On the subject of Freespace: Unfortunately, even if Volition themselves got the rights, they wouldn't be able to make a true Freespace 3 with them. The current industry won't allow it. Anything they'd make would have to be made to work on consoles, meaning the mechanics would be tremendously simplified and FRED3 probably wouldn't even be a thing. Can't have players making free content when you want to sell DLC.

The best we can hope for is that Volition get the rights and, being aware of the above, do nothing with them and leave the community alone to continue their work.
