Have vidya companies stopped shilling to their core audiences?

Have vidya companies stopped shilling to their core audiences?

We all know shilling really only works for the mainstream lowbrow consumer whore, and anyone whos considered a 'heavy user' or 'pre 2000's monetary affiliate' is not falling for the 'get hype' consumer influencer culture right? But i'm wondering if the last year has seen the companies basically give up on shilling certain games purely because they know people from the pre 2008 year of darkness are not receptive to it.

I noticed it rewatching this years E3 presentations when i was bored. There are things like No Mans Sky clearly designed for the lowbrow 'get hype' rubes and naturally it got shilled and marketed out the ass. But then you have things like Death Stranding, Days Gone, Horizon, Quantum Break, The Last Guardian and so on that will probably appeal less to the previous audience because they arent "immediately accessible" and all seem to be the sort of title that requires more 'videogame experience' than 'give me a movie experience' and surely its no coincidence that these are the games we are seeing shilled less since if we are the more likely audience for them then surely thats a waste of time and money right?

I mean The Last guardian is like 60 ish days from release and if you owned a PS2 and love team Icos work thats right up your alley, but that alley ain't one that shilling works to so why bother?

Anyone else noticing this? its like devs have realised the gams set up to be remembered as a shitshow can only be pushed on rubes so they focus their marketing on things like No Mans Sky, Call of Duty, Battlefront, Fallout and so on.

I'm just not sure if that means they consider us less relevant or they just don't need to try anymore, or which could be worse.

Mainstream casual games that get overhyped like Last of Us and No Mans Sky end up being shit.

And isn't that why they hype them? to ensure day one sales before the rubes get wind of bad word of mouth?

this has been true since the days of Halo
where the fuck were you?

So where does this shit picture set come from ?

I don't know but it is wonderful.

They shill to whoever made them the most money. Advancements were so people would go to your game for the features. Now that some want an "experience", they don't need to make advancements. It's not "Holla Forums doesn't buy games", it's just that reddit is willing to buy something that is shit, and buy the dlc for it too.

All true, but my point is two years ago they shilled everything in the name of 'wider market appeal' now half the shit from the last E3 has not even been mentioned since and some of it is only 1 or 2 months from release and theres a distinction there which wasnt a year ago.

I think at this point publishers and developers are aware they have lost any chance of appealing to an audience they long since neglected. So instead of pulling out all the stops and making a title with long lasting appeal, they try to toss a wider net to hope they make up for newer fans gained compared to old ones lost.

Look at Last of Us 3 years ago.
Everyone was hyping it because they were told to. It got 10/10 after 10/10 in the reviews. The commercials made sure you knew that. The journalists made sure you knew that, hell, even the cover of the damn thing made sure you knew that. However, it turned out to be a sub-par cinematic experience video game with average gameplay. Nowadays, it's barely talked about.

Gone Home got similar treatment too and we all know how that one ended up, as a walking simulator.

Destiny was overhyped too and ended up uber shit.

No Mans Sky had perhaps the worst case of overhypage in recent vidya history, with the nu-male developers talking out of their asses with lies used to deceive normalfags and to get them to buy their shitty space simulator. And now everyone hates that game.

Undertale is sort of a strange case, it didn't get as much hype as the games I mentioned before, but when it was released it got 10/10 "masterpiece" ratings out the ass. It wasn't even that good, but they kept hyping it and hyping it, and it even got voted to be the best game ever made.

Now a year later, all you see is that game getting shat on, or the autistic recluse fanbase making porn of it on Deviantart. It's irrelevant now.

The larger the game's budget, the more marketing it gets. The more marketing, the more sales. The more sales, the more budget for the next title in the series. It's not a complicated system.

Games will never stop shilling to their core audiences with their hype trains and lies. They've been doing this for decades.
It will probably get even worse in the next few years if we keep letting it slide.

I want to FUCK this meme.

...

can someone please educate a pleb on the significance of 2008?

