ITT: Post games that were so close to being great (or even perfect) but have one or two problems that makes them shitty instead.
Hard Mode: Has to be within the game. No outside factors (no shitty fanbase, porn or kike dev) DANTE MUST DIE Mode: Isn't the story. Problem lies in gameplay.
I'll start with this. Had they made the gameplay more DMC-ish and got rid of escort and QTE bullshit, this would be pretty fun.
This game is fun mechanically but the controls are so fucked. Has there ever been an isometric action game that controlled well?
Michael Torres
It got me into the TXR series and having played those Who could all be fixed by having better driving physics and one bugfix this one is the most lacking.
1. The car list is too small. Sure it hits all the staples with some sedans thrown in but TXR always delivered on being damn near encyclopedic on obscure cars or having something exotic for Japan stuff like Vettes, Vipers, Bemmers. And being able to customize them.
2. The AI is dreadfully slow especially coming from a series that will kick your teeth in And the final story boss is broken due to a bug regarding his weight
And finally it's missing the Wangan bit of Tokyo where I think due to the AI's vehicle gearing which is a bit too tall could actually pose a threat.
Robert Nguyen
Any music game with an overall disappointing song list.
Owen King
The base is there. It just needed some polish. I wish I could have seen this game if the devs had 2-3 more months to work on it.
Nathaniel Torres
The first ZoE
John Gray
i regret not being able to play this game when it still had a playerbase immensely
Joshua Sanders
Dota 2
But its an assfaggot. If it was another type of game that was as well made, it would be nearly perfect.
Jaxson Lewis
Man I haven't thought about that game since release, guess that says a lot about the game. Had a really good OST though
Jeremiah Ward
The first playthrough of LISA the Painful is horribly frustrating and bad times all around if you don't savescum.
Brandon Long
Please explain. I think you might be able to highlight the reason that I didn't enjoy the game at all.
Ryan Anderson
If this game would have gotten rid of the roll-cancelling and balanced out the roster a bit better, it would be objectively the best fighting game ever made.
Capcom VS. SNK 2 EO actually does a lot fix those problems, but tournamentfags refuse to play it because of "muh arcade" autism.
Austin Thomas
I thoroughly enjoyed the combat and controls (when in 3rd person), even if it wasn't the side-scroller we all want, it was close. The bosses were fun, especially the ones which were throwbacks to the 2d games.
If only the story and characters weren't shit, and first person was removed, it would have potentially been a decent installment to the series. Though maybe my view is jaded by desperation for a new real Metroid game.
Joseph Stewart
Shit like the roulette house, where you can just straight up get a game over through no fault of your own (unless you count not getting every possible party member before that point to be the player's fault). For fucks' sake, there's a luck stat and it's not factored in!
The abundance of bosses with instant-kill, permadeath, high hit rate attacks. It's not that it's an instant kill or a permadeath or an instant kill with high hit chance, but all three factors rolled into one that makes it over the top.
And making campfire sleeping a big risk wouldn't be a problem if the game didn't force you to hurt yourself falling down ledges at a bunch of points.
Michael Rivera
CvS2 EO is on xbox and Gcube, which were nowhere near as popular as the PS2 ver. They also haven't been ported to anything else and so everyone plays the port on the PS3, those portable arcade boards, or on PC. Roll cancels are cancer and I despise the Jap scene for sticking to the original CvS2.
Ian Gonzalez
Non-adjustable camera control. Although there are probably other big problems but that one just sticks out the most.
Jordan Ramirez
Warframe. Instead of shitting out weapons and frames that reuse the same mechanics with different digital values they should start releasing actual gameplay content like new levels, enemies, bosses and mission types. Game barely changed in the last couple of years.
Elijah Hill
A damn fucking shame
Isaac Campbell
On paper, Bloodborne would easily be my favorite in the "souls" series but there are a couple seemingly minor issues that make it one of my least favorite. It's really linear and has no build variety, so after the first playthrough the game is pretty repetitive. I must have made at least 50 builds in DaS1 but only 2 in Bloodborne. Then there's the blood vial farming which is fucking retarded given that they had already had one of the best healing systems in games (estus) and they dropped it in favor of making you either farm when you're out of vials or be overpowered when you have a lot. It also has a big focus on parrying which makes a lot of fights completely trivial if you get used to it. Learning to parry was the biggest mistake I made in DaS1 because it made the combat so much more boring, but in Bloodborne you can't even give yourself the excuse to not use it when using most weapons. Lastly there's the fact that it's 30FPS (at best) despite being the fastest in the series. I'll tolerate DeS at that framerate because its pretty slow paced but Bloodborne has absolutely no excuse. Either tone down the visuals to keep it at 60 or release it on a real fucking platform.
