Anyway, what really bugged me was seeing what the dude's heads looked like under the headcrabs. Like, most of their head and brain was gone, so…. how were they even functioning? Was what was left over functioning as some super lobotimized minimal amount of brain matter? Was the rest functioning somehow inside the headcrab? And what did headcrabs do to deal with the inevitable infections that would result from everything being so exposed?
Anyway, something messing you up that much but not killing you really freaks me out. Basically any situation where somebody has what should be fatal injuries but isn't dead yet is nightmare fuel, unless magic is definitely involved. Magic undead/zombies/etc don't bother me at all, but Half-Life was more in the sci-fi realm, so I don't think magic was magically solving everything for those zombies. In which case, all the realistic horrific details would be in play.

Somebody jacked his helmet in suit-storage before the first game (I remember that Freeman's Mind series even directly brings it up by the guy playing and narrating disabling the HUD because he wouldn't have a helmet to see it) and when he recovers his suit in HL2 it's still missing the helmet.

They're not domesticated like dogs, and unlike a pet mouse or rat, they can do some legit damage and there isn't much stopping them from doing so. If they were bred to be friendly by nature and not attack and control people, and eat kibble or something then I might consider it.