It was the year it all went wrong. SJW infestations began to take route, companies like Bioware started the whole "theres a skip cutscene button, why no skip gameplay button?" horseshit and games like Bioshock combined with games overtaking films in terms of profitability drew in the normalfag crowd in never before seen numbers that grew exponentially from there.

It was the year games turned to shit.

I want to be a normalfag casual so I can enjoy bad games

You've had it going until
Go away retard/shill/bait (pick whichever suits you most).

damn, forgot that I use custom scripts

They stopped shilling that when the normalfags didn't bite, now they are 180'ing so hard its no longer windows 10/xbone exclusive.

Personally it happened before that in 2005/6, when video games became more mainstream. Because of that people who never played a game before or who jumped on because it became "trendy" were fine with shit that was and wasnt allowed before.

Have you stopped being a faggot who only posts stupid garbage rants that we've all seen before? This isn't your blog.

So from where do you hail, user, reddit or SA?

Has anyone noticed she's literally holding her shirt like Bane?

This meme is exquisite.

I wish the marketing departments realized that the whole wide target audience thing is fucking retarded and doesn't work. Look at GTA 5, it's not any more casual than GTA 4 or even San Andreas and it sold fuck ton. And look at WoW for another example. Ever since Blizzard merged with Activision they went full jew and streamlined the FUCK out of the game. Now the game is fucking dead and this next expansion they are going all out with the pandering, going as far as giving ashbringer to every fucking player. Maybe after this expansion fails they finally get a fucking grip and release legacy servers or something.

Why isn't wide target audience thing working? I think it works very well, you sell some game, you get fans that will buy the next game so you start pandering to wider audience because those aren't planning to buy the next game yet, profit! Quality and variety means nothing as long as its an established brand/genre, has core features and polished. You aim for more sheeple (wide audience) to buy your streamlined crap (a game every year) with a lot of extra options to earn more money (DLC). I think it's just as simple and stupid as it sounds…

Stop that stupid meme, sage is "to not bump". Obviously if someone doesn't like the thread even though the thread is good and he's a fagget that someone doesn't want to bump it.

WoW got bigger and bigger audiences every single time they dumbed down the game, though. Doesn't help that MMOs were traditionally designed around mega-autists in the first place, but gradually realised there's a shitload more people who just want to hit wolves while pretending to be an elf for a couple hours each night.

...

I never played wow. Why did it start failing then?

I think it's because casual players, are in fact casual. Which meant they buy the expansion, and then after a month or so get bored and unsubscribe. You can clearly see this is a trend if you look at the sub numbers. They jump up when an expansion releases and after that quickly drops. Meanwhile in vanilla and tbc there was a steady growth of subscribers. That was back when the game wasn't a total streamlined mess.

I hope you know I'm just here for the mokous

Heh.

Oh shit.

so many people fail to realize the xbox is where this all started going to hell

Most game companies have been owned and run by people who don't actually give a shit about video games since the late 90s/early 2000s. They don't have any desire to make the core audience happy because they share the same hobby. In their eyes, there are only different demographics. They have no desire to sell to the "core" demographic, because they're business men and know that the existing core's potential sales profits are comparatively small to what they can make if they whip unwitting lemmings into a frenzy.

Nah, it was the Playstation 1, sure it was the best console ever made but things it put in place where what started the death, even if other things it brought gave us the best games ever made

I wish I could still call you underage

Thats not how "sage isnt a downvote" meme works dipshit. Youve got it backward. Its a reply to asshats like you that get their panties in a bunch when they see someone didnt bump the thread

Nope!

...

Fuck outta here, you ruined anime

Weebs founded these communities. You're on a japanese style BBS. We'll always be here

A shame Sony and their lies with the PS2 really killed any chances the Dreamcast had left.

Post counting should be illegal!

Be nice!

No, this was your fault you piece of moeshit
Moe is trash and so are you

Go shitpost somewhere else retard

Moe is not trash, you're just sick and salty.

I thought this is the containment board

Companies nowadays aren't interested in marketing to core markets, we are the more savvy and infinitely more dangerous group to try and appeal to. We all keep up to date with any games that interest us on our own anyway, so even if the company is completely oblivious, if not outright despising our existence, they know better than to try and market to us anyway since it's mostly just a waste of time and resources.

