure out secrets put there so you'd need PlayOnline, good riddance. I wish we could have a FFIX without that stuff. And with at least PS2-level graphics. It sucks that the last FF game with truly good art direction was stuck with ugly first-gen 3D. It'd be nice to have a 3D FF that had good graphics and style for once. FFXII's art direction was almost good, but not quite. The backgrounds were fine, but not so much the character designs.

pic related was how I felt about that shit. What the fuck is the point of a strategy guide if they just tell you to go some place else?

I don't think it's a coincidence that this kind of bullshit happened alongside the rise of GameFaqs.

And don't get me started on that fucking bullshit Prima guide for FF11. Fucking assholes, shitting all over WAR, ruining it for literally fucking everyone who wanted to main WAR after NA release because "muh guide" said WAR was a "basic" job.

Yeah I mad. Got plenty of JP parties as a Fragmentation closer with WAR/THF though. At least until the damn PS2 console release brought all the shitters who couldn't understand the concept of "ask, don't demand." Fucking console players ruined everything.

My friend bought that. He was really into buying strategy guides so that he could 100% every game he owned. The FFIX one was the first one I actually opened up and read, and I thought he was a fucking idiot because the guides didn't help him at all.

People would get Red on their second playthrough and then name him Nanaki. So when Cosmo Canyon came along, you'd get the "Nanaki's name is Nanaki!?" line and it was kinda funny to see that play out.

So the next time a name swap occurred, Square got wise and added a nice touch with the Garnet/Dagger dichotomy. You had a lot of people expecting "Dagger" to name herself "Dagger" again, but Square pulled a nice little switcheroo that surprised a lot of people.

Which is great. It showed that someone, somewhere, thought about this and implemented a good workaround that was based in the story, while also kinda providing a nod to the fans at the same time. Something of an Easter egg in a sense. A "hey, we know you guys will pull this shit, so we left a little something for you" moment that worked out great.

That's not counting how its a shit, overrated JRPG series in general that had two good games in it at best. I can name at least a half dozen series with multiple entries that are better in every aspect from the top of my head.

1. Dragon Quest
2. Breath of Fire
3. SMT
4. Tales series
5. Lunar
6. Mana series

post rare Lightnings

user, just because one book exists, doesn't mean you can't read other books. Also:

Turns out that folder got deleted on my computer. God dammit.

Kefka > momma's boy
spritework > lego graphics
2D > 3D

Also Six had better music. stay pleb

You're not wrong. It was was the early 2k's version of "would you like to know more?" only without any actual knowledge from following the link.

It's funny, cause looking back, I can quite clearly see Squaresoft getting a bit too big for it's britches. By the time Vagrant Story came out, Square had at least another dozen IP's either coming soon, or recently released, including Einhander (bullet hell shmup), Ehrgeiz (underrated fightan game), and FFT. I remember looking at the catalogue of games they were offering in 1999-2000 and it was like over 50 games. They were really expanding not just as developers, but as a publisher too.

And then FF11 was released in the NA. And while this was awesome in and of itself on PC, shit hit the fan when the console kiddies came on board and pooped the pool with the JP players. So you had these merged NA/EU/JP servers, with Squares grand multicultural MMO experiment, and if you couldn't speak moon then tough shit, it was JP ONRY w ok? while the console kiddies ran around dying to literally everything and ruining the entire PvE-region control game at the same time.

Then Square thought this was a great time to make a feature length film chock full of big name's as VA's, and while it was fun in it's own right (and I'd love to see the in-house porn made of Aki Ross….because no one makes a CGI character like that without having her do lewd things) it was definitely not the right basket to put their eggs into.

Fuck me I'm old.

To be honest, VII give them so much cash and publicity they just went all out with complete disregard to any potential risk. I mean, look at how fucking FFVIII, Xenogears and Chrono Chross turned out. And yet they STILL kept going. I don't know what drugs Sakaguchi and co. were on, but they had to be good.

That was around the time Enix came showed up, isn't it? Or soon after, anyway. They were never the same since they merged.

Yeah, it was kind of fortuitous (or maybe (((fortuitous)))?) that Enix started to go downhill about the same time Square did. It made the merger of the two something that actually could happen. And this was two companies that had been rivals of a sort for over a decade at that point.

I think has the right of it for both companies. I think the PS1 era really broadened the playerbase for RPG's, since the graphics were much better, meaning you could rope in the people who weren't able to mentally imagine a world from generic sprites. So both Square and Enix saw a lot of success, got really big, apparently had access to some really choice substances, and both collectively blew their wads on a variety of shit.

But again, and maybe I've spent too much time on Holla Forums, the timing seems too (((coincidental))) to me. Not to say da joos did it exactly, just that there might have been some kind of upper echelon shenanigans going on in the halls of power for both companies.

