Accents can work, but ONLY if the game is voiced, and even then the situation has to call for it, either the character has an accent/bilingual element in the original Japanese script (Yeager in Tales of Vesperia uses some Engrish in the Japanese dub; western one simulates the effect with German), or in the case that the game has a real world setting, to add to the vibe of the character (Ricardo in Shadow Hearts: From the New World is a guitar strumming mariachi and speaks English with a Mexican flair). In both cases, the characters are voiced, and the on screen text is still legible.

Yeah, I can manage the accenting myself to some degree since I read a lot of Redwall growing up, and some races were pretty big on accents there. However, it still makes it harder to read than it should (I hear it's especially bad for people without English as a first language), and wastes localization time and resources. It shouldn't be done barring a few particular instances (acceptable ones being mentioned above).

Looking at some of the shit certain localizers have said (like Ireland) about how they're not aiming for people that want accurate translations as their audiance, as well as companies like NoA hiring people that have more creative writing degrees than actual translation skill, it comes off as the people involved being people that want to write their own stuff but aren't good enough to do so, so they work in localization, take an existing story/characterization, and add their own personal flair to it rather than let it speak for itself.

I don't know much about regular emulation of it, but I've heard it gets along surprisingly poorly as an eboot if you try to play it on the PSP. And Square of course (given how they've barely bothered to put old Enix handled games on the VC or PSN at all) hasn't seen fit to do a digital rerelease of it for the PS3 or Vita. At the very least, if worst comes to worst, the PS1 version might become more available temporarily if people with it opt to "upgrade" to the 3DS remake.

If only the film industry had lower standards, maybe we could have avoided them. Industry crash when?

Looking at a series I played through recently, while there's some niggles here and there, the lead translator on all three games actively cared about the games as he'd come to like them himself and wanted English speakers to be able to enjoy them just as much, and as such they were still just as fucking bizarre out here as they were in Japan, and some of the content I cannot see as having made it over otherwise. I think I also understood that the series was going to have a really niche audience at best out here, and heavily changing things to make them more "normal" was only going to lose the publisher he was hired by sales.

Apparently some folks like Tricky Viccy think they can write as good as, if not better than the original author in taking an existing script and tweaking it to fit what they want, and unfortunately some of them do develop a following despite, or perhaps outright DUE to that. An example, if you haven't heard yet: Back before Ireland founded Gaijinworks, he was localizer at Working Designs, who are these days rather known for adding their own flair to the games they translated (in some cases lines being more rewrite than translation), with pop culture references and shit (also difficulty tweaks in some games for whatever reason as well). Even as recent as a few years back on halfchan, I'd see the occasional person claim Working Designs made the games better than if the translations had been left accurate, because they added "charm" and made them "memorable," and that "JRPG scripts are usually boring anyhow." Not a lot of anons here follow that same train of thought these days.

Someone did actually check that one. It's made its way into a few original Japanese scripts.

While it is a possibility, the trend generally points elsewhere. Still, it's why I've suggested maybe having someone in one of the moonspeak threads that might have played it in Japanese and can clarify if the character is actually like that in the Japanese version as well, or a localization induced character change.

It seems like we're stuck with either official translations injected with "liberties" or rote literal fan translations that are wooden as fuck like many old official translations used to be. I'm not even wanting a strict stickler sense to the Japanese, so long as the localization sticks to the spirit and feel of the original without drastic character changes or random bullshit that'll date the text. The problem with going back to the PS1 version is that the translation goes the bland basic variety, considering how Enix's US branch was at the time.

Fuck, I would expect good translators to modify some parts of the text to make them make sense for western audience (I don't really want to read lengthy translator's notes regarding the nature of a seemingly nonsensical joke because in Japanese it's so funny because this kanji is written like this but this other means something else but is written like the other minus a single line and…). If a game or a character are supposed to be funny I wouldn't mind if they add some puns since some may have been lost in translation as long as they put them in appropriate places. I don't even mind them adding western memes if the original game has obscure Nip memes (Cyber Slut did a good job with this).

A good localization would likely do a substitution for something similar in western languages, however for games outright taking place in Japan, having a page or two in the (now non-existant) manual as translator's notes might help in that leaving it alone doesn't exactly break the vibe. Kind of depends on a game's setting though if you ask me.

Yeah, I thought that was really dumb myself, as if Square or whoever hey'd hired to localize it suddenly decided that tribesman have no place in the western release of a JRPG. This ignores that Wild Arms has had the heavily native inspired Baskar Tribe in various entries since clear back to WA1, and Shadow Hearts: From the New World has two out-and-out Native Americans as party members, one being the lead female. I'm pretty sure no Natives ever raised a ruckus about either series having them (and hilariously enough, Squaresoft handled the translation of WA3 for Sony in the past). Gallows was never changed to a cowboy in WA3, and XSEED didn't see any reason to fuck around with Shania or Natan out of fear of offending anyone (and that's even with the fact that Shania has to strip to use her Spirit Contracts), yet modern Square-Enix or whoever just winds up turning the native styled class in Bravely Second into the people that pretty much displaced the natives in real life.

8-4's generally been hit or miss in the past, with a range of translations from pretty decent to bad. I'm not sure if they actively try to fuck around and some publishers that hire them have refused to let them do so for certain games, or if it's the opposite and the publisher encourages them to fuck up stuff. Either way though, lately their quality's gone off the deep end into the shitter, and while I suppose they did a decent enough job with Nier, considering how bad off Drakengard 3 was, if it was Square caring to keep them in line before with Nier, they sure didn't bother with it in D3, and I don't expect them to not fuck around with Nier Automata.

Apparently so, aside from a few teams. I have to say that I think XSEED has the right idea in how they handle things, determining what the actual message in a line is, as well as the tone, and writing a line from scratch. It avoids the issue of sounding literal, but retains the message and how it's relayed.

Yeah but consider at what age they are being told this and in what context. Kids at that age will generally think people are well-intended and so propaganda would end up being a very difficult topic to tackle correctly. It's certainly possible to, for lack of a more appropriate word, casually partake in a hobby without getting too in-depth into the skills one would need to fully partake, but that doesn't make it any less a necessity for the aficionado, and that passion will make it possible to do just that, or at least make progress towards the ability to do so.
