I suggest downloading the client off their site and doing a fresh install, that's what I did. I had an old v62 folder but couldn't log in.

8ch guilds are nice but everyone who plays for nostalgia burns out before the guild gets anywhere. I was in the guild on DestinyMS but after awhile everyone but me and 2 other guys left. Leader lived in a spic shithole and lost power/interest, differing timezones, IRL shit then it all goes down from there. Fug me, even with 16x exp rate we never got a complete guild boss run going because everyone burned out before doing the pre-preqs or getting high enough. Zerg rushing Zak with weaklings was fun though, even if we all died

Shit I remember when it took forever to get that far. Most of my nostalgia is for the beta version, I hated the game once the cash shop stuff was implemented.

Well it is 4x xp. I basically did Maple Island until 8, got off and got my job advancement. Got a free level from Olaf's job advance recommendation as well, and grinded Slime Tree.

Someone explain maple story to me.

Out of all the MMOs you could play, you play:

-2d side scroller
-one without pvp
-combat is literally mashing spacebar
-nothing but grinding
-horrible anime 8bit look
-barely functional chat

I really wanna know what people find fun about this game. Why this over runescape or WoW or guild wars or any other multiplayer time waster?

Nostalgia mainly. The OST is amazing as well. Overall the leveling is comfy, especially with other bro's to play with. It's a niche/unique game I guess.

Speaking for pre-Big Bang

Exploration (lots of nooks and crannies to wander around in and hidden portals to find for shortcuts or secret areas), good 2D art, good music, general non-serious tone, every branch of every class has a good niche and unique abilities, you're quite heavily rewarded through party experience and a generally easier time for shacking up with randoms, cooperation is a must because no you cannot solo everything until you're at such an impossibly high level that you've already dumped thousands of hours into it.

PvP would be boring, combat's no better or worse than really any other MMO out there, expecting anything but grinding out of an MMO is retardation at best, the cutesy anime-like style works in its favor a lot of times (easily approachable and helps with the non-serious tone), no idea what you mean by barely functional chat.

Only recognise 2 in this thread including me, Peso and Zendra. We stuck around for awhile, I still go on occasionally but the servers mostly dead after the NX abuse purge. We ended up joining one of the bigger more active guilds, Herbs. The people there are pretty chill, willing to help out whenever they're on.

I'm burning out, there's nothing and no one on when I can play and almost everyone is dead. Remember that bleeding heart guy we all made fun of when he tipped his fedora at Trash for making a maido and naming it Trash. Good times

I can never play this game for more than a couple months at a time, but I always end up coming back at some point on some server. (I still vote like a crack addict though. If I ever do go back I'll be plenty funded for whatever I decide to do.)

Why does a game need to be 3D? MapleStory's niche is being 2D. (There aren't many other 2D MMOs.)
MapleStory 2 is 3D, but it doesn't feel like MapleStory at all because of it. (Still not sure if it's available yet or not. Haven't followed the news for it.)

Technically Big Bang added PvP, but no one likes Big Bang, and how PvP was implemented really wasn't that great.
The game focuses more on working with other players (bonus mob EXP for larger parties, party quests, bossing, etc) rather than working against them or alone. Unfortunately it doesn't quite succeed in that as the community (both on private servers and the official game) tends to play alone for the most part. (Hell, many players don't even like sharing large maps for some reason.)

Grinding mobs usually involves moving around the map, but I won't deny that you generally focus on only 1 or 2 skills for attacking after buffing.

MapleStory also offers party quests which usually involve collecting items or completing challenges more than grinding, jump quests (self-explanatory, usually loved or hated), and various events. It is still very focused on grinding and bossing, but isn't that what you do in most MMOs?

The style doesn't appeal to everyone, but I don't mind it. I hate the small resolution as I'm not playing on a 1024x768 monitor like I did back in the day, but it's really not that bad. Stretching the window kind of helps. (Keep in mind the game is from 2003. Increased resolution wasn't available until either late 2010 or 2011, and those versions are post-BB which aren't available on the servers we'd generally play on.)

What's wrong with it? Other than the guild chat being an almost unreadable shade of purple, it's simple and does the job.
