Gawker only released his sex tape because he's a celebrity and had money. Money they thought they could get their hands on by blackmailing him into having to pay them to have the tape taken down. It didn't work like they planned because at this point his career was long over and the money just wasn't there and he sued them instead.
Hogan's legal fees were covered by someone else who also had a burning hatred for Denton.

Freedom of the press can only work when journalists have the personal integrity and code of ethics to report only truthfully and fairly. It is up to the individual to uphold these values. The government can never regulate these things.

You should never believe a headline on Gawker. They weren't hosting the video and the judge didn't order them to take it down. They were ordered to remove comments that linked to the video.

It seemed like a smart move; a website isn't legally responsible for the comments made by users. All the editor has to do is post a link to the video using a pseudonym and mention that comment in the article. This is why they were so confident that they could get away with it.

It's even mentioned in that screencap that they were ordered to remove the comments near the bottom.