From what I understand about Japanese business culture, there are a lot of 'spies' that get hired in other companies and give reports on what they're up to. Considering they were competitors, it would definitely be beneficial to have someone in your pocket on the other team. Would forcing your company into financial trouble so you can merge with another company forced into financial trouble really be a good idea though? Who benefits?

Just do what I do and skip the games and just jerk off to the rule 34. Saves you like 100+ hours of your life and gives you more satisfaction.

Personally, I miss the days of old experimental Square when they were doing that stuff. Bit stuff like Final Fantasy, weird stuff like Brave Fencer Musashi, and of course, they STILL MADE MANA GAMES. Granted, the later ones were pretty much all failed experiments, but at least they were something. Squeenix hardly touches any of the old Square IPs these days, even though I'd do horrible things for a new proper Mana game.

Really? I can't think of a single good thing to say about Spirits Within whatsoever. Like seriously, nothing. Bad plot/premise, bad action, uninteresting characters with unappealing designs, everything was way too dark to make the CG look better, and seriously, if you make a movie capitalizing on a series about heroes slaying monsters left and right, why make it so the heroes couldn't really fight the monsters at all? Yeah, futilely hiding from ghosts behind energy shields, that's what Final Fantasy is all about, right? That's what I, a Final Fantasy player clearly must want to see!

I get that two hours of random encounter style battles would be a terrible movie too, but just hiding from the monsters the whole movie wasn't much better.

ff6 and ff7 and ff tactics are the only ones that matter

Some third party perhaps. The question would be "who?" because SE is now a juggernaut. One of the few truly successful big mergers, at least in terms of their ability to put out product, both as dev and publisher.

I don't know. I'm probably blowing smoke out my ass. More likely it was just a case of hubris combined with some choice kush and bad decisions from upper management.

user plz. You're on Holla Forums with the rest of us. Just give in to the min/maxing and the waifus and play. Tifa really needs your support *and so do her boobs*

I knew when they merged with Enix we would not be seeing experimental shit like Ehrgeiz anymore. I hate how there is a universe where Ehrgeiz became the Tekken of 3d fighters. I want to live in that universe.

I bet you like FF8 faggot.

You and me both brother. And yeah, I miss the experimental Square too. I just wish they had stuck to experimenting with games, and not branched out into an entirely new division. I'm curious as to how Kingsglaive has been doing. I kinda want to see it myself, but the pain from SW still burns.

As for the movie, I liked the voice acting and the overarching premise behind the spirits. But that was it for me. The rest felt like it was focus-grouped into existence, which is the perfect way for something to fail immediately and spectacularly.

The sad thing is, Pixar came along with Toy Story and basically used an original IP to do what Square wanted to do with FF:SW. If Square had taken that tack, instead of tying it to the FF name and franchise, they might have seen more success. Assuming they didn't get bogged down in the same focus grouping that fucked up SW anyway.

BIG

RAT
TATS

It could be that another publisher wanted less competition. But there's really no way we could know. It'd be fun if some old guy who doesn't give a fuck anymore would just break every NDA he ever signed for shit like that and spill the beans on everything. Maybe in ten years we'll know what the fuck happened at Konami.

Square Enix still has absolutely amazing animators. All of their CG work is beautiful. If they partnered up with a competent writer and director, they might actually have something.

Oh, definitely. Square was doing better work than Pixar was before Pixar was even a thing. The FMV's from 8, 9 and 10 were as good or better than Toy Story was at the time it was released. The attention to detail Square used was unbelievable.

For shits and giggles, if you have Rise of the Tomb Raider, there's an advanced option to enable what amounts to super hair texture mode, where it renders Lara's hair as realistically as possible. I was able to play that game at max settings with no issues when it was released, but when I flipped that option on, my FPS would drop under 20 if I so much as looked at anything that was more than 10 feet away.

But god damn did Lara's hair look good. I remember an interview regarding FF8 where one of the artists said they wanted to really challenge the programmers with Rinoa, which is why her hair and so much of her other outfits had a very flowy feel to them. They wanted to really push what they could do on the PS1.

I know that feel user. I don't want that feel either.

At least we have Dissidia. It's almost the same thing, kinda.

God bless the ring

Time to open up some old feels.

They did the same thing with Lulu's belt dress in FFX. Instead of busting their ass on it, they circumvented the problem by keeping the camera off of it as much as they could.

Post a ff girl better than esper form terra
Protip :

Final Fantasy 10
Final Fantasy 5 (This might be easier to get since Square Enix import it to mobile, it's an obscure game.)
Final Fantasy 7

Bravely Default (This new series is a spiritual successor to old school FF games, like Final Fantasy 4, 5, and 6. So, it's Final Fantasy in nature. But it's only for the Nintendo 3DS family. - Though I heard of rumors of it coming to the PS Vita, but I doubt it).

So did Terra get used for sex while she was under mind control or what?

Why are you asking a question you already know the answer to?

