My dog pissed on mine which finally killed it. RIP in peace.

Is it worth getting a dreamcast physically? I know I could just emulate the thing, but is there any value in playing the real deal? Does anyone have the dreamcast essentials chart?

So many great games.

Cannon Spike
Soul Calibar
Marvel vs Capcom 1 and 2
Third Strike
Plasma Sword
NFL Blitz
Skies of Arcadia
Shenmue 1 and 2
Powerstone 1and 2
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Super Street Fighter 2 X Grand Master Challenge
Garou Mark of the Wolves

That's just off the top of my head, this system's game library trumps today's consoles output.

...

Emulator isn't accurate or 100% compatible.

...

PROJECT KATANA!

F

Well he was sorta right about something.

Demul got a bunch of good 2015 updates and also got one this month. Works best if you enable vsync.

Are you twelve?

"Prease buy Dreamcasto. For me!"

Depends on how you value your dollar, 50 bucks for a dc with peripherals to have a box to fuck about with and use as an emulation machine, in addition to the ez modo piracy.
I've enjoyed it.

...

It ain't me user, I don't eat pocky

Seriously, try giving Shenmue to a person who has never played it or heard you say a word about it before in their life. Just sit them down in front of the game and watch how uneasy they get at the bad acting and unbelievably bad real-time cutscene editing. Watch in horror as they sigh with frustration every single time they have to search through a bunch of drawers and it takes for-fucking-ever to move Ryo's hand ONE DRAWER AT A TIME! Feel the burning anger of self-resentment as this person mocks the floaty and loose fighting controls.

Face it; Shenmue was an amazing technical achievement but the gameplay is just dogshit.

Skies of Arcadia and Resident Evil: Code Veronica are both better on GC/PS2. I'm so glad that you got to see this entire corporation fail in the most spectacular example of wasted potential this side of Atari crashing into the ground. You dumbass GAYGA fans deserved it.

I got my original DC from 1999 and yet I emulate because I can't be arsed to take it out of the box and plug it in every fucking time I want to play a game

I live in a very dusty area and thats bad for electronics, besides my DC is still almost pristine white rather than booger yellow thanks to this

Salty nintenigger detected

At least give me something with a little bit of rarity.

Only thing wrong with that is that it lacks a second left shoulder button. Otherwise, its the same as every other controller concurrent and since.

Well it's pretty noisy when it reads burned disks and VMUs are a pain because of the low storage space, annoying beep at boot and high price. Most of the really good games on it were either ported or work fine in emulation.

With a real one you can do several mods; put a VGA port on it, GDEMU to replace the optical drive, plug in a broadband adaptor and a SD card reader. Getting a GDEMU is hard because of the low availability and it costs 110 euros. But you can get a DC with a broken drive if you go this route.

I'd get one now with accessories before collectors raise the price to several hundred dollars. Consoles as we know them are on the way out and the Dreamcast was pretty special.

Agree with you partially on Shenmue but some people love it, fail enough QTEs and you'll see a game over screen instead of being shown a cutscene and moved along as is the case with these types of games now. And RE:Code Veronica on the PS2 is a pretty poor port, Skies of Arcadia on the GC has worse music but a less frequent encounter rate. Some games like Confidential Mission are only playable on the DC.

Lacks clicking sticks.

Saturn was segas best console.

Nah, God of War is the one that made QTEs what they are today, and "Games can be cinematic art" has been going on since the old adventure game days. Or are you too young to remember Myst? Shenmue is a fantastic game that did nothing wrong, and frankly the industry is for the worse because no games followed it's example.

Defending gamecube controller in current year, unbelievable.

Qtes were in arcade games like die hard arcade before shenmue.

Cool your autism.

Is how you give real criticism instead of sperging out while trying desperately to fit in. No clicking sticks is a real feature that they lack, but many games forget those exist too.

Sorry you posted a dumb opinion.

kay, you too fam.

He's a filthy weeb.

Nintendo fan base can't read.

Factually incorrect. Games like Dragons Lair and Space Ace did that in arcades well before the Dreamcast existed.

Nope, Sony did that with FF7 advertisement campaign on the PS1.

Now back to the games!

