Strongly disliked how the main character was written. Reminds me of Bean in Ender's Shadow: we're consistently reminded of how smart/good/great/brilliant the character is but he just keeps doing stupid shit. The setting wasn't able to draw me in. Also felt that events were rushed due to poor writing; not talking about a lack of exposition but more about how we jump from event to event without anything in between. All meat and no potato, so to speak.

Any good book stands on its own, and holding it entirely dependent of the author is putting the author on a pedestal as someone to listen to on everything like a moral guardian. To which I have to say, if your enjoyment depends that heavily on a person's politics, you're going to be fucking disappointed.

I hope Dolphin is fine too, I only own the PS2 version and my PS2's been dead for quite a while, so playing it on a console would be a bit hard at this point.

My Japanese isn't very good yet so I haven't bothered much with trying to read shit like dialogue or item descriptions. Most weapon/armor/location names so far seem to be identical in meaning to the English version but I also found quite a few names that contained more information or certain implications in the original Japanese, they mostly are hard or clumsy to translate though so I understand the changes. In general the text seems to contain a little more 'flavor' but a lot of it is just part of how the language works with its polite and honorific phrases and a whole bunch of other expressions that don't really exist in English. Again, I haven't dug too deep into it yet, if I find enough interesting stuff I might post it in a future Souls/BB thread, if that's even relevant anymore.
