Interesting, I was just discussing rent controls with someone the other day to develop my thoughts on the matter.

Here in socialist leafland, this is actually the case in most cities. It doesn't work well, based on my observations over they years. For example, the maximum rent for a unit is calculated using a formula based on the operational and upkeep expenses of the building complex (talking about apartment units here). There is a corruption problem with this system, because the building owners simply fudge the numbers on maintenance and upkeep expenses for the annum, and in turn get permission to raise the rent for the next year above the apartment unit's set guidelines. Another problem is that in cities where these rent controls are in place, there is inevitably a constant dearth of available rental units because real estate developers don't see opportunity for much return on investment with regards to building new dwellings. This has led to a perpetual "renters market" (always less rental units available than people who are seeking to rent) which gives the rental corporations further clout with regards to pressuring the government into raising the maximum rent.

So right off the bat we have two huge problems: Corruption with regards to cheating the socialist algorithm that's in place to calculate the maximum rent, and lack of real estate development interest due to unimpressive return on interest prospects with regards to actually creating new dwellings that can be rented.

What are your proposed solutions for these very serious problems that plague or socialist system here in leafland? It seems to me that if the socialist rent controls were abolished, the free market would correct itself in no time with regards to an explosion in new real-estate development (supply and demand).

You can't solve all of these problems by just murdering people or threatening to murder people. Who decides who is corrupt? How is it investigated? We already have courts for that purpose, but the problem with regards to cheating the socialist rent control algorithm (inflating maintenance costs, either fraudulently or with frivolous overspending on meaningless bullshit) is inherent to the algorithm. If you are basing the market on some algorithm, people will always find a way to work around it. You can investigate as much as you want with your bureaucracies and death squads, but this will lead to a never ending growth of the government, because there will always be more and more algorithms and more and more ways to play the algorithms.

If they don't have children then what does it matter where the money goes? They would either have indicated they wanted it given to a party of their choice (perhaps friends and relatives, or charities they think benefit society), or the state will take it and use it for something that is (hopefully) beneficial to the citizens.

All organisms are inherently selfish when it comes to their own survival and the survival of their offspring. I agree that we can and should use our cognitive abilities to balance this inherent trait with the needs of others in our group, but to say that inherent self interest is pathological is an absolute oversimplification at best, and utter denial of nature at worst.

I agree, but I think European people's genetic tendency towards individualism has produced a great deal of the technological innovation enabling our dominance over other genetic groups on the planet. We need to find a balance between the individual and the collective group. They romanticize the destitute because they do not have material possessions, cannot ever have material possessions and so do not really concern themselves that much with material possessions.