Who is the wrongest man on the Internet?

Clicking sticks give additional control to character movement or camera function in most games today. Many gc games clutter the face buttons for that same functionality. Its a good thing to combine input modifiers to existing controller elements in order to expand the potential for effectively streamlining control and giving more options to players. I still don't know why nintendo back tracked on the sliding clicking shoulder buttons. Analog input + 2 extra buttons in theory is a good thing, it incorporates the same principle that I described above with clicky sticks just as well.

Also on to the saturn, the quantity of superb games is what makes it stand out. The "90% of everything ia shit" concept is replaced with more a 60-70% of everything is great. The system may have been shafted in america but in reality it had about double the games the n64 did, and many amazing titles that have still yet to be surpassed. Cotton boomerang is one of the best shmups ever for example.

It's underrated, but nah. Only a hipster would say it's the best.

...

I find it hard to think of a console with hundreds of great games. Ps1 and ps2 aside, the n64 had maybe 60 great games, and the saturns library is largely exclusive to itself, keeping it a point of interest.

...

I would attempt to do piracy on my DC but I'm afraid of tampering with it and causing one big mistake that'll render it unplayable

You put the disc in, you turn it on. Done.

l o l

Most if not all DCs can play pirated disks without even needing to be messed fiddled with, just burn a CD-R and you're gold.

I've noticed a lot of the good DC games have been ported to other systems, like the Gamecube, Xbox, and Steam.

If I were to get into emulating/collecting Dreamcast titles, which ones are still exclusive, or at least aren't notably improved by later releases?

Iirc its model 2s that have issues. Can be identified by being produced after a certain date, google that shit if you are curious.

so, i got one of them, what's the best brand/burn speed combo so i can start playing vidya in it without killing the laser quickly?

Second guy in this pic.

Where was that, half Holla Forums? Its a blue board, so it can't be Holla Forums.

MARK YOU NIGGER, STICKY THIS SHIT, DREAMCAST WAS THE LAST GREAT CONSOLE

wew lad

I would assume so, though one would really have to double check what the post count of various boards were at back at that time. I mean, that's only a bit over twenty million, whichever board that was from.

Suspicious?

Because everyone on Holla Forums cares so much m8. This thread is 6 hours old and only has 50 replies, get over yourself

You know Holla Forums is shit when a fucking retarded Touhou meme gets more replies than the goddamn Dreamcast.

Ah yeah, how could I forget 9/9/99?

Maybe this is the month I finally pony up for that Dreamcast arcade stick, but the fighting games for the Dreamcast have since been remade better on PC and such…

Don't forget that the Dreamcast controller is a direct descendant of the glorious Sega Saturn 3D control pad.

I could have sworn dreamcast was essentially dead by the time the leftover debug codes to boot cdrs were ""found"", and then people started caring about it a bit more and buying more consoles because of it.

...

That 'someone' was Sega.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MIL-CD

And the HD-DVD format didn't have the pornography industry backing it. The keys being released were inconsequential compared to that.

It's a real bummer that Bluray won.

Seriously nigger?

To be fair HD DVD was dogshit since it held less data and the video compression wasn't as good as bluray.

Dreamcast was dead by the time pirating came out. Stop spouting this meme.

HD DVD was also an objectively inferior to Bluray since it held less data.

Pretty much this. Sega was already hemorrhaging money because of the failure of the Saturn. No amount of the Dreamcast's success could reverse it.

Just make a new thread when this one goes away. No big deal.

Should I play Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on the Dreamcast or the Gamecube ports?

Depends on how much you like Chao, I guess.

The garden on Dreamcast (especially in 1) is rather shitty.

Who the fuck cares about that?
The only interesting format HD-DVD-RAM died together with HD-DVD. So 3rd gen optical media failed entering the PC market entirely and it got stuck with 2nd gen (DVD).
Ermm the video compression of HD-DVD was exactly the same: H.264.

Toy Story graphics on the ps2 was and still is my favorite vidya meme, unfortunately, a lot of retards bought into it.

Adventure 1 is better on Dreamcast because it designed around the system's analog stick. Everyone whining about its controls are playing the GC version which has less accurate analog controls.

2 is better on cube.