The casuals who eat up every glossy, scripted, cinematic trailer thrown their way are the ones companies have decided to chase since they're where the real money is at. As a matter of fact, I often seem to find that there's a sort of 'counter marketing' movement going on to directly discredit and shame most of the core market that's still around.

A casual who gets swayed by one of us is a lost sale, and with the advent of the internet core market opinions are much easier to be heard. So lately I've noticed a trend to sort of make fun of and belittle the core market in order to make them 'those crazy nerds who hate videogames!'.

'Don't listen to THOSE guys intelligent goy! They're just entitled/waxing nostalgic/unpleasable! Now check out our new cinematic action game that all the real gamers, such as yourself, are currently buying and playing! Remember to pre-order!'

Generally speaking, any game that tries to market itself heavily to that audience is bullshit.

Yes, now they shill for dykes and faggots who fon't even play bideo games

After Ghostbusters flopped in both game and movie form this year, I have a feeling that'll happen a lot less from here on out.

See the duke nukem shitstorm brewing?

Not quite, they've already got plans for a new Rocketeer with a black female lead and several other films like that sitting in development.

These are SJWs we're talking about, mixed with clueless businessmen who don't know anything, both of whom are really bad at admitting faults of their own.

They'll double down way before they give up. So expect at least five-ten more Ghostbusters before the trend really dies down due to a lack of time and money to continue chasing a nonexistent market of feminists and fags.

or maybe claims of shilling were incredibly overblown and now that people know that they can't make positive threads about non Holla Forums approved games without getting called a shill for 30 posts they stopped trying and this makes it seem like there are less shills when there was very few if any in the first place

So… if we're lucky we'll get a Hollywood crash in addition to a Gamecrash. I hope Disney crashes too.

What's funny is that I've mentioned some games I've liked in threads in the past and gotten accused of being a shill despite the fact that the games were well over a decade old and the original devs wouldn't be seeing any money on them anyhow.

Even then looking at the twitter account it seems like Gearbox is trying desperately to win back people after Pre Sequel had its devs shut down and Battleborn was a massive flop in every way imaginable. But if it actually manages to release on time and is a good game without stupid internet memes, or pandering of any kind, maybe I'll give it a play? I'm still on the fence on purchasing Gearbox shit after Aliens Colonial Marines being a slap in the face, especially at full price.

At this point I wonder if it'll take 5-10 more Ghostbusters-tier movies now, the commercial failure of it probably will ensure more movies like that will only become straight to netflix films at best.

You should never purchase anything from Gearbox if for no other reason than because Pitcford is a massive tool.

People on Holla Forums are incredibly overtly paranoid about shilling. To the point where it's gotten kind of ridiculous, you can't talk about any game, Holla Forums approved or not, positively or not, without it devolving into a thread of accusations.

Gearbox made their bed, not only are they incompetent, literally every single one of their productions has been produced with thievery.

Friendly reminder that the original Borderlands stole it's art style and direction from an indie film, complete with someone from Gearbox having contacted the director beforehand in regards to using it, only for him to get radio silence in return after they decided to take it anyway.

Also promotional art.

Aliens Colonial Marines was outsourced and the money given to them to develop it by Sega was thrown at Borderland's 2 instead, they also false advertised the shit out of it.

Gearbox is shit, I guarantee the new Duke will be shit to unless it's made without their involvement in any meaningful way.

Fuck off and stop shitting up series like Berserk with your faggotry.

No

Post more mokous.

...

Rubes will like the game so no.

...

IMO it's a bad long term business model. It tries to get a large amount of pre-orders on ultimately broken promises, but do they ever measure the cost of their ruined reputation?

we were never the core audience you retard.

You can safely talk about decade old games though.

*8 bit noises* BOOPER DOOPER

one thing i have noticed is that excluding leftist shills shilling has been decreasing on Holla Forums. maybe they're rethinking their strategy since we also started calling them out more

fuck off reddit
