Valve even managed to make most of those games worse. Left 4 Dead 2 is a casualized version of Left 4 Dead 1. CS:S is a easier version of cs 1.6 and cs:go is even more dumped down.

Even Dota 2 is totally dumped down even thought they balance it according to the pro scene instead of listening to casual noobs.

L4D2 also added fucking terrible gauntlet events into L4D1 maps that were not designed with them in mid. Blood Harvest really got fucked by them.

It's not the same, in l4d2 you got melee weapons and those are kinda op.

You ever joined a promod server? Those are always 2vs2 tier 1 no melee.

Turtle Rock Studios, an indie dev, made L4D1. Valve bought them in early 2008 though they'd been working together for a while before then. Valve's skills lie in finding creative people and funding their creativity then rehashing what those people made. There's nothing hugely wrong with that approach and hell modders certainly make better games than developers but Valve themselves aren't particularly original.

The other devs are usually better. Just check out cs:go for example.

First hpe was working on it. They worked together with the community and some pro gamers on it.

Later Valve fired them and started to work on the game themselves. They ditched that website hpe was using and started to listen to Reddit instead. Also they hardly changed gameplay anymore and instead started working on skins and ui changes and shit like that.

Also made scoring in versus purely about distance which encourages blind rushing rather than managing health. L4D2 versus is massively survivor sided if they have sufficient practice because they just memorise the likely infected spawns and use melee weapons/rushing. The fact that one infected will occasionally spawn as the comparatively useless jockey does not help.

Anyway, there are people out there who have 2-5k hours in Left 4 Dead 2, versus is where all the fun lies and that mode is as I said above a lot easier for humans.

I lately stick mostly to scavenge or ftl on rooftop no mercy because you get a lot of instant kill opportunities on those maps.

Another complaint I have is how the interface changed. L4D1 was cleaner and rather clearly designed for PC. You had a larger FoV, smaller weapons and could see your legs. L4D2 has the gun take up 3/4 of your screen and just generally feels a lot more consolised particularly at a large resolution. This sounds like bitching but load up L4D and compare it.

The new maps are inferior too both from a gameplay and setting perspective. Nighttime is much cooler and frankly the original game's levels felt much more like the classic zombie movies Turtle Rock looked to for inspiration (this goes for the characters too). You'll also note all of that other user's infected tricks are on L4D1 maps. They generally play a little better in versus in my experience though the balance can be a little crazy in some chapters.

Half-Life 1 and Portal 1 were the only good games Valve ever made.

There's no questioning that. One of the few things I will applaud Valve for is knowing who to pick up. They obviously know who to grab, and its lead to some interesting things, if nothing else. Though I do wonder why lately they've avoided pretty much any talk of game development and just started working on hardware instead.

In CS:S vs 1.6 it mostly has to do with the hitboxes. The hitboxes are fuck huge in Source to the point where you can't not get headshot kill, in comparison getting a headshot in 1.6 it felt like a small accomplishment.


I think my favorite thing about Half-Life 2 were the full conversion mods that came out it like Zombie Master, Eternal Silence, Dystopia, Empires, Nightmare House, and Underhell. It seems like full conversion mods are a dying breed and It's a shame when most people think modding they think shit like reskins, ENBs, and slight gameplay tweaks and not much else. Though you could probably blame this to the rise of free to use game engines like Unity.

If so then making the old illusions disappear is harder to implement than just leaving them there so incompetence is probably not the reason why they removed that (also that change is pretty old, wouldn't surprise me if this happened before Dota 2 even existed).

It's true that the Dota 2 scoreboard at the end of the game used to show less information than the one in DotA 1, but that didn't really impact the game and they just updated it.

It just felt like it was rushed and they added anything they could think of to appeal to normalfags. In L4D1 when you died it was nearly always your fault even if you could lay some blame on a teammate. L4D2 is a crap shoot, you run like a mad man towards the end of the map and hope nothing random happens a long the way to ruin it. People don't work as a team unless it's pre-made vs. pre-made.

There is no excuse for the second game, it was an obvious money grab. L4D1 was played up to have all this new content (maps) coming out and had not been around for very long at the time when the second game was announced. People were still playing it regularly, the community was strong and still figuring out new tech. Then L4D2 comes out and splits the community, eventually all the good players come back to the first game but it slowly dies because it's no longer supported. There aren't even official servers online for it anymore.

Try playing on higher difficulties, you won't use anything but combat rifle, snipers, magnum and assault rifles unless you feel like dying early. Melee is useless, your point is to keep the zombies AWAY, not fight them up close.

20 damage per hit doesnt make melee useless it just means you have to be more careful. Anyone with a decent headset knows when a zombie is coming and has more then enough time to be prepared for it. If i get swarmed on expert or any difficulty the best option is to start swinging and spinning. I would have gone down either way but the difference is ill have 2 or 3 zombies kicking me on the ground opposed to 30.

I don't know if you know, but in L4D2 the first weapons you get at the start of a game are SMGs and shotguns, not high tier rifles and combat pistols.


The best way to kill zombies is to just knock them back and shoot a shotgun. Shotgun and knock is the best for quickly getting rid of them.

Looking over the 20 years graphic puts things into perspective for me. If I could change our timeline, I would gladly forgo everything in those 20 years if it meant steam was never created. AS was is such a great game, and it pains me to see nobody appreciates it.
It's fucktons of fun, while I know only 4 other people (2 who were always a part of my team, 2 who were a part of my team for a while) who played it. Everybody is always all about dem dotes and dem kuntrstroiks, but they neglect AS.