This was probably a much better way to put it than what I said, yeah.

Better more space means you can hold video and audio at higher bitrates you fucktard.

That was only for a few titles. Most used VC-1 which is a less optimized codec. By the time HDDVD titles used h264 it was already dead.

You know that there are still people buying MPEG2 encoded DVD9?
Bluray failed entirely in the mass market. And Sony's format war was causing that.

But user you can play with shit in a sink!

I've got a model 2, what you want to look for on the underside if you have a model 2 is a specific number

IIRC 3020 can play burned games

Because it's cheap, not because it looks better, which it doesn't.

Yeah which is why there are still hundreads of Blurays coming out every year. Bluray wasn't as big as DVD but it's still a successful home video format for physical releases (except for 4K blurays, which honestly will be a niche for autistic videohiles and will probably die soon anyway)

It's funny because not many modern games today have water and water physics that good, let alone a console from 2000.

Does anyone have the comic of PC taking Dreamcast-tan to her first day of school?

Yes, but the Dreamcast versions were often even better than the arcade versions. See Soul Calibur and Street Fighter Alpha 3.

Pretty sure it launched and happened. It didn't have enough time to flounder and become a shadow of itself like most other consoles. Consider that a good thing. Lost potential isn't worth grieving over, no one is going to fondly look back on the Wii U in a decade from now because it stayed around and failed for an extended period of time.

Though I must say, this fucking bullshit nostalgia for the Dreamcast is annoying. I had a Dreamcast, and it really wasn't any better than any consoles before or after it. Shenmue was neat. The Sonic Adventures were fun. There's was some other shit on there that was decent, but nothing worth mourning over. Sega shit the bed with it and they failed because of it. I'm starting to believe that the people that care about the DC the most are fucking children born after it was released or idiots that have permanent rose-tinted glasses.

It is hard to do pirated games whit CD-R's for this sweet console ? i still have one working but never did craked games for console.

i dunno, dude.
I had a psx and getting a dreamcast felt like a huge step forward at the time. very fond memories. It was the console that had graphics on par with a PC with a 3dfx card.

it's literally the easiest thing in the world. you burn the discs and they run in your stock console.

1 on the Dreamcast. 2 is a toss-up between more content for the GC or non-shitty resolution on the DC. Personally, I'd just go for the PC port for 2.

Not to mention that it was on par with arcade machines at the time and had ports that were even better than their arcade counter-parts.

That's exactly the point, fam. People don't give a fuck about capacity and (U)HD fuckery.
HD-DVD format was designed for allowing making cheap HD discs on the existing DVD presses, once DVD gets phased out. Together with the option of having flippy discs with DVD on one side and HD-DVD the other.
On top of that 40 GB HD-DVD-RAM for computers.
Therefore HD-DVD could have replaced DVD entirely within years, while being slightly inferior to Sony's autistic shit on paper.
Bluray is already losing numbers against DVD again. Both formats are losing against streaming in the long run, of course, but not even surpassing DVD counts as market adoption failure.
That's exactly what Bluray always was.

Dreamcast was so cool and also cute

Are you an actual grown up man using an imageboard? What the fuck are you doing with your life, man?

If you're into game mods the Steam versions have some nifty shit available online, I should also mention that.

Adventure 1 has a few custom levels and Adventure 2 has a mod that lets you freely use multiplayer characters in stages.

Oh okay thanks user, i though we had to touch the hardware of the console or some like that for pirated games, i will try then soon.

Sega shit the bed with managing their US branch. US struck gold with the Genesis, then made a series of awful decisions with the 32X, and marketing on the Saturn. Combine that with a poorly designed Saturn, and Sega was already in the shitter. The Dreamcast was the best they could do. The only thing that might have saved them is DVD support, but that would have made the price skyrocket, keeping it from doing as well as it did.

Btw any reason why the DC logo its red in the US and blue in Europe ?

Probably because Tivola already has a red/orange swirl logo and they changed it so that there wouldn't be any confusion or lawsuits

there already was a thread yesterday if i remember correctly, it didn't fair much better

two words

backwards compatible

well that and a large ps1 game library

And that's how sony won

CD-Rs hurt the laser (or so i've heard, i've not seen any proof), so it's less than ideal. GDEMU is a hard mod that essentially replaces the disc drive altogether

What made this version better than arcade?