Totally agreed, I genuinely believe that Icefrog is one of the most talented designers in the industry, at least in terms of his ability to balance the game. But Dota is really held back by its WC3 roots. There is no reason for it to have the control scheme of an RTS, lockon abilities, and randomness to add variety. I would love to see Icefrog work on something resembling an arena shooter with assfaggot-lite elements.
Wyatt Ward
Don't forget the massive farm for blood gems and the spongy bosses on new game + and beyond. I played through the game twice with the same character and it just got dull.
Nolan Ward
I didn't even want to touch NG+ (or the chalice dungeons for that matter). Even with the complaints I made it still sounds like the best in the series on paper but it's just so fucking boring I don't get it. Maybe I have a subconscious aversion to playing games on the PS4 because I hate Sony so much no I didn't buy it, using my roomate's.
Matthew Perry
1: So many essential abilities can only be done fairly late (recruitment is only at the start of chapter 3, fusion is at the end of the chapter 4 and rifts are only after Chapter 4) 2: Recruitment is grindy as fuck, both from requiring a super attack KO (requiring you build up meter) and rifts (which contain 75% of the actual Dragon Ball characters) requiring you fight random battles first to open them.
For actual Dragon Ball characters you need
Adam Long
Another one.
Nathaniel Scott
The point of no returns.
Once you fix those, it's a bit above Broken Seal. A lot of people forget just how much of an improvement Lost Age was over the first game, but going and playing all 3 in order it's not as bad as people remember (aside from points of no return).
Fusion is end of chapter 3, but whatever. (also ignore that last bit I forgot to remove)
Andrew Morris
This could have been amazing with a competent level designer.
Justin Sanchez
I was in the alpha/beta of this. Game was coming along well and had great feels to it too, music and zones had that magic to them like Ashenvale and is likely why it's one of the few MMOs the community took the time to write a full emulator for. But then things started to go wrong during beta as if a different lead designer stepped in (which is probably what happened). Stupid changes that broke the fun started going in. And then they suddenly announced the launch WAY before the game was ready. For perspective on what I mean by 'not ready', you could level up to 150 in the game but there wasn't any content beyond level 120 yet. Whole zones were just empty. Bosses weren't in yet nor was the plot active. Almost as soon as it launched, EA announced the closure of Westwood, its developer. So it was clear why development had been cut so short. I'm confident it would have done very well had Westwood not been murdered.
Tyler White
a big "just fucked it up enough' title for me is max payne 3, every single bullet in that game satisfies, but its got a bunch of weak levels and obnoxious cutscenes. by end game every enemy just wears full armor so you just go for headshots which is fine and all, but since they added a good injury system to the game along with bullet time they really could have mixed up the weak spots some more. and every set piece moment really could have just been a part of regular gameplay, for example theres a sequence where you roll on a cart down a windowed hallway to shoot the guys on the other side. cool, but its just a scripted piece, in stranglehold you can do that with any cart in the environment and that game is several years older
the premise and style of neverdead was pretty interesting, the gimmicks had potential but when i played it it was just boring and buggy, i dunno if 'so close" describes it since the only thing that ended up being good was the premise
this one hurts. i hope plat brings these characters back even if its just for a better polished single player game
woah holy shit this is cool, i wish when i played it it was in a situation i coulda enjoyed the tunes more (me and a buddy were bantering over it the whole time) and dropped it pretty quickly
Aiden Sanchez
Where they dropped the ball: It's really not even a bad game, but it could have been so much more.
Lincoln Cox
That game wasn't even based of the second Metro book, they just went full "OC doughnut steel" with it.
Joshua Scott

Connor Kelly
Its called Lisa the PAINFUL for a reason ya dingus.
Gavin Barnes
can't you disable that? I remember disabling that as soon as I started playing.
Kevin Kelly
The chatter topic, and the quest arrows started with Oblivion.
Ethan Torres
Morrowind's journal system was fucking horrible.
Benjamin Murphy
It just couldn't decide what to be. The multiplayer was okay but both previous and later efforts in the series were much better. The singleplayer had a great story and was really interesting but was brought down by being stuck in a multiplayer focused game. I've already played a pure multiplayer Tribes game and a purely singleplayer one would have been cool. It's such a shame a multi generational epic set in the Tribes universe was wasted like this.
Isaiah Campbell

Anything's better than quest markers. I'd much rather have hard to navigate pages of elaborate instructions of how to get to a place than a shitty glowing thing that you look in the direction of while pressing W for 10 minutes. The former requires you to actually pay attention to the environment and written directions while the latter might as well be a really long loading screen.
Alexander Reyes
Cheating AI, only made worse by the final F1 race wherein 2 seconds behind suddenly becomes 35 seconds behind.
