The old games were faster than Mario- sort of. But it was more about getting the fastest run with pinball physics. And the "high path fast, low path slow" design was pretty neat.

New console 3D Sonic is just BOOST BOOST BOOST- but we won't throw anything at you that you can't react to in time.
At least with the Adventure games you could sequence-break the levels for better times, but even then only a third of the levels are any good.

It's a roller coaster that makes you think you're overcoming a challenge, when all you're doing is holding forward and doing some quick taps akin to the first level of a Runner iPhone game.

Yeah, that's always a flaw I noticed in smooth animated sprites. Like they're not as firm as sprites that have lesser frames. Though it'll be interesting to see how this plays. Ori and the Blind Forest played well despite smooth animation. Hope this is a test run and the next 2D Sonic is hand drawn sprites.

Not sarcastic or anything, just wondering because the Adventure series weren't following a story arc and the gameplay is similar to other 3D Sonic games (besides the Boost games). I like the title screen for the sense of weight he gives off when he recoils from the spin and assumes the classic pose. I think his overall pose is a little too rigid during the ledge animation, considering that he's supposed to be off-balance and struggling to stay on the platform. The idle animation is so-so, I think his bounces should have more emphasis placed on them but I like the use of the pose. One thing I can say I love is how the individual Sonic frames are drawn in the title screen, each has a lot of character and Sonic himself looks more "solid" and three-dimensional than he ever has before in sprites, thanks to the shading and consistency among the entire sequence.

One thing that kind of bothers me is how they stuck very closely to the look of the original Sonic 1/2 sprites for running and standing, despite giving the idle and ledge animations their own tweaks in the character's design, which defies the strong sense of consistency (and uniqueness) that the title screen had.

Disregard that, I suck cocks. Sonic 2's title sequence animation is rock-solid. Technically the ones where Sonic is pre-rendered are too, but they aren't hand-drawn, so it's less impressive.

As stupid as Shadow the Hedgehog's story was, there was shit in the old comic canon that was ten times worse. I like the reboot for actually taking the settings and stories of the games and creating a consistent world out of them. The games are so disconnected with each other it never really feels like it's an actual world they take place in.

Well there's not a good or long track record when it comes to external media adaptions, there was an abandoned 16 bit title that I think was based on one of the animated shows and there's a pretty complete gba rom of another one which I can't remember the name of off of the top of my head. Still, compared to what happened with Sonic Boom, there may be room for another shot at it, if you get the right writers.