The Dreamcast was always a non-entity, didn't even know a kid who had a dreamcast and i get why, with that clunky ridiculously big controller.

In Europe until Holla Forums I didn't even know the Dreamcast even existed. Back in the days it was always Nintendo vs. Playstation (PS won).

Remember the N64?

SHIT TASTE FAGGOT.

Anybody here getting online with the DreamPi method?

The Dreamcast is eternal

Nigger, that happens because either the VMU battery or the Dreamcast's internal battery is fucking dead

3rd party ones are much bigger

Consoles "as we know them" are already gone, what you call consoles today are just run of the mill PCs running a proprietary, sometimes Linux based. OS.

But if you put in a shit brand of disc you'll just fuck up the laser, and those things aren't easy to replace.

Off the top of my head: Bomberman Online, EGG, the Gigawing games, Project Justice, i think Dino Crisis, Fighting Vipers 2(pal/Jap only), Jo Jo's bizarre adventure(there is an HD remake, but it's PSN/XBLA only) Chu Chu rocket(now with online, though you'll need a ton of shit to get it back running again, it can be done), Record of Lodoss war, Skies of Arcadia(GC version has all the DLC added in, but the audio took a noticeable hit) hell even now, i'd still probably recommend dreamcast Grandia II over the Steam/PS2/earlier PC port

It had more modes than all the other versions. Also it let you adjust the speed to ridiculous levels. To this day I've never seen a fighting game play as fast as Alpha 3 at max speed.

Oh yes, there's also unreleased games like Propeller Arena(One of the many dreamcast games to get shitcanned after SEGA canceled production), Geist Force(Which could blow up your dreamcast if you're not careful but still), and ToeJam/Earl 3(A very different game to the one that was actually released)

The real tragedy is that if it had succeeded, it would likely have ended up shittier than it did… Such is the world we live in.

(nice)
Yes and the internal battery is a bitch to take out and replace since it's soldered in, on the VMUs you're better off not even putting them in as they die so quickly. Just unplug the damn speaker by cutting the wires.

That's why I have two controllers plugged in, the one I use has a rumble pack and VMU while the second one holds 3rd party cards without screens.

You meant blu-ray. History didn't repeat itself (betamax vs. vhs, and vhs winning because pr0n) with the blu-ray vs. hd-dvd format war. Blu-ray won despite not allowing pr0n distribution in the beginning.

It's the other way around.

pcworld.com/article/125618/article.html

The prohibition against porn on blu-ray never happened, Sony just said they wouldn't let them use their disc stampers or help with technical issues. The media blew it out of proportion.

N64 was the original NOGAEMS.

mobygames.com/browse/games/n64/

336 GAMES, HOLY SHIT HAHAHAHA

Wrong, the laughing third contender in the format war von: DVD, against both HD-DVD and Bluray.

Which consoles run a Linux based OS?

PS4 is on a UNIX derivative. Do your own fucking research if you want to know.

Funny how a Nogaems console was more successful :^)

EA killed this system never forget

Consoles either die a Dreamcast or sell well enough to become the Wii.

posting the reccomended dc games chart, as it hasn't been posted already.

Are you a child using an image board? What the fuck are you doing with your childhood, kid?

Also this.
normalfags just wanted something cheap, convenient and that doesn't look like shit. HD shit isn't cheaper, or more convenient, and doubling the resolution isn't that big of a jump compared after DVD got us out of the world of shitty VHS/VCD artifacts.

Segata died for the sake of the Dreamcast and it failed miserably.

Why don't more people get this? It's not console vs PC, it's console vs prebuilt.

* I mean prebuilt vs PC
Fucking hell I keep messing up today

PS4 is based on FreeBSD, UNIX != Linux, GNU's Not UNIX, and you're a retard.

Did you watched his last movie?

Honestly i was thinking of Steambox, the console that was suppose to make Linux mainstream, and to a much lesser extent, PS3.

I still kinda want a Steambox out of brand loyalty. I like having a nice little collection of all one company.

Man, the movie was fucking beautiful.