Brody Ortiz
Just turning them off doesn't fix the issue since you don't have another way to navigate, the devs assume you're never lost, so they don't bother to make an organic way to discover where to go.
Wyatt Lopez
I agree that it was a bit buggy, but like I said, I felt its problem was the gameplay wasn't over-the-top enough for the concept (which is why I suggested DMC-style gameplay over what it currently has), and I felt that what dragged it down is how it used escorts and QTEs to give the game difficulty rather than something a bit better.
Joseph Butler
Enter the Gungeon could have been great if the bosses didn't have such inflated HP bars.
Levi Mitchell
i dont mind, but the gun drop rate is stupid, theres too many weapons that arent really any better than your starting gun
Charles Thompson
It just needed Rogue Galaxy's combat system, more focused on single player so the whole story wouldn't have been rushed, and for your avatar to actually be the protagonist.
Jordan Powell
Starforce 3 has an annoying subcard system that randomly causes your cards to lose their normal functions and have them replaced with a much less useful function instead. This can happen to your Selected card (the card you select to always be in your hand at the start of a battle), and up to 5 out of 6 of the cards in your hand can become subcards.
Jeremiah Baker
This.
There will never be a fighting game that comes even close to being as good as XX, but netcode kills its multiplayer. And of course the playerbase is small because its not made by Crapcum
Zachary Martinez
It's a shame, because this game was close to being even better than Aria
Christopher Jenkins

For like 2 months I've played this every day with my friend in the canadian maritimes while personally in the US midwest. I don't think it's as bad as everyone says it is, but it's really spotty; sometimes it's perfect, sometimes it's constantly interrupted. Had to turn vsync off on my laptop to get it playable. Really hope they fix it someday, my favorite game right now. I main faust and he mains Robo. Makes for a fun matchup.
Cooper Perez
1080 avalanche fixed it
onechanbara z2 chaos still hasn't fixed it's localized name
Robert Cooper
Was the second Metro book any good? I didn't play Last Light and read the first book recently.
Nolan Sullivan
Is "MMO" really just a codeword for Early Access now?
Luis Robinson
Do you mean Julius mode? Minus the art bit
Joshua Gomez
It was a giant steaming turd dropped on everything MadWorld stood for. I don't see how it's good, let alone almost great.
May be the sleep deprivation, but I don't recognize this one.
pretty sure they're keeping the name. That's not your big complaint is it?
James Allen
...
Robert Nelson
QTE's, gimmicky shmup section and a couple of annoying enemies stop it from being flawless.
Evan James
The fights have to be set in the same arena with a big tacky circle of fire around it.
So not only do the fights get repetitive and distracting, but the overworld maps feel empty because all the enemies are represented by giant floating scrolls, and on top of all that most of the people in the game don't even notice the shit going on in the spirit world so fighting these enemies just feels like a big waste of time.
Justin Howard
Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the game is free now. tribesuniverse.com/ Along with the rest of the Tribes games. Obviously the MP is sort of deader than dead but the SP campaign is worth it.
Mason Gray
Game about being an immortal.
Not even being more DMC would have saved this game.
Jackson Robinson
Its why I said to remove the QTE and escort shit. And I'd imagine being more DMC would come with making you slightly sturdier as well. Will agree that they should have reduced the amount of mandatory head removal puzzles though.
Thomas Murphy
For me it was Fable II. Good game, but god damn, combat was atrociously easy. Magic over level 1 being pretty useless didn't help that much, too. Fix that and you have a solid 9/10 game.
James Kelly
That one's much better than the Megadeth song
Ayden Anderson

Hunter Price
I feel the same way. All I did in combat was abuse the invincibility frames during flourish attacks.
Isaiah King
Problem is they don't even attack you during flourish attacks, and even if they attack you, they deal no damage. To make things worse, ambushes decided to constantly fight you 1v1.
If you, for some reason, were several minutes away from the controller during a fight, and they managed to kill you, you would simply take 1 of the 70 resurrection potions you had and instantly go back to full health with absolutely no penalties. If you went on vacation and left your console turned on for several dies and you managed to take all your potions, all you would find when you came back would be motherfucking scars.
It's impossible to lose in that game. Combat is so fucking dumb.
Ryan Cooper
Dragonball xenoverse. Graphisms were alright, character roster was pretty large, creating your own DBZ mary sue was a fanboy's dream, the game was kinda badly optimised but nothing too major, but mother of god the fucking combat system.
HP bars are shorter than my fucking dick, super armor every-fucking-where, four specials and four supers max (including the FUCKING SUPER SAIYAN MODE) , combos were very limited, spamming the ki blast button nailed anyone in place, and transforming into a super saiyan made you a super attack spamming gatling gun, instant win.
They had the possibility of putting a Budokai style battle system, but THIS SHIT ?
