Reminds you of what this sort of thing can be with an actual director behind it instead of merely a gang of well-meaning producers. Johnson deploys a few basic narrative and visual tricks that haven't really popped up in a STAR WARS film before, along with his usual precise frames and tight technical craft, and a particular attention to emotional continuity. There's also a welcome preoccupation with collateral damage, both physical and psychic. One thing Johnson's films have never really been, though, is elegant. As in his previous stuff, certain beats here are sometimes actively clumsy, there's some serious tonal whiplash, and pacing stutters. But all of this, positive and negative, adds up to a genuinely idiosyncratic, maybe even auteurist work. Johnson may be the first guy since 1977 to make a STAR WARS movie feel like a personal one. At its very frequent best, it seems downright off-brand.

Try this out: you can watch the original Trilogy and the Prequels as standalone movies and can understand every one of them even if you didn't see the others. That doesn't work with TLJ. The problem is that Rian wanted it to be more like a standalone movie but failed terribly at it and now it is half backed shit.

The damage control they pushed about hotshot T-16 pilot Luke flying an X-wing being the same as the scavenger with no flight experience Marysue being able to instantly fly the Falcon amazes me, as Lucas beats you over the head in ANH with references to Luke's piloting ability. (webm related) Most of the talking points they use to defend the disney soy-wars movies sound like the committee that wrote them never saw the OT (or PT for that matter) and assume no one else has either.

The story itself is emblematic of the left and its perpetual victim status. The rebels defeat the evil empire then everything goes straight to shit. Families split apart, abandoning kids on obscure planets. Nothing is any better than before under the empire, but instead actually worse. The new order builds a multi planet killing machine apparently without anyone noticing, pointing to a completely "failed state" universe. The rebels need any semblance of order and normality to organize themselves against, always pretending to be fighting facism but in reality just needing to destroy anything that shines a light on their own degeneracy.

yup, Imperial remnants should have been good guys or at least better than the rotten & corrupt republic who are incapable of governance…. Evil force users should have been a few jedi that became corrupted by republic leaders ( bribes, hedonism, blackmail,etc.) Luke's ojb in movie with new padwan apprentice should have restored order and create a new government by binding the best elements of the Imperial remnants and republic.