Yes
Anyone knows where's all the terra porn because I have never seen anything

It's a little too hard to believe a villain would mind control someone and not use them as a cum dumpster. That's the bare minimum of villainy in that circumstance.

Kefka seems like the kind of guy who would be disgusted by the exchange of bodily fluids. Yeah he's a megalomanical madman bent on world destruction, but I think he would find that sort of thing icky.

However, I could see him throwing her to "the men" for "morale"

And then we get this shit Biosuck pulls on us with repeated animations going on in the background in a game made 1.5 decades after FF8.

Fuck Bioware. Fuck EA too. With a rake.

Because I don't.

Starlight Duke was too great for this world.

What's up with fan art giving Freya a super voluptuous figure? No way she had that kind of figure based on what wasn't covered up and others of her kind. She was probably super lean under that outfit.

After sex, all that other esper power stuff they were making her do was just icing on the cake.

This too. Considering everything else Kefka would and did do, forced mind control sex would be nothing. And on a general note, it's always seemed incongruent to me how fictional villains so often are fine with lying, stealing, torturing and mass murder, but never get grabby or rapey at all. It's like if you didn't mind blowing up a building but wouldn't dream of throwing a rock through a window.

He did sorta have a breakdown when Celes made him bleed his own blood. I can see where you're coming from.

>However, I could see him throwing her to "the men" for "morale"

Maybe… It relies on two kinda big assumptions. First that the thought would even cross his mind (dude's a bit scatterbrained) and second that he would care about morale. That said, if one of the men suggested it, I doubt he'd give a fuck.

Don't. They are fucking awful games with worse than season anime tier stories.

being a spooky scary skeleton isn't hot

Because it's more attractive then a walking corpse.

FF8 is my favorite. I started out with that a long time ago.

I like giant boobs and meaty hips as much as the next guy, but variety has value now and then, and Freya uniquely makes the super lean look work.

I mean sure, that figure on a human would be horrible "good lord she's nearly starved to death" material, no argument there. But she's not actually human, so I can look at her with different standards. I mean, otherwise her face would be all wrong and her hands would be freakishly big and her feet are the wrong shape and those sure aren't human ears on her head too. And of course, there's the tail. But she's not a human, she's some kinda rat person, so that's right for her. In which case, that super lean figure could very well be their natural healthy state.

But even if you don't like the figure in the first pic, fair enough - That is after all even skinnier than the dancer which is an actual official design. But even then, where's the fan art that gives here the dancer's figure? That'd be fine too, but most of it fills her out well past what could possibly be under that smock or whatever she normally wears is. And ditches the big hands, proportionally extra long arms, and skinny rat legs and all that, it just puts something sorta like her face on a generic (though attractive) human body. I just want to see something closer to the design she really officially had, and the super skinny stuff is probably closer to that than most fan art. We have a million characters with generic attractive figures already, there's a ton in Final Fantasy games alone, but not many Freyas. Personally, I prefer a little variety in my collective waifu fantasies.

You typed all this out.

You, a human being, expended time and energy on this post.

Why the fuck is it illegal to shoot people like this again?

clever user, so clever

6 -> 4 -> 7 -> 8 -> 5 -> tactics -> whatever comes here

Everyone that says to you starting on something beyond 9 is retarded and didn't know what a good storyline is.

You could try playing one of the earlier SNES games(those ones being 4-6), or the more graphically fancy one for Playstation being 7.

For an introductory game into the RPG genre, I'll say Mystic Quest is a great little game on its own despite some chunky flaws. It has done some things I've never quite seen again in another RPG, besides Lufia 2.

It's mostly yiff shit that has her drawn sexy. I think her species' lanky design and fighting styles that match their anatomy looks pretty cool. Freya as a character though, Square just told her to fuck off in both plot and memory.

What a timely thread, I actually just started playing FFX, been streaming it actually. As my first FF.

Yeah, that makes sense. I mentioned it because it's cruel, but the cruelty Kefka likes seems to be more focused around toying with and ending the life of something he deems insignificant. The infliction of humiliation and pain without ultimately resulting in death is something he probably wouldn't be interested in.

Which means he was probably into snuff
inb4 Kefka snuff r34 appears

FF1 you dumb faggot.

ALL RED MAGES
EASY MODE

We would have Mist repopulated as fast as humanly possible.

Have you made it to the laugh scene yet?

Also, Lulu for fluid druid of the year. Auron for best gruff old father figure, tied with dad 76.

If we're looking at the main series VII and IX are probably the two best ones. Pick VII if you like your fantasy mixed with a weird almost-modern aesthetic and a really cool world, pick IX if you like a more traditional fantasy setting but with a arguably better story. Both games are fantastic. Only main FF games I wouldn't recommend are anything with XIII in the title, VIII, and (kind of) XII.

If you like fighting games then the Dissidia series is stellar. It's a shame SE never made one for the Vita.

If you like MMOs then XIV is alright, it's probably the only good "traditional" MMO out there at this point.

...
